Why does he feel the urge to ruin songs with totally irrelevant piano ramblings?

Though I know of him from way back, I have to admit I'm not very familiar with Nick Cave's music, but saw him on Jools Holland and I have to say he's got one hell of a ballsy look going there  ;D

Slick back receding hair, moustache, open shirt with medallions and that half tucked in shirt, fuck it, either look this cool, or don't bother  ;)

Chatham County Line were excellent.

Glasvegas give me the feeling that you'd be bored of them after less than an album.

i find the whole program incredibly safe and more than a little smug, there's no sense of danger about it never mind something out of the ordinary happening,

You could be describing today's music scene in general.

There's little that's dangerous or radical out there. All been seen and done before.

This is probably the most staid period for music ever.

Just noticed this is returning next week:

Tuesday 16 September
10:00pm - 10:30pm
BBC2

Jools entertains a whole host of musical talent. Godfathers of rock Metallica visit the studio for the first time in 12 years with tracks from their new album Death Magnetic. And making her UK TV debut, Italian-born First Lady of France Carla Bruni performs a song or two from her third album. Also in the studio are Tennessee foursome Kings of Leon, who showcase tracks from their upcoming fourth album Only by the Night, and New Jersey-born Nicole Atkins makes her UK TV debut.

Thought the Hootenanny was the best in a number of years ... more focus on the artists doing their own material rather than teaming up with Jools to play an old RnB number or (worse still) a new Jools composition :)

particularly enjoyed The Hold Steady and The Ting Tings

Older heads around here might remember the Old Grey Whistle Test review of the year were some of the best performances in studio during the year were compiled and put out on New Years eve ... I miss that ... no reason why they couldn't do that with Jools aswell as Hootenanny ?

I don't often disagree with you Victor but other than The Hold Steady and, perhaps Ting Tings, I thought it was poor, Duffy, Adele and Lily Allen no thanks. Martha Reeves, great song but their dresses were for 20 year olds not 60+.

I can live with artists I'm not fussy on doing their own stuff ... it was the lack of the insipid "soulful" covers from previous years shows that I thought was an improvement ... Martha Reeves vocals were also well past it too ... the Wife enjoyed Duffy and Adele tho ... first time I've had 2 artists to enjoy on Hootenanny in years :)

duffy would get it

Lenny Henry certainly seemed to agree with you :)

Later Live... returns this Tuesday 7 April at 10pm on BBC2 and includes the incredible Carole King, Franz Ferdinand, The Specials, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karima Francis and The Mummers. Don't miss it!

Not the most inspiring of line-ups to open but still great to have it back

Surely you jest.

The iconic Carole King & The Specials? Not to mention Franz Ferdinand & Yeah Yeah Yeahs, thats a fantastic lineup.

No.
Horses for courses I guess - FF and YYY do nothing for me.
Carole King's nice to see but for me she's a great songwriter, not a great performer
Have to admit it was good to hear the specials though!

Fair enough. I know what you mean about FF. But I rather like YYY, even though Karen O is a bit like Olive Oyl.
