Comparison web sites really work, I've just got a quote for nearly 50% less than my current provider.
So they can go Direct to the Mersey and fucking jump in.

Just been on compare the market, £962 for my first year, I've heard worse for a first car but still seems pretty expensive, do I need comprehensive, third party and fire or third party? So complicated.
What car is that for mate? Are there any other drivers on there?

I did a credit check (compulsory at work) and the bloody meerkats leave about 10 imprints on it when you search. Worth considering if you want a loan/mortgage in the next few months.

Were you with Direct Line before then? (From your "Direct to the Mersey" comment.) If so that doesn't surprise me. They've been cheapest for me this past 2 years as a relatively inexperienced driver, but I know my parents just accepted their renewal every year for about 4 years until one year they decided to have a look around and saved about £500 between them. I also found last time I renewed it was cheaper to cancel my policy and take out a brand new one but still with DL. They also got the number of my NCB wrong on my renewal notice. Like I said, they were still cheaper for me last year, but they won't be this year so I'll be having a scout around the comparison sites myself towards the end of August.

Depends on what level of cover you want.

Third party only is the lowest level so if you were in an accident that's your fault, your insurance would only cover the cost of damage to the other vehicle(s), not yours. There may also be other restrictions, depending on the T&Cs, like they'll only cover damage to the other car and not contents/personal injury.

Third party, fire and theft is as above plus cover if your car is damaged by fire or stolen.

Comprehensive covers all of the above plus the damage to your own vehicle/you if you're in an accident.

Windscreen repairs are also more likely to be free if you're "fully comp" (comprehensive cover) but you'll probably have to pay for them on any other type of cover.

Naturally, third party or third party, fire and theft will be cheaper as the insurance company is open to a lower financial liability if you have an accident. However, whilst the premium will be lower, if you have an accident and write your car off, you'll have to foot the entire bill yourself, so it could get very expensive!

It might also depend on your age because some companies will only cover drivers of a certain age for third party and some will only do comprehensive cover.

Are there any other drivers on there? Even adding Debs and myself to most cars with 11 NCB we are looking at over £900 for a 1.3 KA or more for Fiestas, Clios, Picantos etc etc

Had a renewal quote for our crappy 2nd car, an S reg Ford Mondeo 1.8. with Dial Direct, just my wife and I drive it, really low miles per year and renewal quote was £240 TPFT. Also just had through the post a '£50 Cashback' offer with Lloyds (our bank) if we get a quote through them and then take out the insurance. Turns out, Lloyds can do the same insurance policy for £196 per year and after 3 months into the policy, they will send us a chq for £50. Not bad!

Just to let you know that Lloyds have this offer on until 31st Dec 2012. :wave

I haven't passed my test yet, got it booked later this month but if/when I pass my insurance will be so high I probably won't be driving anyway for a long time. Just checking on insurance sites for a gauge of how much it would be, the cheapest I got for a 2004 Fiesta was over £5000.

The insurance is actually worth double the amount than the car itself.

Finally be on the road at midnight on Friday after 6 months or so. Only on my Dads Caddy van, but at least I'm on the road. Absolutely no chance I'll be having my own car anytime soon really but I know that. Living where I live doesn't help ( quite a bit of car crime to be fair ) but the quotes are just obscene. One particular insurer wanted just shy of 14 grand for a 2006 Corsa 1.2. With my Dad as main driver with over ten years no claims. I must be doing something wrong.

I have had fucking murders with Admiral.....were they not the cheapest I would have blown them off but they are the cheapest so I stayed....
We have been looking for a car that we could insure for Jess as she now passed her Test. They wanted anything from £377 to around £600 to add Jess onto the Fiesta for just 4 months. We have had loads of quotes for different cars as we tried to find the cheapest. We settled on a Ford Ka and got a quote to add Jess - they wanted around £500 for the remaining 4 months. When I did a new business quote they said it would be £930 for the year so I persuaded them to let me cancel my existing policy with no charge and then take out the new policy. When it came to take out the new policy, I asked them to pay by instalments and suddenly the price went up from £930 to almost £1400. I tried to query this and was told that this was correct and was the credit charge even though the credit charge was 8.5%. When I got my documents it said my policy was actually £1186 so I went mental again. It ended up with me paying for the year's premium on my credit card and I will balance transfer that and pay almost £50 a month less.

