Would love to live over there in the near future. Either New York or Miami.

make sure you make loads of money then ;) New York is so gentrified these days. Living out in Jamaica, Queens doesn't have quite the same appeal!

Best place to visit = NYC

Best place to live = Chicago IL.  So so much to offer and is a much cleaner, friendlier city.  The lake and the beach give it that little bit extra.

Agree completely. We have family who lived in Chicago for a while and I loved it when we visited them. Its a really nice city to live in and much better if you have a family rather than New York.

I'd say that Chicago is the best place to visit as well.

I love New York and never thought I'd love a city as much, but Chicago is that city. It's a wonderful place. Def. a more 'good looking' city than New York as it where :D The down town areas and N Michigan, the parks, the lakeside and river, the beaches are positively sparkling - don't think I've seen a city that seems to have city workers constantly cleaning and tidying. And the sky line is second to NONE in the US.

But also, it has the diversity that New York has with interesting and more 'lived in' neighborhoods close by, such as Wicker Park, Bucktown, Pilsen etc etc.

Also, Chicago is a more sports mad city than New York, maybe cos it's more compact and all their teams play in Chicago. Whereas in NYC where 2 of the teams don't even play in the same state, and all but 2 are spread out.

I was in Chicago couple weeks ago, and I've never seen so many fans of one team (the Cubs), about a city, the place was just full of 'em, everywhere you turned - people in Cubs get-up. It was great.

You need to go to Boston then;  Red Sox fanatics everywhere.

I see.  Thought when you said "I was in Chicago a couple weeks ago"  you were speaking from a tourist's perspective and not a die hard Cubs fan.  When I was visiting Boston, did run into a Cubs fan who was considering moving to Boston permanently, so yeah stranger things are known to happen :P

Anyway, back to the love of the Big Apple.

I ain't a die hard by any means. die hard for New York Rangers yep, baseball, not so much! But I go see the Cubbies when I am in Chicago during b-ball season. Wrigley Field is a great place to go to!  One day I'll visit Boston, but I better leave a bit of a gap, as I know it'll never come close to Chicago and NYC, plus I can safely say I can't stick their sports teams :D

I love Chi-city too! The Magnificent Mile, the beach, the Pier, everything! There is a very high chance that I may settle there after I get done with uni, since it is pretty close to mine. And most recruiting companies are from Chicago, so I'm really hopeful that I get a job there.

Nice to see Chicago getting some love here.  I just moved to NYC after living in Chicago most my life.  I moved mostly because I like NYC's diversity.  Chicago is plenty diverse, but like Boston is one of the most segregated cities in the US.  Chicago was getting overwhelmed by people from the surrounding areas.  All the old hoods were being gentrified with recent grads of big state schools, so you get that drunk frat element all over the city (Go Cubbies!).  It's getting too homogenized.  The the city takes notice and builds a better school and adds policing to attract buyers to the area which forces the artists and ethnic groups out, and soon enough the neighborhood flavor is gone...  It happened in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, with Logan Sq. and Pilsen fighting to hang on.

Not to mention Daley is going overboard with this 2016 Olympics campaign.  The city is getting near fascistic in the parking tickets to collect revenue.

Spent about 10 days in NYC..fantastic place! Looking to go again next year perhaps.

Theres always the typical tourist things ie Statue of Liberty, Empire State/Rockafella, but there are a few other things I managed to do.

Spent some time in Flushing Meadows, (the tennis goes on there at appropriate times) but they got a great lake there with fanastic opportunies for rowing and stuff like that. We took out a boat, $20 for an hour which could fit 5 - 6 people! We ended up hiring 2 boats for $40 and had our own "oxford cambridge" boat race. Brilliant value.

Also, if you have time on your hands, Atlantic City is available! Casinos galore! The Burghetta and Trumps Taj Mahal to name a few. Not quite Las  Vegas but certaintly worth seeing if you can do the journey (2 hour drive? only downside). However, Philadelphia is nearby and its worth going down just to see where "rocky" climbed!

