Watching that clip made me think how glad I am for rafa. I know we have been playing some crap lately but that team on show at chelsea is truly awful compared to now

Comes across very well does Cheyrou there, no hint of bitterness.

As for the new 'new' Zidane, I believe Gourcuff at Bordeaux is doing a very passable impression of the smoking genius.

Saw him play for Stade Rennais back in October when I was over there. He's still half decent  :lickin

He was always half decent - that was the problem

why isn't he still in touch with stevie and carra?

They were there when he played....a bit disappointing that they're not still in touch

Do stevie and carra care about the foreign lads

he left years ago mate and lots of others too. You don't expect Stevie and Carra(or anyone else for that matter) to stay in touch with everyone they played with?  They would be on the phone 14 hours a day.  ;D

Gerrard wouldn't speak to him anyway, not since that overhit pass against Boro in 02.

Is this the first interview in a series? Can we expect Murphy to deny his similarity to Platini? Diao to Viera?  ;D

Liverpool have probably played in bigger stadiums over the years but the quality of the pitch is unbelievable. I think it is the best playing surface in France.

Ahem.

Bruno Cheyrou is the new Zidane.

After seeing quite a few threads on here, we always see posts like, "Raheem Sterling is our new Michael Owen." and other such prophecies like, "Andy Carroll is our new John Aldridge" and other such posts.

Does this stem from natural progression? Do we yearn to have "...a new..."? Or is it a case of the Football Manager generation, having reality merge into real life.

For instance...

I remember a while back, when... Football Manager 2005/06 came out (I think), Sergio Aguero became the hottest new wonderkid. I'm not sure how it started (and maybe someone more attuned to the FM series can explain), but there was amass of rumours about that we where signing Sergio Aguero. The place I was working at the time was adamant we where signing him, there where Youtube videos being whizzed around from mobile device to mobile device, showing this lads skills, the dialogue around the dinner table was about Aguero. Anyhow, the transfer deadline came and he didn't sign, I think he signed for Bilbao or Atlético. The rumours where quashed and the dust settled.

Next effort, if I'm not mistaken, (I used to play Tranmere in Football Manager), 3 seasons later (2009-10), Liverpool signed Aguero from Independente, for about 30 million, (in the game). Is it salient to think that some of the rumours that where circulating about at the time where a direct result of the implications of this demon of a game? What's more strange, is that in that very same game, (the season before we signed him, if my dates are right), Torres signed for Chelshite, every single time. Coincidence, I know, but what's even more bizarre, is that, if you played in that very same game, as Liverpool, and then took control of Chelsea too, bought all of Liverpool's players for whatever Chelsea had in their bin, then resigned, Rafa Benitez became the new Chelsea boss.

Yes, this is all conjecture of course. But there have been some shocking "likes" in the past, one for example, is the famous "Bruno Cheyrou is the new Zidane", which was more than likely backed up by a few of our French friends, right here on this forum.

Question is, (back to the point), why do we do this? Is it good for comparisons? Who else Ici Anfield have lived up to this comparison? Who hasn't? Who Should?

I know it sounds mad, but a bit of both, as at least, in this one instance (as above), the two seemed to be inextricably linked. They are both speculative, and I personally have seen the instances, where the two have been linked.

We've had some absolute bollocks transfer rumours around, especially since the inception of twitter, but I can't help but feel in my heart of hearts that, a lot of these come from this game.

Just wondered if there where any other speculative instances that members had experienced, or, had any thoughts at all about how the FM generation influences real life football, on a non-professional level of course. (i.e, I'm pretty sure Purslow didn't use FM to scout players, did he?)

It's nothing new though, comparisons have always happened, it's natural. Fowler was compared to Jimmy Greaves as the most natural finisher since Greaves.  Probably just got worse over the last 10 years and taken to the extreme.

The error with this line of thinking is that the players he brought in aren't particularly good in FM.

Mate, generic player number 8 at Hoffstentown United, in the North Park Sunday league that just put me out of the cup on FIFA 13 is the next Henry, sign him up.

In all seriousness.
To be honest I am never a fan of labeling a young player the next someone, at some level, even if sub-consciously, it puts them into a box (regardless of their own or the managers "level of attention" to tabloid fodder). I would rather the next someone, just be THE them self, let them develop to the unique player, with unique strengths only they can become.