Insurance now is just daft, mine is due next month and I'm not looking around till i get my renewal, it hasn't gone down the last 2 years, just stayed the same, 25 now with 6 years no claims, on a 1.4 Civic. Hoping to be sub £500 but might be pissing in the wind. Last year i payed £250 less than i payed when i was 19 on my first car, its just mad.

Sorry, not been in here since. Yes, I've been with them for about 12 years or more when they were aggressively cheap, but over the last few years the premium has climbed and climbed and I just thought fuck them, I was actually loyal for a few years. I know 2 other people that have halved their insurance moving away from DL.

I've managed to knock nearly £400 off my DL renewal quote. I've not tried LV so far this time around but whenever I've tried them for quotes previously they have been rediculous (well over £1000) and so not bothered trying since.

I've set aside a bit of next weekend to get my insurance sorted. What fun that'll be!

i also heard that the older the car get the more it cost to insurance as the risk for the car to breakdown/thing go wrong/claim made increase.

have to try to get them to match the quote you got from the comparison sites?

i just bought a new car and when i went to both comparethemarket and gocompare, they both give me different quotes from the same insurance companies!! one site shown £600+ and the other site shown £1200+.... same details entered in both sites.  :butt

cheers

i end up just phoning my current insurance company (Tesco) and got the cheapest quote (extra £74 to my current policy for changing car, inc £15 admin fee).

i am changing from a 1.4 diesel to a 1.8 petrol, so that was a pretty good deal and that also mean i would have 2 yrs NCD at the end of the current policy expiry in March 2013 (current have 1) instead of starting a my second year all over again from now with a new policy.

Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 SXI diesel, 53 plate, £304 premium (comprehensive) last year through Swinton. No idea what the renewal quote is, but just done a comparison on GoCompare and the cheapest comes up with £181 (Wiser Choice?) or £190 incl. legal protection (Chaucer Direct). Think I'll be going with Chaucer, but I'm really surprised with all this talk of premiums going up, that our renewal quote takes off another £115!

I have a 56 plate Seat Leon 2.0 TDI. Insurance is with Admiral, 4 years NCB and it was £580 for this year. I stick both my parents and a female friend on there as named drivers which brings the cost down by around £100.

Unfortunately that could rise next year as I might have to make a claim for criminal damage at the moment. Some bellend decided to walk down our road on Saturday night with a hammer taking his frustration out on the parked cars. Mine was caught just above the driver's window. Shame he didn't hit the window to be honest, that would probably be cheaper to repair.

Not true as insurance policy covers accident damage to yours (comprehensive) or third party and doesn't cover the car for mechanical problems which is considered breakdown insurance (AA, RAC etc.)

I mean seriously, what is this shit. Looked at getting a little '04 Corsa but the quote was still like 6k. Disgraceful.

As the average price of third party, fire and theft  insurance cover exceeds £1,500 (according to figures from the AA), it’s more important than ever for motorists to find the companies that offer the most affordable policies.

Prices vary wildly, with some firms clearly making genuine efforts to provide good value for money, while others offer policies that represent appalling value.

My league table of the 20 cheapest and most expensive insurers is based on feedback from 29,000 Auto Express readers. While my top 10 offers no great surprises, the worst-value 10 includes some of the biggest, most familiar names in the car insurance world.

Kwik Fit is worst of the worst in the value rankings, although Lloyds TSB, Endsleigh and the Post Office perform almost as badly. More Than is clearly paying the price for making its policies affordable when seeking to win new customers, then hitting them with rises of as much as 50 per cent at the renewal stage.

But the biggest shock is the AA. Value for money – or lack of it – is the company’s biggest weak spot, according to Auto Express, which concludes that drivers “expect far more from a brand that is meant to be on the side of the motorist”.

The 10 cheapest insurers

1. Adelaide Insurance Services (IAM Surety)

2. Frizzell (LV Frizzell)

3. Royal and Sun Alliance

4. Ageas (previously Fortis)

5. RIAS

6. Liverpool Victoria (LV)

7. NFU Mutual

8. Saga

9. Marks & Spencer

10. Swiftcover

The 10 most expensive insurers

2. Lloyds TSB

3. Endsleigh

4. Post Office

5. Diamond

6. More Than

7. Elephant

8. Admiral

9. AA
