I suspect everyone is at it to a lesser or greater degree, this careful and selective targeting of groups in order to sway results, it's always been around and I'm afraid it's likely here to stay.

Once it was attempted purely by electoral broadcasts, newspapers and canvassing but it's just the more modern mediums for discourse and dissemination such as social media data combined with easy to employ and sophisticated software tools, that seem to make it so much more effective at swaying results, and more frightening.

It all sadly devalues words like democracy and democratic mandate used in some quarters in order to justify policy making (or even lack of), and makes them ring a bit hollow to me.

But short of banning social media during election periods or censorship, routes we should never go down, I'm not sure if there is an answer to any of it, but I do sense the final outcome of such sophisticated and effective manipulation will probably be further disillusionment by large swathes of the public with the political system and the further disengagement and social anarchy that will lead to.

We could well be teetering, blindfolded and unaware, and on the edge of the dark abyss of societal self destruction, not so much a zombie apocalypse but more a too easily influenced moron apocalypse.

It's all pretty bleak as far as I can see.

Cambridge Analytica is shutting down. The firm with ties to Trump's campaign says the Facebook data scandal drove away business. https://cnn.it/2HPPS7P

I wonder how many weeks it will be until it returns as Oxford Logica

From the BBC article about the closure

Quote
Earlier in the day, a cyber-security specialist had presented evidence to the UK parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

Chris Vickery linked SCL and Cambridge Analytica to AggregateIQ - a Canadian data analytics firm, which Facebook has also suspended from using its platform.

He added that "beyond a shadow of a doubt" AggregateIQ had been involved in "some form of collaboration or co-ordination" between various pro-Brexit groups during the UK's EU referendum campaign.

AIQ denies ever being part of Cambridge Analytica, its parent company SCL or accessing improperly obtained Facebook data.

And representatives from Vote Leave and Leave.EU have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

But the Electoral Commission and Information Commissioner's Office are conducting their own investigations into the Canadian firm's operations.

Can't help but think they will come back under the guise of a different company name. If you look at how instrumental they were in the US election, companies like that don't just go away.

Ben Collins, NBC

New from me: Just a big coincidence, but Cambridge Analytica's primary funder Rebekah Mercer joined a shadowy new firm called Emerdata last month.

When she filed British government paperwork, she used Cambridge Analytica's New York address.

Whoops.

The UK's official registrar of businesses and organizations, Companies House, lists an active company called Emerdata Limited, headquartered at the same offices as SCL Elections and run by much of the same management and investors as Cambridge Analytica. It even describes itself as a "data processing, hosting and related activities" organization.

For instance, Dr Alexander Taylor was appointed a director of Emerdata on March 28. That's Cambridge Analytica's acting CEO and data wizard Dr Alexander Taylor. Julian Wheatland is an Emerdata director who is also a director within the SCL network of organizations.

Jennifer and Rebekah Mercer are directors of Emerdata, and are the daughters of ultra-wealthy businessman Robert Mercer who created and bankrolled Cambridge Analytica. Billionaire Bob has given tens of millions of dollars to rightwing political efforts. Jennifer and Rebekah also had a hand in Cambridge Anal.

The Mercer's are among Trumps biggest backers and through CA, they've helped quite a few right wing parties in elections around the world,
