Family Tree Searches
« on: April 20, 2005, 11:43:23 am »
After 4 years I've finally found my GGGrandfather
Bloody buggers were illiterate in days gone by,
Brodrick became Broadrick on records hence all previous searches knucked.

Anyone else trying to find lost souls ?

Biggest problem with my and a lot of Scouse families, all searches stop in Ireland due to fire at records office.

If anyone knows a way of succeeding in Ireland please let me know.

If I can help anyone get started or help where your stuck let me know

Karl

I'd quite like to do that. Would have thought you can do it on the net, but all the sites ive been to want money for it, which makes it seem like abit of a scam.

I started by typing my Grandad's full name into Google and using the exact phrase thing. I found that someone had basically already done the work, traced back to my GGGG Grandad born in 1825 who apparently lived in West Derby.

The BBC ran a "Who do you think you are?" series on family trees recently - there's some advice on tracing your family history on their website:  :wave

I've thought about trying to trace my ancestry but haven't got round to it yet.

Jim try that one with our repetitive name
William John Brodrick
my son, my father and my Ggrandfather
aparently that makes my son either
The 11th Viscount or the 4th Earl of Midleton

no wonder he struts around like he own the place

My uncle spent 20-30 years traipsing around England on his hols visiting church registries & graveyards.   Traced the family roots back to the 1400s

That said, I can honestly say I don't give a toss for any of that side of the tree.  Most were middle class London wankers.  One was an engineer on the Vyrnwyr dam.  Good for Liddypool, bad for Wales.

Most of the .com ancestry things are extremely general & unreliable and few go into the kind of detail that most are looking for.

Mum & Gran were born in Cardiff and had me in Liverpool.  Gran's side are sound as a pound.

I did quite a lot of work on mine a few years ago. A lot can be done online, but there's an awful lot of legwork involved aswell.

I got pretty much all branches back to about 1700.

Sadly, there was no family money discovered. Schlepping around some areas of Toxteth, Everton, Cheshire, Rochdale, Blackpool, Wigan and Northern Ireland raised many concernes about my alloys wheels.

Been dabbling in this malarkey myself recently and got quite far with these online searches.

Rather than forking out a costly £7/£10 a time for a copy of my ancestor's birth certificates from the GRO (just to actually confirm dates of births and parent's names), anyone know if you can view them for free at the Records Office, if you know the quarter and register number?

Can you just roll up and delve into the archives? Would appreciate any advice from Genealogist types.

Has anyone done this? Since my daughter was born, I've been curious about my family tree, because I know so little. I know my parents, aunts and uncles and my grandparents. But that is it. I'd really like to know more. I was wondering about any services in the UK that are reliable and not over priced.

And just so I can get a load of posts, if anyone has done this, what odd/criminal things do you know about generations past? ;D
