a wee bit melodic for my personal taste but then that's why they sell out stadiums.

you see i think sasha is more trance than house or techno.

it seems sterilised of sex appeal to me with endless floaty bits broken up by extended drum passages.

its like bad cocaine sex you just never quite get there.

sex on ketamine ;D

is this on plus8 richie hawtin's old label or am i reading things wrong?  much more my cup of tea than the sasha stuff though definitely at the tougher end of the spectrum for my tastes.

@dowling what is richie playing these days?  is he still mr minimal or warming up a bit now the last wave has crashed?  i went to a party at his villa in ibiza five years ago that was a bit special: richie hawtin; villalobos; magda; troy pierce; matthew dear; toby neuman and marco carolla were playing after cocoon.  it was a great day with thunder and lightening bringing the evening to a climax after an all dayer at their mega pad.

villaobos and tobi neuman went down best for me as they kept things housey which i think works a bit better than the full bore tech assault at least during the daytime.  the ladies loved it too ;D

i'm out of the house at the minute but will post some links to a cracking villalobos mix someone sent my way the other day.  on form he's pretty much unstoppable.

i've been very much enjoying this villalobos remix of carl craig and moritz von oswald:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvxIHVcFPcg

based around a sample from ravel's bolero conducted by herbert von karajan its got a drifting very late night/early morning drifting lysergic charm.

five dancing men from the hassinator.

the flip side is a c2 (carl craig) four to the floor club track.

value indeed.

I fucking hate house music.

Now that's out of the way, I'll add that I do, because I can't understand it, and its the antithesis of everything i enjoy in music  :-\

I listen to music to dance, so I need something to dance to, and for me, house music just seems to have an endless repetitive beat, that's too slow to dance to, and no lines or lyrics in general to get people anywhere near at least excited. The DJs who play it seem to be no talent hacks, instead of mixing, one song just blends to the next, and they seem to play house solely for that reason, because they couldn't adequately mix anything else.

So could someone who's more familiar with house enlighten me a bit? Is it because house is simply not meant for dancing, rather its meant to chill out to? Or has the house I've been listening to been shite?

hey valore i would guess that you maybe just haven't had a good house dj yet or heard in the right context.  i can't tell you why you should like it but i can tell you how i got into it.  i first head acid house and techno on john peel's radio show back in 1986 with a couple of the tracks starting to cross over into the uk charts.  i found it exciting enough to want to move to london in the summer of 1988 and pursue the party.  at the time i was into lank indie music more through default than anything else - the north of ireland seemed to be in thrall to hair metal at the time and whatever i was going to be into it certainly wasn't that.

getting to london and hearing colin faver and mark moore playing back to back at pyramid pretty much changed my life.  it was a damascene moment.  everything that had gone before seemed dull, derivative and out of date.  there was no band to watch, no song to interpret just a big wall of sexy sound, flickering strobes and throbbing basslines.  fuck the wedding present this was it.

the very best exponents for me over the years have shifted though andrew weatherall has remained a constant from the early balearic and indie dance days through progressive house (in its early days it was very exciting); proper house; techno and electro.  its probably no accident that he and harvey remain ricardo villalobos favourite djs.  right now for me i really like the new generation of post-dc-10 djs that make things interesting particularly jamie jones; lee foss; matthew styles and the french kids dyed soundoroom and shonky.

all of them can play that little nexus between house and techno; move the floor; weird you out but, most importantly, keep the ladies happy as no one wants a sausage party.  well i certainly don't anyway ;D

in terms of dj's who just play generic tracks that's not really for me.  i think any really good dj should be intent on taking his audience on a journey.  there needs to be ups and downs, peaks and troughs.  if someone is just banging it out unrelentingly there's nowhere to go and when you get to my age you like the little lulls before the storm unleashes again.

what ..... is ....... house?

A question asked a long time ago.

The answer isn't simple. One mans house is another mans castle. I'm as confused as the next man, so I find it easier not to worry and just get on with enjoying good music. As Hassinator says 'i would guess that you maybe just haven't had a good house dj yet or heard in the right context'.

Thats all there is to say on that.

Yeah my mate who DJ's in clubs loves them..says he's played there stuff in allsorts of places and it's always went down really well...

Speaking of journey's ive been listening to Gui Boratto's essential mix from 2009 loads lately...for some reason i'd always passed it over thinking it might be slighty commercial....wrong it's a wonderfully crafted 2hr journey of melodic techno, great for sticking on after a big night out or a long drive.

only plays his own stuff too the gifted fucker.

oh completely agree.  my taste is for muscular, percussive, electronic drug music.  i think the best dj's play that sound in a way that doesn't just make it go bang, bang and by that i mean scare off the ladies.  i used to love wiggle in the mid-90s but there would literally be about 10 girls there and three of them had come with me.  the five card trick for me is excellent music, fit girls and a killer venue.

doc martin is the don daddy from the west coast.  i first heard of him as the resident of san francisco's wicked parties which were set up by rave refugees the tonka sound system.  one of their biggest parties was in a forest on a mountain and they brought dj legend and perhaps the coolest living white person to rock the party.  i did a shoot over there a few years after it and it turned out the producer used to be doc's driver - fat because of his love of mexican junk food - and when i asked who his fave dj ever was he said: 'have you ever heard of this limey dude called harvey...?'

here is a link to one of harvey's biggest remixes for extended family.  this is a BIG record which i've heard him work in the mix for up to half and hour:

on a similar shouty precussive tip derrick carter's old label classic are reissuing some of the pearls from their back catalogue.  this goes into phonica today and has been big with ewan pearson for the past 6 years.

its 3rd face 'canto del liberta' and very limited:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkqHEVD42Q8

you might also want to try to get hold of the brett johnson world of pain remix of belfast's bubba and scoper 'satisfied' which rips the hook from the theme tune to napoleon dynmatite in a devestating fashion:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53nCGC3w9XM

its all about the breakdown...

blimey the nous sommes track reminds me of belgium circa 1990 - those angry was noises seem a bit much to me but i'm sure it was big moment for the big man.

the size track is more my cup of tea and would work well with the harvey and brett johnson remixes i've posted above.  dirty, dirty.

downloading this now - thank you sir - and also enjoying the interview not least his faves:

"*What are a few new artists that you think are really blowing your mind right now?
The new Freaks stuff(Ouch)  Jamie Jones, Argy ,Peter Kruder(Not new,but a new sound for him),Dixon,Henrick Schwarz, Revenge, Melon, Michel Cleis to name a few."

this would be pretty much where my heads at these days: luke solomon and justin harris new freaks album is superb and they started classic with derrick carter back in the 90s.  we shared an office together and they are very good eggs.

jamie jones is my favourite dj.  end of.  no one plays house quite like he does at the moment and his hot natured disco project with lee foss is superb.

peter kruder has always played house on the side though is obviously more known for the chilled out bliss of kruder and dorfmeister.  he reminds me of terry francis in his prime as he plays clipped, percussive tech-house with hints of fragmented melody that really set it off.

dixon and henrik schwartz really do it for me.  at first listen to a mix they used to seem a little too soulful for my tastes but there's always a 'house first' undercurrent of insistent, clicking rhythms and a luminescent psychedelic thread running through the lot of it.

i'm sure it will be big but a little 'route one' for my taste.

i've done videos for axwell and eric prydz in the past and i know both of them do more underground stuff but not really for me.

I'm struggling to think who it could be.They say its someone making there debut on the show. When you look back at who's played on EM over the years it reads like a who's who of all genres of dance music and doesn't leave many options to choose from.

I'd hope they choose and old skool DJ but they've already played on the show.

I'm truly stumped.
