I never said there was a doubt.....
I still don't see Blu-Ray taking over DVD or even sitting level with it. In my opinion it will be passed over as people move to digital distribution. Hopefully I am wrong, as I love having the physical media around.

Digital Distribution and Blu Ray will co-exist for a long time imo. The only thing stopping me is the cost, not any fear of it going out of style any time soon. Sony and the rest of the Blu Ray gang have invested too much time and money to let that happen. And most people, like yourself, me too, want to have something we can put on the shelf, especially if we're going to pay for it.

With current trends of SD cards then I actually think media will be changing to SD shortly. Simply replacing the current discs. The only reason why its not being pushed at the moment is due to the amount of money/personnel involved in the current disc based production.

Pretty much the same way that car stereos/Cds are not all being replaced by a single card slot.

With 32 Gig currently available, and more and faster transfer speeds touted shortly, then popping online and ordering your card in whatever format you want is not going to be that far away. The BD30 has an SD slot that already plays HI Def AVCHD movies. I think - and hope - that its only a matter of time before the tray is removed and large discs are a thing of the past.

Interesting shout... I'm covered either way though, I think our tv has a AVCHD SD card slot, and the PS3 has one too I think. Not tested either out though.

Nice one Baz. What TV have you got?

The SDHC cards are a different format to normal SD cards (FAT32??) I think. hence popping them into a normal card slot on a PC wont read them. Its pretty easy to get the reader for a couple of quid that just plugs into the USB port though, and you can get it free with most orders of SDHC cards.

Unfortunately, running it from the USB port is quite poor with lots of jumping. I think this may be due to the USB speed, or maybe the cards speed as they have different class ratings. Once transferred onto the hard drive its OK though.

I've got a panny Hi Def camcorder that writes direct to SDHC card that I took on holiday a few weeks ago. I took 2 4G cards with me, but to tell the truth unless you're gonna go mad then you can get a lot of stuff on a single card. I didnt use the second card at all. The only problem with it is that you cant just remove the card and put it into the Blu ray player... it needs to be converted to AVCHD. Which seems a bit daft considering you can plug the camcorder in and play it direct.

I transferred the holiday, and my 1 year olds first birthday party, onto a standard DVD-R disc last night in AVCHD format and the quality is very very good. Plenty of room on the disc to get a fair bit of footage on as well.

the only problem I have at the moment is that the editing software I have (HDWriter - free with the camcorder) is pretty poor. Does the basics and thats about it. But its all I need at the mo. I'd like to get some decent stuff though. Tried downloading one or two but got a few virus' in them so binned it. Tonight I'm going to try and write the disk back to the SDHC card and see if that works.

Currently, the software only lets me write to a DVD drive, but eventually I want to be able to write direct to a 32G card that I can just keep adding to. A good history of things.

Sorry for the long post but I'm bored at work so I'll carry on regardless...  :)

With the bird and the little one being away at her mams for 2 days I done some reconfiguring last night as well.

Put speaker cables into some trunking to keep her happy - well hopefully as no doubt it wont be right (As she's after a repaint anyway). Put all the cables under the carpet reasonably tidily, and then listend to some Zeppelin streamed from the upstairs computer via the Xbox 360. Great having no-one around.

The next step is to actually get all the stuff out of the living rooom and into the closet under the stairs. I've been looking at cheap racks (Ikea and Argos jobs) that will let me stack them out of sight. I've got power available in the closet so all I want is a HDMI lead (10m should do it) coming out of their to the telly (plus speaker cable). Everything else can be switched through the Onkyo receiver.

I've been looking at a Logitech Harmony 895 remote that is RF as well as IR that will allow me to control the all the gear through the walls, and get rid of all the current remotes I have. Its not cheap for a remote, but it does allow you to program it so its Heather proof  :) , in that all you have to do is press an activity marked "watch boring soaps" and it'll switch on all the gear and set all the right inputs. I'll have to rename the "stream porn from upstairs" button I think.

I've still to submit this idea for approval though.

Or I could just move into the garage  ;D

Funny. When I was researching the tv we got (Panasonic Th42PZ85- confirms it's SDHC compatible) I was reading on AVForums and someone said that once you started getting into all this AV stuff, you wouldn't be able to get out. Seems like that's what's happened to you  ;D Funny you mention your Panasonic camcorder- as I think that's the reason Panasonic put the SDHC reader in their tvs. Maybe it could be used for watching commercially bought films etc in time!

We have a nice network/media set up at home. PS3 and tv give amazing HD picture, and the PS3 wirelessly connected to the 2 computers in the house to stream media from (pictures, music, video) and a 500GB hard drive connected to the PS3- brilliant.

Just need a 5.1 surround sound to go with it- we're using the old tv stand at the moment, but my dad wants to get a new one in time, one which looks better than the 10 year old one off the old Toshiba  ;D

Blu-Ray is definitely better quality than DVD, but it is no where near the step that VHS to DVD was in terms of upgraded picture quality and overall functionality. No comparison at all.

It's nice to have one, but if it didn't come with the PS3, I'd have not bought one for a good few years.

Was watching Spiderman3 on Blu Ray last night (shit film, very nice looking in certain places though). Halfway through the film I realised it didn't look as good as I remembered it- that almost 3d quality wasn't there. Realised it was the IFC setting on the tv that did it (it's turned off when playing games- but I'd forgotten to switch it back on when watching the film). It gives a slightly surreal 3D, homevideo type picture that almost looks like you're looking through a window. So, it wasn't BluRay afterall- but the TV, that made it look so much better than DVD (the same setting does nothing for SD stuff- just looks the same).

