Any chance we can, for today at least, change the title of this thread? It's a bastard disease and there will be time for tears later but today cancer does not define Sven Goran Eriksson.

Wonderful gesture.

Always had a soft spot for Sven because of his exploits with Sampdoria.

Timing is everything isn't it. We probably weren't in a position to  offer him the managers in the late 90s when Houllier became sole manager. Sven's profile was high at that time due to the success he had up to that point. Landed the job with a club that had one of the best squads in Europe at the time and by the time the Liverpool job came again he was England manager and his stock had fallen somewhat.

Why didn't we go for him after Kenny in the early 90s though. Ah no point going there I suppose

He did have that pre-season over in Thailand after the takeover was complete and he knew that they'd sack him and look for someone else.
He was at a hotel poolside early one morning, bottle of champagne just opened and he called Didi over to join him.

From what I recall he was getting paid loads by different teams for being dismissed and being in a job at same time

celebrating life indeed

The city fans loved him, said many a time I was at the 2007-8 game, City was the last home game, they sang his name the WHOLE match, no exaggeration, they never stopped

2007/8, was the year before their current owners came in

They started well but ended up 9th, famously lost 8-1 to Middlesbrough on the last day. To be fair they did the double over man united, who won the league and european cup that year.

Think we drew 0-0 away with them between Christmas and New Year. Watched in Amsterdam. :D

It was when they had that ex Thai PM in charge wasn’t it? And they had started to make some interesting signings like Martin Petrovic, Elano and some other Brazilian too I think, but they struggled for goals a bit.

If I remember correctly they knew that if they got through the Boro game without picking up any further bookings/red cards after Richard Dunne was sent off early that they would get the fair play spot (ironic given what followed!) that used to grant entry into the UEFA Cup. This led to the bizarre spectacle of them trying to play the game without putting in any tackles or challenging for the ball with inevitable consequences for the scoreline!

Yeah Bianchi scored on  his debut and then just disappeared, from what I recall Bojinov was injured on his debut and out for about a year, his first game back he wrecked his knee and was out ages again. No luck.

Elano used to be great until october each season, then when the weather turned he would vanish until about April and then suddenly reappear again, thats how it seemed anyway.

Also Michael Johnson the midfielder, think Benitez was a big admirer and was rumoured to have bid 10m, unfortunately he got a few injuries and then balooned in weight, retired at about 25, he hadnt kicked a ball in years at that point, a photo surfaced of him in a chippy looking very bloated and about a week later City announced he wasnt under contract any more. I think he had been man of the match in a manchester derby.

wasnt it Michael Johnson who missed a game because he lied that it was his nans funeral? Or was that Stephen Ireland? All sorts going on for them at that time ;D

Haha I always rated Benjani! I'm sure the Premier League was better back then, other than having to watch United win all the time. Bring back the days of man city having Darius Vassell and Georgios Samaras in the squad.

Stephen Ireland - bizarre situation in which his girlfriend apparently communicated that his grandmother had died, to avoid communicating news of a miscarriage...only for it to come out that his grandmother was actually alive, after which he attempted to clarify that it was his other grandmother, also alive, and then the elderly partner of his grandfather. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2007/sep/15/newsstory.sport4

Michael Johnson was actually really hotly tipped to go on and become the next great English midfielder (he's only 36 now) but his career fell apart due to injuries and significant mental health problems. His story reminds me a little of Sebastian Deisler actually, on reflection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Johnson_(footballer,_born_1988)

Haha I always rated Benjani! I'm sure the Premier League was better back then, other than having to watch United win all the time. Bring back the days of man city having Darius Vassell and Georgios Samaras in the squad.

I think in one of their seasons under Pearce they scored something like 10 goals at home all season.

Found it! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006–07_Manchester_City_F.C._season

19 home games, scored 10, conceded 16. 26 goals all season at the Etihad or whatever it was called before that. How much per goal for Season Ticket holders?!
