“first day back at school and the new kecks look boss”
« on: August 10, 2006, 12:25:25 am »
Liverpool returned to school after the summer holidays today with some new pupils sporting boss new kecks that were much admired, despite the unusual width, but after a busy morning the greedy little minds of a few started to think about some nice greasy spam fritters and chips, and Boccoli sneaked past the dinner ladies to strike a blow for the nasty old greens. Order was quickly restored in class as bad boy Bellamy shoved star pupil Gerrard out of the way to answer his first difficult question of the year. Are you going to score twenty goals this season? Correct. Only another nineteen to go. Not bad considering he wears Doctor Marten’s Doctor Marten’s Doctor Marten’s boots.

Lunch must have seen too many spam fritters consumed as energy levels seemed to wane. New boy Pennant had enjoyed his morning, his flares having been every bit as wide and entertaining as anticipated and now everyone will want a pair. Yet after lunch he seemed to get a little frustrated and quietened down a bit. Sissoko had been as lively as ever but did some good work despite his desk being too small for him. He made sure that Boccoli would not be returning to Anfield in a hurry, the horrible green thing leaving the field in florets to a chorus of boos. As hometime drew near, star pupil Gerrard, having been moved from classroom to classroom, started to look irritated and was sent home early. Minutes later, very late arrival Gonzalez, another of the new boys resplendent in flares, answered a very important question indeed and then shortly afterwards the bell went. It hadn’t been quite the first day they’d hoped for, with the field trip to Ukraine or Cyprus coming up. Headmaster Benitez looked sternly on, enquiring of his deputy, Ayestaran, why they hadn’t thought of letting the lads wear Bellamy bottoms and DMs before. They really looked quite boss indeed.

First day back reports:

Reina - could he have done better with the first one? er? nitpicking? hmmm ... smart save late on though saved a 2-2er (I think the shot was going in?) and a much trickier away leg.

Finnan - got up and down to support Pennant well in the first half, sat back more second half, possibly due to lacking match fitness yet.

Carragher - “La Pared”, nuff said.

Hyypia - got dragged out by his opponent leaving room for Boccoli to run through, not really his fault.

Riise - a repeat of the Cup Final for Riise, got run ragged a bit. To be fair the Congolese winger was sharp first half but Riise looked half a yard short of sharpness, mentally as much as physically, getting done several times by switching off for a split second.

Pennant - a purring Mercedes in the first half, I love the way the ball just sticks to his foot when he receives it, oozes quality. Didn’t thrash loads of crosses over until Crouch came on, often picks a square pass to the edge of the box for someone to run onto. One or two dragbacks nearly left opponents on their arses as he span away past them. Might sound whingey but I just felt he allowed himself to drift out of the game a bit second half, like to have seen him demand the ball a bit more. Does need to learn to drive into the box to get on the end of things coming over from the left as well. Rafa will drum this into him. Cracking start though.

Alonso - another Cup Final replay, Xabi didn’t look fit first half to me, getting caught on his heels a few times, one of them leading to him losing his runner who sneaked past his striker, who blocked off Hyypia, to score. Strangely seemed to look fitter in the second half. Perhaps he’d been on the rowing machine at halftime. Below par from Xabi, he started the season slowly last year and we can’t afford for him to take a month or two to get into gear.

Sissoko - another player who was excellent in the first half but faded a little with the team in the second half. Probably too much to expect them to sustain that effort for ninety minutes at the moment. As often happens, half-time seemed to disrupt our rhythm and we didn’t really manage to get it back again. What I particularly liked about Mo’s performance was the way for such a big lanky lad he managed to operate well with a couple of players on him, spinning into them and then away again and releasing the ball for someone else. Late strike was deflected over. Improving. Opposition managers wouldn’t like to read that, would they Iain.