Probably the best bit of the set up is the remote. I have the 525 and it works like a dream.

Yup- PZ85. It's the Intelligent frame creation (set to 'on' when watching films in HD, and off for everything else).

Seen Matrix (all 3) and Transformers in HD. They're very good.

Best HD stuff I've seen though is still Planet Earth- easily most impressive.

I got the DVD of Planet Earth about a week before the Blu Ray came out, still amazing but i'll be getting the Blu Ray soon. Wouldn't mind LOTR in HD too, not sure if this has been announced or anything yet? Also noticed that all my Blu Rays are 1080p but my TV is 1080i, not sure what the difference is there?

From the top of my head; 'i' means interlaced, and p means progressive. 1080i is 1080 pixels of video (vertical) sent interlaced- that is, the picture is sent 'incomplete' and the tv 'puts it together' on the fly. 1080p is same, but the video signal is sent all at once- no need for the tv to deinterlace the picture and put it together. Or something like that. Progressive is better in terms of quality of picture (an interlaced picture may result in jagged lines for example)- and 1080 in terms of definition of picture.

Think that's about right.

Yep.

Simpler terms

Think of it this way. With 'i' the image is "scanned" into the tv line by line. Where as with 'p' the lines are done at once

i have a ps3 and a sony bravia 1080p tv and i have 300, pirates of the caribbean trilogy, spiderman trilogy and planet earth on blu-ray... planet earth looks by far the best in most scenes although there are the odd scenes that dont look quite as good but i was wondering.. it says 1080i on the back of the planet earth box but it plays on my tv at 1080/24p and it looks better than any other blu-ray i have so im sure it must be 1080p? also there are 5 discs and the 5th disc plays in 1080i and doesnt quite look as good so im pretty much answering my own question but would like some clarification! 300 looks really grainy to me

Pretty much how it is.

The interlaced picture is produced in 2 passes at 60fps. On the first pass, the even lines are displayed and the odd lines are blank, the second pass fills in the blanks of the odd lines. This equates to a full screen at 30fps.

The progressive is different to that as all the information is displayed in one pass which gives a clearer and smoother picture.

Band of Brothers, Blu Ray for £34.99. Will definitely be getting this one.
Pre ordered this! This price is amazing seeing as it has 6 disks and when the SD version was around 60 to 70 notes when it first came out! Im also looking forward to Ironman on Blu-Ray!

I'm still on the 3 month free trial. Sent Jumper back the other day (shit film), and have just played and finished MGS4... but haven't sent that back yet as I thought my bro wanted to play it- but he hasn't played it for a week, so he can fuck off now.

Best Blu Ray film I've seen is still easily Apocalypto. Brilliant scenes that I haven't seen in any other film. Pearl Harbour came close with a couple of scenes tailing the Japanese fighter planes, but in general, it's still Apocalypto. Any you'd recommend?

Deja Vu was good to watch (shit film tho).  Spiderman 3 was lovely and Cars in HD is great too.  We liked Bewoulf too, very detailed but that is as much to do with the animation I think.

Oh and Planet Earth springs to mind :D

Yeah I've seen Spiderman 3- looks good in parts, but the actual film was a bit shit. Haven't seen Cars, but have seen Ratatouille on Blu Ray and it looked good. Might look into the others...

Have Planet Earth and have seen them all. Favourite ones are Mountains, Fresh Water and Shallow Seas. Absolutely amazing shots in those...

I liked those I mentioned most of all because they had the most amazing/'jaw dropping' scenes in them... from slow motions, great landscape shots, colours and animals.

Just started using easycinema (who, it turn use lovefilm) and it's been painless so far.   We watched Die Hard 4 the other night and, although the story line is stupid, it was pretty entertaining.  I think upgrading from the NAD to the Onkyo has helped though, the sound is just out-of-this-world  ;D  It also helps that I had ommitted to turn the volume up on the sub-woofer  ::) :-[

Not gonna be out till 2009 now judging by Peter jacksons comments Lee. I think its scheduled for a release to coincide with The Hobbit. Also, rumour is that it will be a complete box set with all extended/theatrical versions in.

What Onkyo did you get mate?

My subs a floorshooter and we had a couple of friends over the other week and after a few drinks we had some music on. I'd forgot to turn the sub on and my mates missus was sitting on the floor. I turned on the sub and she just smiled and said "Ooooh, I could get used to this"

Got 300 and Sin City (canadian import) the other day. Very impressed by the audio in 300 - the gf didn't like the grainy effect but I thought it was excellent overall. You can see every little detail in the red cloaks of the spartans as they're sitting around.

Does anyone know when The Lord of the Rings will be released on Blu-ray?

There is no way im going to replace my fave DVD's with Blu-ray versions, but I will make an exception for the Lord of the Rings!

Don't think there is an official date yet. Know in the summer someone said it would be out for xmas, but not heard anything...

Yeah the Dark Knight on Blu Ray sounds like a great prospect- expecting it to look amazing.

Anyone else noticed that these new Blu Rays are now coming at the same prices as DVDs- or maybe only with a £1-2 mark up? Maybe we'll see all of them start being better priced sooner rather than later. Sounds great to me- when I'll buy new films, I can buy them in HD at near enough the same price than if they were on DVD.
