After seeing quite a few threads on here, we always see posts like, "Raheem Sterling is our new Michael Owen." and other such prophecies like, "Andy Carroll is our new John Aldridge" and other such posts.
Does this stem from natural progression? Do we yearn to have "...a new..."? Or is it a case of the Football Manager generation, having reality merge into real life.
For instance...
I remember a while back, when... Football Manager 2005/06 came out (I think), Sergio Aguero became the hottest new wonderkid. I'm not sure how it started (and maybe someone more attuned to the FM series can explain), but there was amass of rumours about that we where signing Sergio Aguero. The place I was working at the time was adamant we where signing him, there where Youtube videos being whizzed around from mobile device to mobile device, showing this lads skills, the dialogue around the dinner table was about Aguero. Anyhow, the transfer deadline came and he didn't sign, I think he signed for Bilbao or Atlético. The rumours where quashed and the dust settled.
Next effort, if I'm not mistaken, (I used to play Tranmere in Football Manager), 3 seasons later (2009-10), Liverpool signed Aguero from Independente, for about 30 million, (in the game). Is it salient to think that some of the rumours that where circulating about at the time where a direct result of the implications of this demon of a game? What's more strange, is that in that very same game, (the season before we signed him, if my dates are right), Torres signed for Chelshite, every single time. Coincidence, I know, but what's even more bizarre, is that, if you played in that very same game, as Liverpool, and then took control of Chelsea too, bought all of Liverpool's players for whatever Chelsea had in their bin, then resigned, Rafa Benitez became the new Chelsea boss.
Yes, this is all conjecture of course. But there have been some shocking "likes" in the past, one for example, is the famous "Bruno Cheyrou is the new Zidane", which was more than likely backed up by a few of our French friends, right here on this forum.
Question is, (back to the point), why do we do this? Is it good for comparisons? Who else Ici Anfield have lived up to this comparison? Who hasn't? Who Should?