Gerrard - looked on fire first half with some sublime touches without even looking to see where players were, the ball went to them anyway, off instep, heel, whatever. Drifted out of the game second half, especially when moved left side, where he went into Beckham-in-England-mode, failing to stay where he was put. Not a crime when you’re going forward, it is when you’re on the defensive and you’re nowhere near your man. Possibly this was the reason Rafa took him off, to restore some shape to a disintegrating unit. He’ll never admit it of course. It was tiredness. But we know the score, us.

Zenden - funny player Zenden, he seems to click with some players, like Warnock, but not others, possibly including Riise. Somehow one doesn’t seem to be able to read what the other is going to do and Zenden looked like a player who was playing “out of synch”, the sort of trouble that Cheyrou used to have, in the right place two seconds earlier or two seconds later, but not when you need him to be there. Probably just needs time to work an understanding. Has to be said though, well it doesn’t but I will anyway, I usually have the feeling when Zenden plays that nothing is going to happen. We’re solid with him on the left but we seem to lack penetration. Will probably play central quite a lot so maybe not much to worry about. Hopefully.

Bellamy - possibly struggled a little bit to get in the game, a few flicked passes didn’t come off and might have been better held, but sod it, he scored, he’s bullish, play him forty games and he’ll score us our twenty goals, no doubt about that in my mind. There, I’ve said it so it will come to pass.

subs :

Garcia - lively, hit and miss as usual, I’ll take the misses just for the hits.

Crouch - power, Peter, power. Head the ball, don’t let the ball head you. Pretty please.

Gonzalez - can’t remember being so excited about a player I’d never seen play, I’ve probably single-handedly created all the unjustifiable hysteria over him. Well, in my house at least. Now I have seen him play. Get in there, son!

Must admit the new strip had me thinking of the late 80's kits when we always won the league, other than that.....

I thought Finnan was not so great tonight. Bellas made a few runs down the channel but Finnan looked inside. Bellas looked frustrated but the understanding will come. Finnan also made some deep runs but then failed to make the necessary recovery run to get back into position. Had we lost a goal while he was WALKING back to his position it would have cost us dearly.
On the whole the school inspectors have reserved judgement on this new school. There is a special exam on Sunday followed by two trips. Should these be successful the school can look forwards to a bright future.

Some new pupils are still needed though...

Came to this thread a bit late, but from what I've read, the real relationship trouble is not between you and your girl, but between you and a small box of Tampax. Some new pupils are still needed though...

dunno bout that, maybe another striker to make up the numbers

not much of a result tonight, at all, and I'd no doubt be sabre-rattling if we had got that same result under Houllier, yet I can't help feeling a very strong undercurrent of optimism about the season ahead, more so than for a long long time

I feel we are much stronger than the side/squad that won in Istanbul, and I'm pleased with this summer's transfer dealings...I'm glad to see the back, permanently or not, of Kirkland, Traore, Morientes and above all Cisse...the only slight twinge of disappointment is Hamann going, I think he could have had another season in him, his old head has been invaluable to us, as recently as Cardiff where he bossed extra-time...

as for the ins, I was very pleased with Bellamy and Pennant tonight, sure there's plenty more where that came from...same with Gonzalez...could be 10 goals in him...only 9 to go...Fabio Aurelio's an unknown quantity but can't really go wrong with a quality bozzie...Paletta I haven't seen so will reserve judgment but anyway we needed cover at CB...

it's very easy, too easy perhaps, to micro-analyse faults and weaknesses in the squad, you can destroy many players' games in a few sentences, even those as good as Alonso (too slow, doesn't score enough, sits too deep etc etc), but I honestly think we have the quality and mentality to bring home a major trophy this season...it almost then boils down to the whims of the football gods...they've looked out for us before...

i was actually quite suprised why rafa only played a single striker..i felt if he had used gerrard in the middle and played with 2 forwards we'll win even bigger...lack of penetration up front ...we only had penetration after the opposition was tired....the community shield willbe interesting....with performance like that it'll be quite difficult for us but knowing rafa he knows what he is doing.

Personally, though I agree Pennant seemed to flag a little at the beginning of t'second half, I thought he picked up again in the last 15-20 minutes.

