Nine of the 21 players Rennes have used so far are 22 or under. Such inexperience inevitably provokes peaks and troughs of form, but there was enough maturity in their impressive 0-0 draw away to champions Marseille on Wednesday night to suggest they will beat struggling Monaco this weekend.
Tipped pre-season to be top-six contenders, Monaco arrive in Brittany in a mess. They have won just one of 11 league games since the end of August amid familiar claims that the players lack mental strength (a long-term problem for the club from an area where football is an afterthought).
Last weekend's 1-1 home draw against fellow strugglers Nice summed up Monaco's shortcomings: despite having an extra man following the 26th-minute expulsion of Nice's Drissa Diakite, the Principality hosts laboured until taking a 76th-minute lead from the penalty spot, and then allowed Nice to equalise five minutes from time.
"It's important to build on this point by winning on Saturday," said Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti after his team's excellent midweek point at Marseille. Carrying confidence into the gane, they should get all three points. Back Rennes at 1.78.
