Right, tragi-disco.

Sally Shapiro. Perfect Sunday night melancholy. Her first album, Disco Romance - perfect title - is a stunner. As are the remixes. The second's not half bad either. Really, get them all. Songs for summer's past.

Enjoy. Remember, through the tears, those lights look all smudged and magical.

'no blacks, no jews and no gays'

i'd never paid attention to the lyrics before - is this a wind up?
Not a wind up, just a 1979 NYC-style sideswipe at racism and homophobia. Social commentary & disco - who'd have thought it eh. Did cause controversy when it came out though.

ah - that line punched out when i was reading it last night but i was blearing through the tears of saturdays performance and the general suicidal tone of some of the main forums.

i think there's an ashley beedle mix of this that is worth a listen so i will have a dig in the youtube crates of my mind and see what i can find.

casseil those sally shapiro records are wonderfully haunting do you know if there's any other mixes out there?

tensnake are so hot right now but they take things in such a house based direction that it can sometimes lose a bit of the disco drama.

here's a rarity.

the full disco mix of supertramp's cannonball.  it could be a frankie knuckle's record from the 90s with the driving piano line but let it play.

very special this is a huge celebration of a record.

this is on a falco tip.  if you've never listened to the b-side of his amadeus track you haven't lived and actually i think i will post it next but this is deliciously weird from some dude wearing a kilt but sounding a little left of centre.  i absolutely love it.

indeed here it is from the austrian mentalist.  on the b side to his global mega-hit 'come and rock me amadeus' he sneaked on this hommage to smoking weed.  hard to believe he got away with it but when i dig out some of the cherry red back catalogue this is just the tip of the narcotic iceberg.  absolutely massive bassline pressure.

Both her albums, Disco Romance and My Guilty Pleasure, have been issued in remix form, with loads of different producers - CFCF, Junior Boys, FM Attack, Lovelock to name just a few. Had I been able to find it, I would have posted one of Lindstrom's remixes. His reworking of He Keeps Me Alive is beautiful.

Hang on - found it.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/rjl7pqmH2Vo?" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/rjl7pqmH2Vo?</a>

I take what you mean about tensnake - a bit too muscular.

The original of I'll Be By Your Side takes some beating, though the sound on this is a bit muffled.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/7CUxtNNTfvw?" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/7CUxtNNTfvw?</a>

FM Attack does a great job with this one though.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/CQVifHu39fo?" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/CQVifHu39fo?</a>

Love the Falco stuff too. They don't make him or 'em like that anymore.

on a percussive tip and big with mega-don dj harvey

Agboju Logun | Shina Williams & His African Percussionists

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfGqa382TVs

Awesome Nigerian afro-disco by Shina Williams and his African Percussionists. Agboju Logun is a song about the proverbial prodigal child relying on his inheritance for survival. (from Nigerian Square.com) This is an extraction from the Yoruba proverb Agboju logun fun ra re fun ya je which means the lazy Child that intends to rely on his inheritance to survive will inevitably suffer in the end.

Johnny Marr from the Smiths accompanied Chic which was special. Simian Mobile Disco, Justin Robertson. Chic were that good, everything else was disappointing in comparison. Not that they were bad, just that Chic were simply that good. One of the best live acts I think I'll ever see.

These carry a bit of weight;

not without their merits but neither take me on a journey or individually rock my world.

don't mean to criticise big man but i'm generally looking for something that sounds like it might make drugs sound better.

i realise that's a narrow perspective but why would you go to bat for these two?

nothing wrong with the 80s - if larry levan could have played it or indeed if harvey wants to play it now i'd call it disco.

here's some day three balearic cover version weirdness from the mind blowing flying lizards.

The Flying Lizards - Move on up

afternoon keta-weird and a contender for top ten best cover version ever.

I just think the former is a movement inducing tune. The later, I just find the content brilliant, basically absolving her husband of any blame in his  misdeeds.

mega-banger.  there's a house version of this that i will try and dig out for the relevant thread.

meanwhile i've been enjoying some balearic silliness to help me cope with a catastrophic hangover.

how do you make an obscure italian nonsense rhyming spanglish record even better?

you get cheeky cockney mike read to do his own made up rubbish version.

absolutely superb i'm posting a link to the original as well.

EDIT: Yes, before someone says it, I know before house their was disco.

i promise.

i was actually anti-disco and anti-everything after my house music year zero in 1988.  that proved to be a naive perspective though i don't regret it: everyone in ireland hated house and when i brought it back from london they were dismissing it as 'that faggot shit' including a certain david holmes who was firmly stuck in a rare groove rut at the time.  i was all about looking forwards but as i got deeper into the music its inevitable that you realise that some of my favourite house records where just big fat steals from the best disco records of all time.  give 'love thang' a spin and see how many different classic house records are straight rips from different parts of the mother track.

another factor is getting older.  i'm 42 in a couple of weeks and my ability and thirst for going raving is greatly diminished.  as i've got older i've also got more interested in the after parties which run in the daytime and are therefore more dad friendly.  they're also more musically interesting than hearing djs play big saturday night records they were bored of weeks before the main room at fabric is getting to hear them.

that's lead me into some weird disco and balearic nooks and crannies so i hope this thread will throw up the odd nugget that captures your attention.  its going to be a little more ad hoc until the thread finds its voice.  there will be some obvious classics going up here but my taste is for the odd and eccentric.  records about drugs and sex are always a good place to start and hopefully over time we can build up a little hive of poolside secret weapons from some of my most tasteful friends record bags.

just don't tell them that i'm sneaking them up on RAWK ;D
