My first thought was putting him in the shop window but surely we wouldn't risk that. Assume Gomez isn't fully fit?
Let us never forget Rafael Benitez and what he did for us. A fighter full of guts and passion. A gentleman full of class and dignity. A football manager full of intelligence and pure genius. A Legend.
Adios Rafa, buena suerte.

James Pearce@JamesPearceLFC
Joe Gomez had been carrying a knock so only deemed fit enough for bench duty tonight so Nat Phillips makes his first PL start since May 2021 in absence of the injured Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.
Keita and Tsimikas return to the squad. Firmino absent as a precaution.
That makes more sense, so as I was saying poor Joe just can’t catch a break

Maybe Gomez has been ill, cos there can't be many other reasons he'd make the squad but not start. I'd have probably preferred Hendo at CB than Phillips, but ah well. Hopefully Phillips plays better against pace than he did in preseason. Zaha and Eze and Olise (if Phillips plays second half/last 30) aren't ideal opponents for Phillips if our midfield loses the ball to kick off counters as often as they did last week.

Shame we couldn't see a Keita start. Hopefully we're not looking for half time subs again, but if we do it's great he's available.

4th choice.  The 5th choice is Gomez apparently.

Is that why Nat was on the verge of moving until we had a mini-crisis at the back ?

Gomez is probably being eased in with an eye on the United game.

Nat will be in tough against Zaha, especially with him hardly having seen any action this preseason. Trent and Elliott will really need to help defensively.

A quite farcical level of injuries two weeks into the season

Hendrson and Keita must not be fully fit because that team is going to struggle on the counter against a team that likes to counter  - if he’s picked that midfield over those 2 with Phillips at the back then it’s incredibly ambitious … Lot of firepower obviously … maybe 3-3

It really isn't considering the amount of games we played last season, coupled with an early start to the season.

Milner and Elliott were the best midfielders last weekend so it seems he's trying to reward that. I think with the dearth of attacking subs, it might have been more sensible to have Elliott on the bench as cover for both midfield and attack, then start Keita or Henderson instead.

That’s the spirit. :D

Just need to get through tonight, then it’s another week til we play again. Time for a few players to be back for the next game (granted I said that a week ago too). But would be worse if we had a game every 4 days during this spell.

Gomez is going to be fuming.

Henderson will be the fuming one. I doubt Gomez is having no say in sitting on the bench today, and is on board with being precautionary.

Why are being precautionary with him ?

Just going to throw him at Old Trafford untested at this rate.

Agree with some other comments about looking weak in the mid, shame about Gomez etc.

I really would love to see Gomez soon. I still think he's got a big role in our future potentially, and getting some minutes has to happen at some point.

Christ, are we that light right now that we're starting Elliott AND Milner?

Should be fine though.

I know you like to see positivity in everything but no other Team has injuries like this.

It’s concerning.

No other team played the amount of games we played last season, that's not being positive it's stating a fact. Then we have starting the season earlier than usual to fit in a stupid World Cup half way through. There was always a chance that we'd be affected in someway especially with a ruddy far east tour as well.

If Konate is out for any meaningful length of time we must buy a CB this window. It's farcical - we can never count on Matip and Gomez. Not only are they injury prone, they seem to have this incredible knack of getting injured or picking up knocks right when we'd actually need to use them (but can stay fit when they're out the side, seemingly). Not to mention that Gomez is our only proper back up for Trent (and no, I'm not counting Milner who is apparently now one of our first choice midfielders...).

That line-up is a pretty damning indictment on Naby Keita's place in the squad.
