Discovery Channel/BBC - Planet Earth http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/planetearth/index.shtml

Absolutely breathtaking photography and just an all-round stunning series with only one failing point - the version that I got to see in the US is narrated by Sigourney Weaver rather than Sir David Attenborough. Scandalous!

Love this. Absolutely awesome! It's on Swedish television at the moment, every thursday and I keep getting stunned every time I see it. Fantastic. I also despise the fact that they have some swedish moron speaking instead of Sir David Attenborough with swedish subtitles.

He in the US we get Sigorney Weaver. Needles to say I wish it was someone else.

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders At Robin Hood Hills / Revelations: Paradise Lost 2

I've only actually seen the second one, but it reprises the first one quite a lot. They're making a third as the appeals rumble on. The most amazing miscarriage of justice, and just a hugely powerful film, complete with cast of lunies.

Quite hard going in places, especially the graphic images of one of the murdered boy's mutilated genitals, and the bite marks on his face.

Too much to explain in one forum post, but one of those cases where you can't believe the policing of the incident and the witch hunt that ensued, plus the most blatant suspect (one of the boy's stepfather) who had once threatened a kid with a knife, was known to have hit his stepson, and had his own teeth removed once the bodies were discovered. Also, of the three boys, only one had his genitals mutilated and his face bitten - i.e. the more seriously deranged and "personal" attack, and therefore the focus of the attack - and he was this guy's stepson.

I've just had this delivered, so will give it a go tomorrow. It sounds harrowing stuff but I've read a bit about the case now and it does look like there are plenty of grounds to reopen the investigation.

I'm 3/4 of the way through Shoah too, but that deserves its own thread.

Man on Wire is immense. The story of some french nutter who tight rop walks across the twin towers when they were first built. Highly recommended.

Anyone catch that " 102 Minutes that changed America " on History the other day ? ?

Tragic documentary and previous unseen footage about 9/11

And there is that other 9/11 one with the amatuer film makers who were doing a documentary
on Firemen in New York but It turned out to be focused on the attacks , they followed a rookie fireman for a few weeks
and his first proper call out turned out to be the attacks , the only footage of the first plane going into the towers aswell.

Tragic man .

Signed up to Netflix the other day (I'm just using the 1 month free trial I won't renew!) and there's quite a selection of documentary films to choose from.

I went for Zeitgeist tonight.

The first part about religion is watchable as I actually believe that.

The 2nd bit about 9/11 seems a bit crazy and far fetched.

Like I said I agreed (mostly) with the 1st bit about religion but then the 2nd and 3rd part were a bit mental!

Netflix then suggested David Icke for me because I watched Zeitgeist and boy oh boy talk about a total nutjob, couldn't watch it all though so maybe he got a bit sane towards end.

The Civil War by Ken Burns is an absolutely fantastic series documentaries about the American Civil War . Amazing photos from the era, with a varied cast of great actors giving a voice to the historical characters. The historians giving their own opinions are very entertaining as well as extremely interesting. And the music is excellent too.

I really liked The Kid Stays in the Picture, about the rise and fall of film producer Robert Evans  in his own words, during the Seventies golden era in Hollywood.

Happy People: A year in Taiga - Herzog with his brother, a lovely doc about trappers in Siberia. Apart from all the classic science, nature, war docs, Jonathan Meades three part doc on France was wonderful (much of it went over me head) http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2012/feb/01/jonathan-meades-france-tv-review. A list of his videos on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/MeadesShrine/videos?sort=dd&view=1&flow=list

Loving the Dixon and Italian chef stuff - Italy Unpacked, the Sicily one was great la dolce vita!

The Journey inside the cell (perhaps wrong title recently shown on the beeb about the journey of a virus through the body's defence mechanisms) was excellent - http://www.bbcactivevideoforlearning.com/1/TitleDetails.aspx?TitleID=24286 .
Jim al-kahlili's - Everything and Nothing. Steven Berkoff - To Infinity and Beyond - about huge numbers.

One I can't wait to watch is the - The House I live In - about America's war on drugs.

China state TV's epic doc about food in all the regions is a must watch, is on YouTube, will find the name: A Bite of China - http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2012/sep/12/bite-of-china-finest-food-tv-ever.

Ken Burns - America's greatest idea - on the US's national parks.

Enron: the smartest guys in the room. Beggars belief what these c*nts were doing.

Urbanized. Urban development/architecture documentary by Gary Hustwit.

How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster? http://www.mrfostermovie.com/ bio of architect Norman Foster.

The Genius of Photography. This is what the beeb is made for.

American: The Bill Hicks story

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace (Adam Curtis).

Touching the Void - climbing disaster in the Himalayas.

Bobby Fischer against the world. Nutter.

Cave of forgotten dreams. Herzog on the Chauvet caves in southern France "the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind".

Carl Sagans - Cosmos. Science has moved on but this beautiful series should be shown to all school kids.

Maradona by Kusturica. Emir Kusturica's Che Guevara-esque rendition on Maradona.

Lost a week in there once. Obviously it's randomly submitted content so can't really be defined as 'awesome' but plently of great ones pop up every day. Watched one the other night along the lines of 'worlds toughest jails' some American history channel's view on a Russian prison in Siberia among other places. Never going there. Some great shouts in here though.

Swimming against the tide of opinion I know, but Senna was not a great documentary. As a fan of his, I felt it showed me nothing new at all about his story and used no footage I had not seen before. Superb undoubtedly if you didn't know about him before but otherwise by the numbers imo

This is imo the best documentary about the war on drug's I've seen since The Last White Hope,it's a damning look at the failure of this so called war.

The House I Live In.

This is imo the best documentary about the war on drug's I've seen since The Last White Hope,it's a damning look at the failure of this so called war.

It's a must see film. It's available on the BBC Iplayer.I f you can't acess the Iplayer stream it from their website.

Superb documentary if incredibly depressing. Big recommend from me.

Give a man a mask and he will tell the truth, Give a man a user name and he will act like a total twat.
Its all about winning shiny things.

I can recommend this book by Christian Parenti as a companion to the documentary Alan.

It cover's the same ground as the book but also cover's other part's of the changing face of policing and the penal system in the USA.

I first read it 13 year's ago and then read it again last year and it's a very prescient book.

Exercise is to the body what reading is to the mind.

"If I hadn't doped, I would never have won". "Doping improves your performance between 5 and 7 per cent, and maybe 10 to 12 per cent when you are in a peak shape.

"Doping isn't addictive but it's an instrument of power: whoever wins attracts the money; for themselves, the team and the sponsors"

Any good IRA/Troubles documentaries?
The Wood Preservation Society. Hopefully that shed's the equivalent of Fritzel's cellar.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - about an 80 (or somewhere there) year old man who runs a sushi bar in a subway station in Japan, except that this sushi bar has been given 3 Michelin Stars and have been acclaimed widely. It's got some really beautiful mouth-watering sushi !

Marley - Documentary about Bob Marley. Other than the fact you get to hear his songs, pretty interesting to learn about the man and his personality. You can see Ziggy his son (and a spitting image of Bob), is more forgiving about the father but the daughter has some daddy issues.

Love most of John Pilger's work but his last two are worth catching.....The war on democracy and The war you don't see......Very scary about the way governments manipulate the media to suit their own needs.
