I believe he has a few.

But do you really think there's enough to mention?

Nah, probably too few. If I'm being honest.

Ah, didn't realise that. Thought it was originally Elvis. Seems he did it a year later after Brenda Lee - outside of the top 40 in 1973 usa country charts... not my speciality.

Surprised "Step On" by the Happy Mondays hasn't been mentioned. It's always a popular choice.

For me:

White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
Al Green - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
John Mayer - Kid A
Rolling Stones - Time Is On My Side
Johnny Cash - Hurt

And I'll get slated for this...

Sheryl Crow - First Cut Is The Deepest
Sterophonics - Handbags and Gladrags

Anyway I'll venture Stevie Wonder - We Can Work it Out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA5nboJWgZY

Hadn't heard that before. I like it, not sure it's better than The Beatles version though. Joe Cocker's with a little help from my friends is deffo superior to the original though.
Balotelli, Falcao, Cavani...

Anyone heard Biffy Clyro's version of that song "Umbrella"? That and Arctic Monkey's version of "Love Machine" are great, because you get to listen to decent songs without feeling embarrassed about having Girls Aloud or <whovever-sings-Umbrella> on your iPod.

I also dig Train's version of Wild Horses, Stay With Me and Ramble On.

Hmm Cash did do a good job with Hurt, but Trent Reznor's live version of that song is amazing.

Saying that, he did say that upon hearing Cash's cover it made him want to make music again.

Alien Ant Farm: Smooth Criminal

Wheatus: Respect

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqgGfC8A5-c

Takes a (long) while to get into that Wheatus video, but it's pretty funny and the song turns out to be decent.

I'd say my favorite remake is The Ataris' cover of Boys of Summer, by Don Henley or whoever.

I also like:

Sugar Ray - Abracadabra.    Originally by the Steve Miller Band.
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World.    Originally by David Bowie.
311 - Love Song.    Originally by the Cure.

There are no cover versions of Hank Williams Snr's records that are even remotely better than the originals. Especially not I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. Especially that one.

You see, there it is.

I'm a closet Norah Jones fan, she's just so sweet, and I was listening to her version of Cold, Cold Heart, and then I remembered your comment and others, and I thought "let's go see the original", which I did, and I'm sorry but I only like one of 'em, and it ain't Hank.

That's not because he's no good, that's because I plain don't like country. Don't like the chuck chews and the dull rhythm and the scoopy note sequences. Very by the numbers music. Whereas give me a soft shuffle, an incidental piano and a boozy bass note, like Norah brought, and I'm yours. Personal taste, I suppose. Have a pick...

I bloody well hope you didn't listen to the original via youtube.

Perhaps you and I have different musical tastes.....I have to admit while I wouldn't go out of my way to hurt, maim or injure Norah Jones, if she was standing in the middle of the road I wouldn't swerve.

Let's see, a musical, MOR lightweight with zero artistic integrity compared to a genre defining artist whose searing brilliance has influenced thousands of others.

It is over 50 years since Hank Williams death and people are still covering his songs......including Norah Jones. If anyone is covering Norah Jones five years after her death, whether she is run over or not, I will be extremely surprised

The phrase "putting things in perspective" comes to mind.

BTW isn't Nora Jones the daughter of Ravi Shankar? Or is it Nat King Cole? Andy Cole?

 ??? ;D
