Apologies if already posted - saw it on a friend's Facebook wall and recognised the exact location! It was thinking about the bus route of the #4 that did it for me. Although I'm sure by the time I was riding that route, it had changed!

Bingo. Threw me too. Could swear it went up the hill behind Penny Lane shelter towards King David....not down Allerton Rd.....

Looks like it could be a wedding and it's taken at the bottom of the steps leading up to a church.

Probably not that, just flower sellers and a customer on closer inspection.

That shop behind Habit Makers, I assume must be a reference to Nuns apparel and not to drug dealing? :)

So was Clayton square perhaps named after the Clayton brothers whose shop is in the background?

I don't think so G, they were a quite a big deal the Claytons and I think that square was called Clayton the best part of a hundred years before that pic.

The entire pic blew my head to be honest Gulley, it's amazing. The cobblestones, the shop advertisements, the womens dresses, the boy - where are his family now, and yep the detail in a friggin lamppost mesmerised me.

But I'm not sure what you mean there mate, what are you seeing?

But I'm not sure what you mean there mate, what are you seeing?

Although it's not easy to make it out, if you look at the edited attachment I posted up above, in the orange circle there is a side view of a small liverbird with wings outstretched looking over to the right hand side and perched just above a representation of a nest.

What gets me in a lot of these old photos is that sort of little attention to detail and pride for our city that some of our civic forefathers had back then which seems somewhat lacking these days.

To think someone must have commissioned a foundry to manufacture them with that specific detail on uniquely marking them out as belonging to the city, rather than the sort of anonymous off the shelf things the council would probably get these days.

I suppose it's down to money, though I can't help but think so many of those old cast iron lamp posts would still be perfectly servicable today if they hadn't been torn down and sold off for scrap in the pursuit of urban modernisation or regeneration or whatever words they dress up a lot of cultural vandalism as these days.

It's like the details in the old photo below of the tram stop outside the Adelphi with liverbird finials on the roof on the Liverpool Picturebook site here that was posted here about 10 years ago.

I wonder did anyone have the foresight when that was torn down to save them rather than throwing them in a skip.

Judging from the relative size of them to the people waiting below, they must have been maybe 45-50cm tall.

I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

Last time I was in Ludo, the locals said there were plans to resurrect the ferry service to the pier there. Nice idea that. I'd do it.......at the drop of a hat ;)

It's worrying, this passing of time thing, and it seems to be speeding up the older you get.

And it must be almost 9 years now since Shanklyboy (Ray) passed away too. I remember having quite a few good conversations with him on here and in this thread back then. He's much missed.

Gutted to hear of the passing of Nick when I’ve logged on this evening  a brilliant contributor all over this site but loved his stuff on here , will be able to continue them conversations with Ray now ....RIP Nick Gulleysucker

Was in the Dale Street area yesterday, and I know it sounds daft but it looks naked without the flyovers.  I actually miss them.  As a kid, there was nothing quite like bombing along them on the top deck of a bus. :(

I was delivering to Tesco during lockdown, were they gone then or still partly up? I was on Grt Crosshall street and I thought I saw them still there. Same as you I loved going down them on the bus and even drove down them after I passed my test.

It's still there. It's used as a homeless charity now, I think. But  still there.

Look at  the pic. Now imagine the Grapes on Lime St, out of shot, to your left. Your  back facing on to the side of the Adelphi Hotel. And Reileys snooker hall, just off shot, on the opposite corner to your right. Bingo!

The photographer would now be standing in the taxi rank at the bottom of Copperas Hill, with I think it's Bolton Street, to the right.

The premises are still there now.

As soon as I saw that photo I thought I recognised the building because I used to work in there. I just checked it out, and I was correct.

I also came across this old video of it too.

They're completely gone. The Dale Street end has been run behind Old Haymarket.

When were they actually demolished? I'd delivered to the Tesco at the bottom of the office block on Gt Crosshall, end of March/Early April and noticed the on ramp to the flyover was closed off. I was intending to go up Hunter Street, but it was blocked off so I had to turn left and I was that busy checking where I was going I didn't get a chance to look and see.

Notice that the charity provides care to 'Delicate children'.

Growing up in the 50s and 60s when large families were the norm an 'only child' was an oddity, a 'delicate child' even more so and quite often an only child was also delicate as well.

On the odd occasion they were allowed to play out you'd be told to be 'nice' to them and if you were playing football in the street not to tackle them and let them score. Needless to say you may as well have printed a target on their back.

I passed my test in 1971 which immediately entitled me to drive a green 10cwt Commer Corpy van down the flyover to our base off Truman Street behind Whitbread's with the office lunchtime chippy order.

A few railway ones..Crown st tunnel, the oldest passenger railway tunnel in the world.

A few others..

Mossley Hill..

Kirkdale with those steep steps down & Rifkins scrappy to the left.

This did surprise me..

Back of the Strand in Bootle, the tunnel now used for pedestrian access towards the Asda..just doesn't seem right at all.