Agree with the Zenden issue; never really rated him and hopefully when he moves central I'll be able to rave about him.

For me, there didn't seem to be the zip about the game, everything seems quite torpid and lacklustre.  The ref was quite poor, particularly when their players seemed to be diving and feigning injury a lot (which I didn't think Israeli teams were known for).

Perhaps there was a nervousness about us, given that we really didn't want to lose the match.  Certainly Boccoli's goal seemed to jumpstart things.

Being the school bully I was all set to pick on the new kids last night.
But with possibly the exception of Sissoko and carra (always), they were the three best players on the field last night in terms of getting the job done.

You just know Pennant is there to put in crosses week after week and nothing else, and he did it well, with some skill.
Bellamy's remit is to score and nothing else, even if it involves pushing the captain out of the way.
And as for the new boy Gonzales, well he must have the best goals per minutes played ratio of any player in liverpools history...

Having said that I thought pennant was excellent given it was first competitive game, am really looking forward to seeing him improve.  Bellamy was a little of the pace but proved he has the killer instinct when needed, shoved gerrard out of the way and scored where most would have skied over, difficult ball to hit made look easy.

Would have been happy with 3-1 but not too bad.

I'd say first of allwhat a great post
writing a quick report in a different way was dead funny to read

After that - we really looked at times like this was aour first serious game so a win is great really against a side who were no pushovers.  Well they were pushovers in one sense but you get me drift

Haifa got a lot of success withbreaking midfielders bombing forward and that's something to wake up about come the second leg.

By then though we will be more match fit and ready for those flicks and runs to work more.  Gerrard made some great runs in the first half but was often unseen when clearly unmarked

As always with a Reds side though we can certainly score over there that's for sure and i's be confident of going though - again winning the match by an odd goal.

Excellent work - very nicely written and good use of adjectives , perhaps a wee bit too much slang but used appropriately so I won't mark you down for that. Well done for handing it in ahead of schedule too - especially since you were obviously out last night .
Remind me to suggest a career in journalism at the next parents evening - we could give the Echo a ring and see if you can do your 2 weeks work experience there.

I'm gettin puzzled to be honest by some of the thread movement goin on at the moment.

A well thought out, well written post match report moved from LFC Forum to Opinion. Fair enough, its his opinion rather than undisputable fact.

so 100 players who shook the kop.... opinion or LFC fact
best ever anfield atmosphere...... opinion or LFC fact

all seems rather strange to me!!

Love the originality.

In fact, come to think of it, with your article and also Paul Tomkin's one, it really is great to see the return of proper match reports.

Let's hope it continues throughout the season  :scarf

I think we were very lopsided towards the right, i know Zenden and Gerrard dont give natural width, but I think we gave the ball to pennant almost too much, to the point where they knew what to expect.

I think that's probably because our left side was so poor for most of the game.  I don't want to pick on Zenden too much, with the injury he had last year, but both he and Riise looked off the pace to me.

Think that would change when gonzalez breaks in and there is a player stuck to each line, then we might very well scare the shit out of opposition full backs.

I agree.  I know a lot of people rate Riise, and I think he played well in 2004/5, but he's much too inconsistent for my liking, and with no pace and no dribbling skill he relies on barging through players.  I'm not faulting his effort, I'm just not sure he's good enough for us.  If he can stay fit long enough, I'd like to see Aurelio playing behind Gonzales on the left.

Yupp, great read.

But am I the only one who thinks that a new striker should not be top priority? In several games last year it looked like Hyypia is starting to feel the pace. He´s been fantastic (to understate), but everybody grows older. Agger on the other hand is a good prospect for the future, but is still good for a couple of howlers per game.

I´d say we should look for a new mate to Carra instead.

OK yes I have heard good reports on Palletta, but is he the tested article? Agger was good on Sunday I admit, but it was the first time he had played a game that was almost, if not entirely spotless.

Anyway, in Bellamy we seem to have found the box player we´ve needed for so long.
