Why would he get rid of the bulk? He might drop his body-fat percentage, for sure. Which I'm almost certain is what happened with Ox. But not the muscle.

In every players career they have a moment where it all clicks and they decide that they are going to squeeze every last drop of talent out of themselves. Sometimes they’re 15 and go on to have great careers (Milner), sometimes they’re 26 and they’ve had to see the other side of the game before they reach the top.

For me, that’s what I think will happen with Shaqiri. He’s been the wonderkid, he’s been at a big club and then he’s been on the other end where he’s a big cheese at a small club that doesn’t really matter. Now he’s had an opportunity arise that he knows he’s lucky to get and he’s going to grasp it and make sure he never drops below this level again. When a player as naturally talented as him decides that he’s going to get everything out of himself, it’s a recipe for success.

Well it would be pretty impressive if he cut down his body fat percentage without losing any of the muscle. Something only Real Madrid players seem capable of doing.

Just because he had a glorious debut for us does not mean every game will be like that, but I am seeing a thread here of us seeing him him being up a level now he is one of us, and watching the replay, he had a subtly great game, apart from the assist & goal. Could it be that he was a fish out of water at Stoke, and now he is in the ideal environment? And think, we still have a first team with Naby, Alisson & Bobby in it to come. I have the slightest suspicion I will be enjoying our footy again this season.

Impressed me with his hold up play and lay off for Sturridge.  More so than the overhead kick - you can see him pulling off that hold up play all the time whereas that goal was a rarity.    Someone so squat, his strength is in his balance/gravity.

His best quality, however, is his enthusiasm.

Klopp's gonna take the leash of this little bulldog.

Among the top 4, we are the ideal club for him with the way we are set up.

Everyone turns to shit in Utd, City had Sane, Sterling, Silva, KDB in the winger/forward position, Spurs do not operate with wide forwards.

His career has been a bit up and down. We were linked with him before he went to Bayern and then of course he did stabilised his career and proved himself to be an enigma. I think he will be on an upward trajectory from here.

Increased protein intake, maintain or slightly increase strength training. Minimal muscle loss, if any :)

The way people here talk about "losing the bulk", they seem to be talking about going from this -

To this -

On top of that, there is literally no reason for Shaqiri to lose muscle mass.

Was just being a pedant. Unless you’re new to weight lifting or are overweight, neither of which apply to Shaqiri, you cannot have a calorie defecit without losing some muscle mass and strength. You can obviously minimise it through proper nutrition and supplements, though.

I’d also imagine most footballers diets consist of enough protein already so doubt they’d benefit from any increase.

Depends on the club. Some don't give a shit what you eat and expect you to look after yourself, others give you a prescribed diet. Then it also comes down to the personal athletic preferences and knowledge of the manager dictating the whole programme.

Don't think he said anything about Ox, but with Gomez it seems it was more of a weight thing that Kloppo had a concern about with Gomez, but he seemed to equate him carrying too much bulk, to being to heavy.

The quotes where:

"When he came back (from that long injury) he got injured and then when he came back again he was heavy.

"He had a lot of muscle and you only need muscles like that if you're only going to the beach or whatever.

"We had to work on this and now he's back. He lost weight, he's really fit, he looks sharp. There are still things to improve.

Yup was about Gomez coming back looking like a heavyweight boxer. He looked way off, partly injury recovery based but also because he was slow on the turn and just generally not at all agile; funnily enough this happened with Kelly as well who looked shit when he came back looking like Conan the Barbarian, although nothing was done about it at that time under Rodgers.

There's a tipping point with athletes that ties in with specialisation. 70% of all athletes probably follow a similar diet & basic conditioning plan but then the other 30 is the specialisation aspect. Shaqiri definitely doesn't need to lose bulk (or muscle mass) he's a good size, I think the conditioning and dietary plans we do here (which the club and klopp put an immense emphasis on) will no doubt make bring him in line to everyone else here so long as he follows them.

Only saw the last 30 mins or so of the match. Apart from the assist and the goal his all round play was great.

Love his one touch passing. Was also looking for the ball always. Really wants to impress for sure.

Jurgen said in his press conference that he gave him a free role. Not sure if that will happen in most of the games he plays but he put in a good shift from what I saw.

Depends on the club. Some don't give a shit what you eat and expect you to look after yourself, others give you a prescribed diet. Then it also comes down to the personal athletic preferences and knowledge of the manager dictating the whole programme.

Is this still true somewhere on the Premier League level? I find it hard to believe even about Stoke, as hard as the idea that Charlie Adam would actually follow a prescribed diet. If Sam Allardyce got the message 15 years ago, and Premier League has very few British Stone Age managers left, it would be interesting to know if some clubs are still resisting. Would be useful for evaluating their betting odds...

Ha. It was called Oil of Ulay in the 1970s. We had a posh Aunty who used it so back then it was up market.

Still not sure why the name was changed, it may be that Ulay was offensive in some countries whereas Olay was innocuous.

Ha. It was called Oil of Ulay in the 1970s. We had a posh Aunty who used it so back then it was up market.

Still not sure why the name was changed, it may be that Ulay was offensive in some countries whereas Olay was innocuous.

It's to keep their marketing/packaging costs down, so all European countries were using the same brand name. The comedy is, now everyone in the UK is now used to Olay, they've gone and changed it to Olaz (in Italy at least)!

Increased protein intake, maintain or slightly increase strength training. Minimal muscle loss, if any :)
...
On top of that, there is literally no reason for Shaqiri to lose muscle mass.

Increased upper body weight (whether fat or muscle) increases the strain on lower body muscles, joints, etc, when playing sports like footy, thus increasing risk of injury. Klopp is right not to want players too "beach ready", as that kind of muscle adds little to a footballers ability to play football.
