Saw an article there asking, "is Jordan Pickford following Joe Hart's career path?". I'd say that's harsh on Joe Hart - he was at least decent for a few years and won two league titles. Then even at his worst he's never made the embarrassing howlers on a weekly basis that this mental midget does.

It's incredible how little scrutiny there is on him, largely because he plays for a shit, irrelevant club. Even despite the media's absolute unwillingness to criticise him, his time is surely nigh. Don't see him ever getting back to good form either.

On the subject of the media's unwillingness to really criticise, this piece from Jonathan Liew sums it up:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2020/jul/14/jordan-pickfords-unique-talent-can-still-help-england-despite-his-slump

Basically, acknowledges he's shite and this may even be something more terminal than bad form, but maybe England should pick him anyway because he's good at saving penalties. Liew is the new Barney Ronay - nice language, braindead ideas on football.

Barney Ronay has some lovely (and insightful) pieces. I think Lieu might be ok too. But that article is nonsense top to bottom.

And Pickford can kick the ball a long way, don't forget that skill.

Probably further than Pope or Henderson' kicks added together.

Indeed, his game might have been designed for international tournaments, where the emotional pitch is higher, the press less frenzied and goalkeepers allowed more time on the ball. But to get that far, he will need to improve fast.

He’s suited to international football because most international teams are shit and so Pickford can get away with being utterly crap?  Interesting take.

Every time I hear him talked about in the media (mostly the only stuff I listen to is football weekly and totally football so it's a small sample) they talk about him being "good with his feet" and this is why he will likely keep his England spot ahead of other options.

However I've never seen anyone quantify this and every time I've watched him he's been garbage with the ball so... I don't get it.  Is there some repository of stats out there that justifies the talk or what?

Today was special.  He always seems to dive over shots, especially those close to him, but to dive the wrong way is interesting.  I had to double check that he hadn't dived before the ball was struck.

I've always thought that most keepers dont use their feet often enough for shots close to their body (they almost all try to get their body to them and I get the principal behind that but the time it takes to get your body down compared to a foot would seem more risky to me... but what the fuck do I know I guess) but he seems to be an extreme case.

There have been some real shit house keepers on Merseyside the past number of years.... but Pickford really takes the cake for being
not only the worst but the most hated and ugliest looking.

So to that, I say Thank You Pickford.

This sort of lazy bullshit analysis is precisely the reason I don't listen to those podcasts you mentioned. I think people who don't watch a lot of Pickford have seen him ping one or two passes for England (there was one vs Spain away in particular that led to a goal and got disproportionately lauded) and they think he does this on a regular basis. While he does look like he has good technique in striking a ball, his actual success with long passes is seriously poor every time I've watched him in a full game and he's not particularly comfortable with short passing under pressure either.

The media cling to his distribution as his one inarguable asset, and yet he looks like an amateur compared to the likes of Alisson and Ederson in this department.

Yep.  All they can do is sign a new keeper and drop him to the bench until he takes the hint.  But he's so arrogant he'll probably stay there for the wages just to spite them.

Catches it? Ali would calmly drop a knee, flick it up of his thigh, control it on his forehead and then lash a 70 yard ball straight to the feet of Mo.
