Six Nations 2020
« on: January 21, 2020, 11:30:36 am »
Not far off now, anyone going to any matches?

https://www.sixnationsrugby.com/fixtures-2020/

France v England is a big one in the first weekend, some new faces for England and Shaun Edwards coaching France.

Any predictions?

Spending the weekend in Rome for the Italy-England game. Mainly for the sights, weather and cheap wine.
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

Have Season Passes for Murrayfield so off to the two Scotland home games (England and France).

A lot off changes to coaching teams so really difficult to know what to predict really.

Eddie Jones squad selection sure has some interesting new faces in it.

Off to Murrayfield as well for the England game, last went in 2016. Hope it's a bit warmer.

Not sure I can get so invested in this in a post World Cup year. Feels a bit anti-climactic (unless we win in Paris and we get on a roll). Lots of teams rebuilding I assume? Who are favourites?

England are odds on at 8/11. Way too skinny I'd say even if I think we should win it with Ireland and Wales at Twickenham. No Friday night games which is most disappointing.

Looks like England have picked a fair bit of size in the forwards after the bullying they recieved in the world cup final, no specialist number 8 is a bit mad, especially with Alex Dombrandt and Nathan Hughes playing well

Think Scotland will struggle this year. France and England at home, would hope to beat France out of those and can only see us beating Italy away.

We've lost 3 important players in Laidlaw, Barclay and Seymour since the World Cup. Not convinced by Townsend so far, think he needs to at least show some signs of progress here after the disappointing World Cup.

Trust me, it won’t be 😁

17:15 KO so just get well “insulated” beforehand and you will be fine.

Got tickets for Wales v Scotland to watch us seal another Grand Slam! 😉

Who was the bloke who headed up the main road in a golf buggy at 5 mph trying to get back to his hotel after a night out? Anyway, my guess is something like that. Or he threw snowballs at Gregor Townsend and told him to do one or something.

Andy Powell! That was after a post-match function I think which is a nice old school touch. The England boys are normally the ones who are guilty of training camp misdemeanours.

The Saracens relegation will hang over alot of the players. Plus the post-world cup hangover.

I think once it starts I can enjoy it more but right now it all feels very meh

That was nearly two years ago mate. And these guys are rugby players, I highly doubt they’ll still care that we lost against Croatia. And we won the cricket one, so they’ll probably still be bouncing about that one.

Fucking idiot. He's our best player IMO (even above Hogg) but if above is true he needs to be disciplined, no player bigger than the team.

There's been rumours for the last year he doesn't get on well with Townsend, so don't know if that has played a part, or if it it just playing iin France has rubbed off on him....  ;D

Duncan Weir been called up to replace him, who by all accounts has been excellent for Worcester this season, but Townsend has shown no interest in calling him up in the past. Fully expected Pete Horne to get the call up but seems Townsend has lost faith in him and he isn't a 10.

Darcy Graham now out of the Ireland game, and probably the England game as well. Now without our best fly half and best winger.

Really looking forward to seeing what this new French squad can do. U20 champions in 2018 and 2019, new captain, loads of uncapped players and Shaun Edwards in the coaching team.

Tough start for them and I don't think many would give them a chance against England on Sunday but could be good.

Just seen that there's been a Grand Slam winner the year after the last three World Cups (Wales 2008, 2012, England 2016). Think England's continuity in selection and the coach will be a big plus. Hard to know what to expect from Wales and Ireland under new coaches. If England win their first two games, they have a great chance of a Grand Slam imo, especially with Wales and Ireland at home. It's a big if though.

I think he did in the last Six Nations, maybe the World Cup. Try not to watch Wales too often so can’t say for sure! But now they have a few younger wingers coming through they’ve moved him inside.

England team named. No Mako Vunipola, and the back row looks odd on paper - Lawes at 6, Underhill moves to 8 and Curry at 7.  I'd probably stick with Underhill/Curry at 6 and 7 and put a specialist 8 like Simmonds at 8.
And stop using 'Finishers' FFS

They'll still probably win the tournament, but it's like Jones can't help himself with the tinkering.

Who the fuck is George Furbank? Don’t think we have a specialist 8 in the squad, apart from in the set piece does the number in the back matter too much?

Nothing wrong with ‘Finishers’. Pick on Trumps if you want to go down the ridiculous names for rugby things route.

So you'll are cool with "three quarters" but not first five and second five?

You're right about the modern idea of an 8. It used to be your most skilled and explosive forward that went there but they all interchange now.

I'd like to think of Beauden Barrett as a mix between a full back and a first five eight, which makes him a perfect 13/16th back [(1 +(5/8))/2.]

Jesus, that joke was so laboured it's like an Irish pick-and-go from a static ruck.

Fractional gains.

Gah! bringing Barrett up just reminds me of why I am extra sour on the upcoming rugby season downunder. He has only gone and left the Hurricanes for the Blues. He will probably make them contenders while we slump back to our pre-Barrett levels.

I have lived through decades of Wellington and the Canes having shite numbers 10s. Makes a world of difference having a good'un, as the Blues know.

Full back from Northampton. Having a pretty good season. Daly has not looked great at 15 so I'm all for putting him back on the wing and trying someone else there.

Depends what you want your back row to do. Underhill and Curry worked really well at 6 and 7 because of their workrate and skill at the breakdown. You then have your carriers at numbr 8 and in the tight 5. Number 8 should have been Simmonds, Ben Earl or Ted Hill imo. Can't stand seeing Lawes at 6.

Can't see Scotland doing too much other than fifth (perhaps fourth if France's new crop fail). Defensively we are still frail although we do excite in attack. Glad to see Blair Kinghorn being utilised but a pity Darcy Graham is out as he's box office.
