Why was it impossible here when it was clear as day that the conditions were unfair and more importantly unsafe?
Not as clear as day to me or most of the competitors, and hardly any less safe than a whole range of conditions you'll meet in any snow sport. I don't know if you ski or not, but if you do you'll agree that doing a rolling run in flat light is far more difficult and dangerous than doing the same run in sunlight. Yet on any day when the sun is in and out there's a chance that half the competitors have to cope with flat light, those further down the order have to cope with ruts and gouges, and for all of them the snow conditions will vary with the temperature. By your argument, that's not fair, and logically it's not. But if you compete in this kind of sport, it's all part of the game.
This view that every variable should be taken out of competions to ensure a level playing field is debated in every sport. In some countries and some sports the result is closed stadiums with artificial playing surfaces. If that's your preference, so be it. I believe conditions, including weather, should be part of the challenge, otherwise we might as well play video games.
