Lucky it wasn't one of the deserted docks Tsar. I remember rumours at the time were that some people who resisted that particularly aggressive bunch ended up getting a late night soaking for their troubles.

Didn't that unit have a name? I thought it did but can't remember now, perhaps something like the special patrol group?
SPG was the name of Vyvyan's hamster in The Young Ones.....

Blimey G, you just frightened the life out of me, even from this distance! I can't swim, so not surprisingly it's my biggest dread.
SPG deffo rings a bell. I got a close-up view of how they operated that night.

The SPG were the Met's equivalent of the Liverpool Police Task Force, which became the equally infamous Operational Support Division, now renamed as Matrix.

Boss, my mum had a mini OKA 837F   :)

I'll always remember my Dads, 315 GXO

I was watching Car SOS from 2016 this morning, they were restoring a 60's Cooper S and they too OKD 986F for a drive - still had all the Police paraphernalia on it, including a working siren

My missus watches things like 24hrs in Police custody and you see the little scrotes giving the bizzies shit, swearing at them and all that. When I was a teenager, that would get you a right hiding.

Or at least a good, solid kick up the arse which got me moving after we'd flipped the vees to a Panda in 1967.

Mate of a mate got arrested and then battered by Kirkby police. They thought he was taking the piss out of them by giving a false name. Its not his fault Mrs Jones called him Tom.

Similar here when a mate of mine was stopped by traffic police..they too thought he was taking the piss when he told them his name was James Brown.

When I was a student back in the 70s, I had a mate called Chris Duck, who swore blind that his Dad was called Donald. His Dad was born in the 1920s, so it wouldn't have been odd then. He said he had to carry his birth cert round with him all the time to avoid problems.

I thought I recognised it from sometime back.

We did that Old Hall Street one about 10 years ago with the late Shankly Boy.

I think the modern viewpoint of that scene is approximately below (link in the above)...

Blimey G - 10 years!

It's worrying, this passing of time thing, and it seems to be speeding up the older you get.

And it must be almost 9 years now since Shanklyboy (Ray) passed away too. I remember having quite a few good conversations with him on here and in this thread back then. He's much missed.

Ha. That's what I meant to say.

A mate of mine was having a piss in a doorway just as a jeep pulled in. Beefy constable and skinny mustachioed sergeant (think Blakey from on the buses) jumped out.

Sergeant - 'What's he doing Constable?'
Constable - 'Having a piss, sir'
Sergeant - 'He's a dirty bastard, isn't he Constable?'
Constable - 'He's a dirty bastard, sir'

This repartee went on for a few minutes and then came the punch line;

Sergeant - 'Laddie, do you want to spend the night in the Bridewell?'
Mate - 'No sir, certainly not sir'
Sergeant - 'well you'd better wipe up this disgusting mess then.'
Mate - 'I've got nothing to wipe it up with'
Sergeant - 'Use your bloody tie then' (This was in the 1960s when clubs required blokes to wear collars and ties which kept out all the hooligans looking to start fights and break beer bottles over people's heads)

So my mate wiped up the piss, dumped the tie in the bin and the Landrover drove of to have more fun.

When the mate recounted the tale the next day we all pissed ourselves laughing until I realised that I'd lent him the tie to get in the club.

Community policing, hey?

I'd love to be wrong, it certainly looks interesting, but I'm unconvinced that's taken in Liverpool at all.

That mock Tudor frontage on that building in the background is problematic.

The only place I remember having a bit of that aside of some 30's houses and pubs in the suburbs was Eldon Gardens, certainly nothing else in town.

I see from a quick google images search that the photo appears to have been dated c1949. so by the time I started to become vaguely cogniscant of such things, c1960, I suppose it could well have been demolished.

But another thing is that the registration prefix on that car is HGJ, and as far as I can tell the GJ is for London SW, here.

In the background is a building with a sign for "PALACE" but I'm having no joy in locating that in Liverpool.

If a Liverpool location is ever determined, I'd really like to know where it was.

Cheers Gulley my initial thoughts was it was Hanover street looking towards central station possibly taken from were radio Merseyside is now . But It just didn’t sit right past the palace theatre and upon checking the history of the Neptune theatre I too replied I didn’t think it was Liverpool .

Found it!!!! It's most definitely not Liverpool.

Based on the car reg I did a google of South London Mock Tudor and then homed in on Soho and...It's The Three Hounds pub in Soho on Greek Street.

Here on Google Streetview

Everything fits, the chimneys next door etc.

The photographer must have been on a quick dirty weekend... ;)

Unlike some old pictures Tsar, that was surprisingly easy once I  thought about possibilities and purely on a hunch homed in on South London Mock Tudor soho  and it only took a couple of minutes as it's near the top of the images. A quick streetview then on the pub and Bob's your uncle, it all fitted perfectly (That Palace sign in the background is the rear of the Palace Theatre.. http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/PalaceTheatre.htm).

Anyone with a facebook account, can you let this lot know... https://www.facebook.com/MerseysideOnFilm/photos/pb.117328092222335.-2207520000../534911770463963/?type=3&theater and credit RAWK ta?

Just checked all the comments and someone else has posted it (about 4 hours ago according to facebook time)...
