The top reason I like this signing is because it directly  fixes a problem we faced last season. Salah goes down in the CL final and who do we bring on? He is the solution to that problem. Not saying he would have won us the game but at least we have the option and flexibility now.

 The other two key signings also answer problems the squad had. We were always quite small, so we bring in a 6 who is a beast in the air as well on the ground and we were missing that player who could link the defense and attack quickly in transition, Keita. The squad is almost perfectly balanced apart from the goalkeeper issue and perhaps someone who can bridge the skill gap between Firmino and Solanke.

No Wilson in the squad, so I'm going to guess and say he's been sent to Stoke on loan as part of this deal.

I always liked Shakiri, I think he is a player with huge talent. If he can find consistency in his game, he can really become a big player. He is only 26 and can still improve a lot.

I think we have fixed many problems that we had last year with the 3 fantastic signings we already made. I think that if we can get in a goalkeeper and maybe sign Fekir, we can definitely try to win the league this year. We are building an incredible, young and strong team, our bench will be amazing next year.

A real bargain at this price, WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HOME XHERDAN!!!

About this chart, does this highlight it as being a weakness of ours?
As a team we created the 2nd most chances and in the league last season so I don't really think so. Ours just seem to be a little more evenly spread out through the team, and I think there's arguments to be made that that is more of a strength than a weakness.

Nope, if anything I would say it's a strength. Our chances created is split across the team more and we don't rely on any single player. Here's the same data by player and by team

Some of the reactions to the signing from fans and the press remind me of the reactions to Ox signing.  I'm totally on board with this one. A great option to have.

Shaqiri is a player I would have prefered over Lallana when Rodgers signed him a few years ago, so to get him now at the price we got him: we've practically stolen one here. Fantastic addition to the squad. Now go get Fekir and a goal keeper and it would be an amazing window.

Feels like the Ox signing, a really talented lad who hasn't been able to reach his potential but after 2/3 months training with the staff here it starts to establish itself.

Today showed how light we are in the final third without the first choice three (we already knew this anyway). Shaqiri is a much more suitable option than Origi, Ings or Wilson. Bring in an AM who can play wide and our strength in depth in all outfield positions is up there with anyone in Europe. No brainer indeed!
It's hard enough remembering my opinions without remembering my reasons for them.

Shudders. And to think that Aston Villa fans thought Downing was miles better than Ashley Young.

Anyway, we digress. I trust Klopp to have seen something.

At £13m, with today's prices, that's basically free. Genuinely can't see why other teams weren't in for him, unless he'd heard Klopp wanted him and said to his agent he was only ever coming here - which is such an amazing place to be in from our end.

Got all the attributes to really push for a starting spot IMO. He's not going to be as good as Salah was last season, but I don't think Mo will either. Now with the ability to really rotate like for like, I'm seriously excited. Fekir to come (hopefully) and I'll be very excited going into the coming season... If i'm not already!

Shaqiri made his Basel club debut as a substitute on 12 July 2009 in Basel's 2009–10 season opening match against FC St. Gallen at the AFG Arena.[9] Four months later he scored his first goal for Basel in a 4–1 win over Neuchâtel Xamax at home on 9 November 2009.[10] At the end of the 2009–10 season Shaqiri won the national Double with Basel, and a year later won the League title again.

Good enough that he scored his first goal against the team our former legendary team used to manage.

he was probably but i do think that we swoop in quick and told his agent that he was only interested in joining us. hard to displace our front three but as a squad player i do think he will make a big impact. Quality and experience for such a great price.

About this chart, does this highlight it as being a weakness of ours?

It's true we had no penetrative creative midfielder last season in the main with Lallana injured, Chamberlain needing time to settle &then injury, Coutinho missing the start and then departing to Barca, and Keita needing to play out a final year at Leipzig.

In terms of Chances Created/90 though, we should have the following next season:-
Shaqiri = 2,27
Fekir = 2,14
Chamberlain = 2,03
Mane = 2,00
Salah = 1,91
Lallana (16/17) = 1,88
Firmino = 1,85
Keita = 1,79

And tactically, it's much easier to shut the supply if you have a creative hub in the team (see Hazard man marked by Herrera last season), than if you have 5 players on the pitch who are all capable of creating ~2 chances per game, which is very hard to shut that down. Probably only Man City can match or better that in terms of players who offer both penetration and creativity.

There is also Solanke (2,32 - albeit small sample size) who many hope can kick on this season after finally getting a goal at Brighton.
My first article on Anfield Index on Shaqiri. Enjoy. bit.ly/2mAq3Qd

Might we see him play in the Oxlade-Chamberlain role during the first part of the season? Seems to have a lot of the skill-set you'd want from that position (ball-carrying ability, beating a man on either side, link up play, shots from distance).
