So basically Dean blew for the foul, then the VAR gobshites decided it was inside the box.

So there's a clear disconnect between the ref and the VAR officials. You can't have one of them deciding one aspect and the others deciding the other. I think Dean only gives the foul becuase he reckons it was outside the box.

Yeah so essentially the ball could hit you on the arse on the 18 yard line, the referee could give a free kick against you for handball and then VAR can check it and say it’s in the area so penalty for handball even though it never went near a hand

It's something the pair of them will have to learn to cope with in the coming weeks though. I think both will improve but there are going to be rocky moments until then.
