Nice one Baz. What TV have you got?
The SDHC cards are a different format to normal SD cards (FAT32??) I think. hence popping them into a normal card slot on a PC wont read them. Its pretty easy to get the reader for a couple of quid that just plugs into the USB port though, and you can get it free with most orders of SDHC cards.
Unfortunately, running it from the USB port is quite poor with lots of jumping. I think this may be due to the USB speed, or maybe the cards speed as they have different class ratings. Once transferred onto the hard drive its OK though.
I've got a panny Hi Def camcorder that writes direct to SDHC card that I took on holiday a few weeks ago. I took 2 4G cards with me, but to tell the truth unless you're gonna go mad then you can get a lot of stuff on a single card. I didnt use the second card at all. The only problem with it is that you cant just remove the card and put it into the Blu ray player... it needs to be converted to AVCHD. Which seems a bit daft considering you can plug the camcorder in and play it direct.
I transferred the holiday, and my 1 year olds first birthday party, onto a standard DVD-R disc last night in AVCHD format and the quality is very very good. Plenty of room on the disc to get a fair bit of footage on as well.
the only problem I have at the moment is that the editing software I have (HDWriter - free with the camcorder) is pretty poor. Does the basics and thats about it. But its all I need at the mo. I'd like to get some decent stuff though. Tried downloading one or two but got a few virus' in them so binned it. Tonight I'm going to try and write the disk back to the SDHC card and see if that works.
Currently, the software only lets me write to a DVD drive, but eventually I want to be able to write direct to a 32G card that I can just keep adding to. A good history of things.
Sorry for the long post but I'm bored at work so I'll carry on regardless...
With the bird and the little one being away at her mams for 2 days I done some reconfiguring last night as well.
Put speaker cables into some trunking to keep her happy - well hopefully as no doubt it wont be right (As she's after a repaint anyway). Put all the cables under the carpet reasonably tidily, and then listend to some Zeppelin streamed from the upstairs computer via the Xbox 360. Great having no-one around.
The next step is to actually get all the stuff out of the living rooom and into the closet under the stairs. I've been looking at cheap racks (Ikea and Argos jobs) that will let me stack them out of sight. I've got power available in the closet so all I want is a HDMI lead (10m should do it) coming out of their to the telly (plus speaker cable). Everything else can be switched through the Onkyo receiver.
I've been looking at a Logitech Harmony 895 remote that is RF as well as IR that will allow me to control the all the gear through the walls, and get rid of all the current remotes I have. Its not cheap for a remote, but it does allow you to program it so its Heather proof
, in that all you have to do is press an activity marked "watch boring soaps" and it'll switch on all the gear and set all the right inputs. I'll have to rename the "stream porn from upstairs" button I think.
I've still to submit this idea for approval though.
Or I could just move into the garage
