I got a 'caution' on the train......
« on: November 5, 2009, 04:11:19 pm »
....for having my feet on the seat opposite!

Yesterday, coming home from having passed my driving theory test so was in a good mood.  On quite an empty train as it was around midday, I sat there with my feet on the seat in front of me as I had 5 seats to myself.

Sitting there listening to my Ipod, a few ticket inspectors come along.  I show one my ticket.  His mate obviously tells another that my feet are on the seat as the older one comes over to me with his pad out and tells me that he's going to have to caution me.  I nearly laughed.  He then pointed to a sign behind me which I still didn't look at.

He then took my details down on his little pad, phoned someone to check it was all correct, and said I'd be getting a letter which would probably be a warning.  He said if I don't reply I'll probably get a fine.

Apprently I committed an offence of a by-law or something.

OK it's not the nicest thing having to sit on a seat after someone has had their feet on it, but come on, how many people do it?  It's not like I had filthy trainers on (I know that's not the point).

I just think it's quite pathetic that they're going round giving cautions out for things like that when so much is wrong and there's so much they can improve with public transport.

I suppose rules are rules and all that, but it does seem a bit stupid. Surely a "can you take your feet off the seat mate, there is a sign behind you" would've been suffice. If you ignored that, then fair enough.

I bet the man with the pad got bullied at school.

That's it, I wouldn't have minded if I completely ignored him.  I didn't see the sign as I had my back to it.

I'm not one for flouting rules and while this one is not totally ridiculous, the reaction to it is well over the top.  Surely the amount of puke, food and booze that ends up on the seat is just as bad as what might or might not be on the bottom/hell of someone's shoe!  But would anyone get a warning for eating?

I was once on a train with a friend and we had our feet up on the seats, two old ladies on the other side of the train told us rather sharply to take our feet off of the seats. When we asked why they were so upset about it they said because our shoes would dirty the chairs (fair enough if it was raining but it was a lovely summer's day) so with that I proceeded to take off my shoes and continued with the comfort of having my feet up :)

Inspector: I'm afraid son, you broke the 11th Commandment, "thou shalt not put feet on seats".

Once I put put my bag on the seat opposite me and rested my feet on that, so that any dirt would be on my bag not for other passengers. Along comes Mr Inspector, sees me leaningg back, but couldnt see my feet (he was coming from the wrong direction). Anyway the look on his face is like thunder, I can tell he's going to come and have a go, when he arrives he's already starting to lecture me and realises that I don't have my feet on the seat.

The trumped-up prick must have been gutted when he eventually said "hmm thats not a bad idea there son".

Whenever I'm on the train for a few hours, and it's not very busy, I usually stick my feet on the opposite chair and grab a couple hours kip. However, I do something, really, really, clever, something out of this world, that almost no one thinks of, because it's so clever.

I take my shoes off.

I understand why your not allowed to put your feet on the seats and thats fine.

But i just think its so tempting to stretch your legs out and relax, especially when your over 6ft tall. The empty opposite seat looks at you and you can almost hear it "straight legs, oooh it would be lovely to have straight legs, sitting back with your feet up oooooooooh lovely".

So is the general idea, that you CAN do it, but just not with your shoes on?

If there's a seat in front me, my feet are up like a shot.  Only complete gayers would sit normally for 4 hours.
I got away with sitting in first class last year, despite a conductor on my arse telling me to move.  I had a ticket for standard class but the rest of the carriages were full as far as I could see, whereas 1st class was basically empty.
Fuck off, shift me then, and refund my ticket, and what's your fucking name son?
Meh, they're just doing a job but then again I'm just trying to get somewhere and I've paid to do it, so show me some respect mate.

If its both legs, they're against the seat in front (but only if theres no one sitting there)
If it's one leg its on my own seat.