And Times Square at night time, is just amazing. The M & M store catched my imagination, with all the possible colours that man can think of being used as M & M's.

A good few beaches as well! Theres one in Coney Island (with an acquarium and rollercoasters and rides as well). There is also Sunken Meadows Beach and Jones Beach which was packeddd on the 4th July fireworks night.

Just a fantastic place. And the girlssss lovee the British accent. oo yerrrrr!!

Been there twice and im going back in September. They've got some good clubs and nice venues for bands, really easy to enjoy your night out there. Good shopping for your missus, just leave her on Macys and let her have a blast while your enjoying yourself elsewhere.

However the gentrification of NYC is sad to see, and in that aspect Chicago is much better. I'm loving both NYC and Chicago though and im defo going back to Chicago asap.

Yeah but in NY we're talking on a much larger scale.  Chicago is at best 1/3 of the population of the NY/NJ area and nowhere near as integrated.

Don't know about all that - I grew up in Chicago but have spent the last 25 years in NYC.  Chicago's changed a lot in that time but am not sure if it's really "friendlier" (it certainly wasn't back then depending on the neighborhood and what you looked like) - just different.

As much as I practically want to kill someone every single day I'm here in New York, I can't imagine living back in Chi-town.  The Midwestern mindset is just different and I say that as one who once had it; not saying it as a negative - again, it's just different.

Btw, we do have beaches here as well....   8)  The Atlantic Ocean an easy train ride away!   Lake Michigan is gorgeous but come on!  As well a number of other bodies of water all around.

I'll definitely give you the clean bit though....   :D

The people of Liverpool are workers. This is not a rich town where everyone lives a comfortable life. They work hard for themselves, and this is what we at Liverpool like to do. This is the attitude we must all have.

Spot on there Connie.  This is what I love about Chicago though, not as cool as New York, but doesn't have to live up to the hype of being New York.  Chicago knows it runs the Midwest and is the Second City, but it's happy that way.  Kinda like Dirk Kuyt as a RW.  He's not as flashy, and a little ugly, but he works hard and gets the job done  ;)

Chicago is easier living.  You can get some space for decent price and have a car.

Loving NYC so far.  Just moved in last week to Inwood.  No footie pubs this far up from what I can gather, so it looks like I'll be getting setanta online.  Anyone have info on footie pubs up this way?

I dunno what it is about Chicago.  I'm from Ireland and I've been to NYC 3 times but I lived in Chicago for nearly a year back in 2002, and have just returned from a weeks holiday there.

I lived around Wrigley Field and, to be fair, there is a huge Irish community in that area of town which made settling in so much easier.  However, the city seems so comfortable in it's own skin whereas NYC, as another poster stated, has to live up to the hype.  People continually talk about NYC and sometimes I think that when people visit they aren't as taken with it as they thought they would be.  This is what happened to my wife, who had never been, when we went there for our honeymoon.  She was far more taken by Chicago.

Brian Reade - "Rafa Benitez was many things at Liverpool but unlike every manager since Kenny Dalglish, he was not a failure. Indeed a majority of Liverpudlians will remember him as a legend. eric - you are just going to have to find the train schedule for 11th street!

connie - there are at least 3 clean blocks in new york city.

i was lucky enough to travel around the US last summer and Chicago is definitly a very good city.  wrigleyville did seem like a great area but chicago's deep dish pizza still doesn't compare to new york style.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I am pretty much a "Noo Yawkah" at this point but there is *no* way the pizza is better here:  Chicago wins that battle hands down!  Better BBQ as well (or certainly used to anyway).

And White Sox fan here - enough with all that Cubs talk up there.   South Side rules!!

Its the easiest major city in the world to get around in. People come from places like Bangladesh and within a month they're driving taxis in Manhattan!
