Match 28 Update:

Looking at the results so far this season, you have to be optimistic as a Liverpool fan. There will be more draws and losses for City away from home, they have some really tough away trips coming up.
Last resort if you need tickets in Switzerland.

Am I right in saying that we picked up just 14 points from the same remaining fixtures last year?

Match 29 update:

I remain pretty positive when looking at the two graphs comparing us and City. They look very likely to be dropping more points in their 4 away games to ManUtd, Palace, Brighton and Burnley. If we do our job at home and beat the dross away (Cardiff, Fulham), it could very well be enough :)

Last few weeks have fucked up that graph. Could have been great to have just green for the bottom half sides.

Arsenals top six exploits are finished, so I think they’re favourites for top four out of the four teams going for 3/4.

Which is good, I don’t mind Arsenal. What’s uncomfortable is hoping Chelsea grab the fourth spot.

I don't often look at this thread but it's interesting to see spurs at the top of the away league. They're really just terrible at home.
if I came home to allison in bed with my wife I'd ask him to phone Virgil to see if he wanted to pop round too.

Keep in mind that because of their stadium debacle, they’ve played more away than the next two teams, who could overtake them with same number of games played.

Totally agreed on the home form.

What are the teams you consider for the promoted/relegated team swaps for calculating equivalent points?

I use Swansea - Wolves, Stoke - Cardiff, West Brom - Fulham.

We drew at Newcastle, and against Spurs and Chelsea at Anfield. That means only 15 points from remaining 7 fixtures and 76+15=91. How do you arrive at 92?

Should be 89 still? Only 13 from the 7 games last season if matched?

You're right PiM, it should be 91.

It's what I originally had, then was influenced by RooiBefok's post in the alternative premier league table thread...I should have gone back & checked it before I posted it.

If City have the same as last year they will draw 2 of their remaining games. I think I'd probably settle for that now

In the Premier League era (a fairly decent sample size), only two teams have ever done better over the first 32 games than our current 79 points.

Man City had 87 points at this stage last year.  Chelsea had 81 points in 04/05.

Man City can get to 80 points if they do win their next game (their 32nd) this season.

We are one of three teams to have had 79 points, but our GD of +53 is the best.  Also Man Utd in 11/12 (+51) and Chelsea in 05/06.

The 4 previous teams to have had at least 79 points after 32 games finished:

FIRST - MCI 17/18 with 100 points  (highest total ever)

FIRST - CHE 04/05 with 95 points  (second highest total ever)

FIRST - CHE 05/06 with 91 points  (joint fourth best for 38 game PL season)

SECOND - MUN 11/12 with 89 points  (joint eight best for 38 game PL season)

Incidentally, our highest ever points tally is 90 from 40 games (87/88).

In 38 game seasons, these are the only times that we have reached 79 points:

86 points - 2008/09  (finished second)

84 points - 2013/14  (finished second)

82 points - 2005/06  (finished third)

80 points - 2001/02  (finished second)

79 points - 1989/90  (finished champions)

So after playing Cardiff at Home, 4 out of 6 remaining PL games for City are away from home - Burnley, Palace, Brighton and OT. If they win all of those, they'd deserve the title. It'll be a massively tall ask though. Even their remaining home games are Leicester and Spurs, neither are easy to play against. In these exact fixtures we dropped 4 points this season.

If we go the opposite route, after Soton Away, only 2 of our remaining 5 PL games are away from home - Cardiff and Newcastle (both could be tricky but compared to City's fixtures, relatively easier). The remaining home games would be Chelsea, Huddersfield and Wolves. In these same fixtures this season City dropped 3 points (loss at Newcastle).

We now have 25 wins.

This is the second most that we have ever had in a top flight season of 38 games (or less).  We got 26 wins in 13/14.

We finished with  25 wins from 38 games in 2008/09 and 2005/06.

We got 26 wins from 40 games in 1987/88.

From 42 games, we got:  30 wins (1978/79) and 26 wins (1963/64 and 1965/66 and 1981/82 and 1985/86).

Interesting that we're on +20 at the moment, and that we could potentially reach +22, and for that still not to be enough.

Starting from much lower bases, Leicester 2016 improved by 40 points (41 to 81) and Chelsea 2017 improved by 43 points (50 to 93).

However, starting from our already quite high total of 75, it'll be extremely impressive if we can manage to maintain the current +20 by the end of the next 4 matches.

Also extremely frightening that we might need to improve even more for 19/20.
