The Republic of Ireland Football Thread (Not A Home Nation)
« on: August 29, 2012, 02:30:10 pm »
This is a thread for all the general matters of Irish football, such as the domestic league, Irish player watch abroad, FAI Politics and of course the collective unit of our international side and its underage setup. This thread is for strictly football.

Upcoming Fixtures

07/09/2012     Kazakhstan - Away - World Cup Qualifier
11/09/2012     Oman - London - Friendly
12/10/2012     Germany - Home - World Cup Qualifier
16/10/2012     Faroe Islands - Away - World Cup Qualifier

I'll get the ball rolling shall I? Good, Simon Cox banged in a cracker for Forest last night against Wigan, McClean was also on the scoresheet scoring two passed Morecombe

and i'll help you keep it rolling. delaney is delusional. i'm sure you know he earns more than the italian and spanish CEOs COMBINED! wowser.

lets hope we get a result against kazahkstan, we need to get the feelgood factor back. were we crazy to believe we could have got out of our euro group? and finally i hope trapp plays players on merit, not loyalty. take chances on youngsters like.

He took a pay cut two weeks ago that equates to around the national average wage, lucky for him he still makes more than the Taoiseach.

Chances of qualifying second ahead of Swedan for the group are slim, for one thing they'll hammer us away and probably sneak a win at the Aviva, which of course will leave us fighting it out with Austria for third, not to confident about that either. The World Cup campaign should have one eye on qualifying for France  2016. That means bringing in new talent and from noises from Trap and Tardelli it will be more of the same, that means playing two up front and sticking to our uncreative, old fashioned and ultimately flawed  defensive system. The FAI cant afford to sack him so a long drawn out affair and generally bad buzz end of an era vibe awaits.

A cracker, salivating at the thought of it.

Kilbane last night set one up and scored  one in Coventry's 3-2 defeat of Birmingham

Walters scored a decent goal and added and assist as well Monday night against the might of Swinden

Wes Houlahan was on the score sheet as well creating and converting a penalty against  the titans of Scunthorpe

Coleman set up one of the goals in Everton's drubbing of Layton Orient

On a bigger stage McGeady's Spartak were drawn in the same group as Celtic

My feeling as well. To be fair to Trap, he led us to our first major tournament in 10 years (some would say that this was as it should be given his wage) but I maintain that we could, and should, have topped our qualifying groups for both tournaments under his reign. That we didn't had a lot to do with useful players not being picked (World Cup) and negative tactics (World Cup, Euros). Italy and Bulgaria were poor teams - we drew with them 4 times, a potential eight points dropped. Henry's handball need never have happened. Slovakia were so good that Armenia beat them 4-0 in their own stadium - we drew with them twice. We went into those games with a preconceived notion of what constituted a good result. I think it cost us a place in South Africa and ensured that we needed the good fortune of drawing Estonia to make it to Poland and the Ukraine. People will say that we should be thankful for even making it to the Euros, and of course I was, it was a fantastic few weeks even considering the results. It's not about being ungrateful or getting ideas about our station, it's about getting the best out of the players at your disposal and, honestly, I don't think he's done that as well as he could have. But that's just my sense of it.

So what's the story with retirements? Given and Duff are gone, Keane and Dunne are still there, is that it? If so, nothing's really changed too much. Given was awful in the Euros and Duff's been average for a while. With the likes of McLean and Coleman coming through, we still have players who can do a good job for us but the problem isn't just the outdated, negative tatics of the manager but also the fact that this group is the hardest one we've had in Trap's time. I'd be shocked if we managed to get a point off Germany, and Sweden are usually consistent enough in qualifying campaigns. We should have been building for the future and developing new talent before now, in my view with a more progressive manager. I highly doubt we'll be celebrating qualification in November 2013 and it'll be interesting at that point to see how we're fixed for the 2016 qualifiers.

Good and bad news today, bad news first Darren Gibson has pulled out of the Irish squad , sighting disillusionment after the performance at the Euros. Safe to say the real reason is because he doesnt fit into Traps plans and has said balls to the national side, disappointing that he wont stick it out, but you can still understand where he's coming from, this is another thing that will chip at Traps tenure in the job. Wexford man and Sunderland club man David Meyler will replace him.

The good news, Shane Long scored against Everton!

I think he'll start McClean, he suits him, classic style winger that is decent defensively. With Long its hard to say, McCarthy hasnt a hope.

Still angry at him for his blatant diving displays vs Liverpool.
The one most important thing that we all must remember, in case it slipped our mind, is this club is much more important and bigger than anybody. I'll never forget that and anybody that does is being a wee bit irresponsible and stupid I think because the club is more important than any one individual. The Club is, The Club.

Irish XI vs Kazakhstan: Westwood, O’Shea, St. Ledger, O’Dea, Ward, Whelan, McCarthy, McGeady, Cox, Walters, Keane.

As expected no McClean or Long in the lineup, and you would have to expect baring a storming performance by McCarthy he'll be out for Andrews when he's back from suspension. A defeat tomorrow and the knives will well and truly be out, its going to be a long campaign.

Kick off in Astana tomorrow at 17:00

Why cant they try play the flanks for fuck sake, there's plenty of space in there. Kazakhstan are happy to line three big men back there and rebound the ball back after every hopeful punt, shocking stuff.
