This is the worst state I can remember Everton being in aside from their brief flirtation with relegation in the 90s. The difference with the 90s is that now there is a growing gap between the top few and the rest. The more they balls up the more they will fall back and back and back.

And back in the 90's there was quite a difference in financial clout between "the rest". Nowadays even promoted sides have access to significant funds to compete with the likes of Everton.

Turn 5 of Everton's wins into losses and they would be in the relegation places. That is within the realms of a bad season swing. All of the clubs from them down could easily get sucked into a relegation battle. How much does it take to make the Goodison crowd turn on the players?

If they get sucked into a relegation battle, they may not get out.

Moyes may be the man for them. He made not worrying about relegation look far easier than any of the subsequent managers.

Not sure how Arteta being turned down by Arsenal propels an inexperienced assistant into a proven EPL manager who can take a struggling side with an ageing squad into the Champions League.

His only qualification seems to be he played for Everton.

He is the type they will end up with though as anyone with true pedigree and experience will have half a dozen better jobs to choose from.

Basically Kenwright is looking back through previous squad lists looking for the "legend" who can lead them into the promised land.

My choice would be Phil Neville. Delusion in a suit.

So how does this appointment work then? If he improves them in any way then he’s shown that he’ll be off like a shot the moment anything remotely bigger comes along. And there’s quite a lot that he’ll consider to be bigger than Everton.

If he doesn’t improve them then he’ll be out on his ear Oct/Nov 2019 at the latest.

He’s managed about 150 games, in total, at his last four clubs. “Long term appointment” indeed.
