Well, you know, Alisson apparently went from a World class keeper to a pile of shit. So...........

To be fair, I think quite a number of fans think that (that Alisson is poor at saving penalties), and I was initially in that camp too. But I have come to the view that it isn't Alisson or for that matter, other keepers who have become poor at saving penalties, but that players have become really good at taking them. I have seen a number of shootouts recently and almost invariably, the player scores. So I don't think Alission is poor at saving penalties, just that everyone else has become so good at taking them.

My sense of it is that as teams become increasingly determined to find every edge to win games, it will simply be standard practice for most teams to have their penalty takers practicing pens. When you have more players practicing pens, there will be a lot fewer poorly taken pens, and it will be harder and harder to save them.

With that said I haven't seen the data on pen saves in 2020 vs say, 2012. I could be well off.

One thing about keepers and pens, do none of them watch videos anymore? That diving fucker at Utd, after his stupid leap, 7 out of 8 times went to the keepers right and not always with a lot of power. Just watch it and then,when they get the guaranteed penalty, stand fucking still, wait for the leap and when he swings his leg, dive to the right. At least give yourself a chance of saving one.

We haven't had a clean sheet in any competition since the Stuttgart friendly, and he hasn't saved a Penalty since I can't remember when. I prefer to never criticise our players, as you would see if you were dedicated enough to go through my post history, but surely he is showing a slight dip in form statistically - pretty much since the restart?. I am prepared to accept the unique circumstances, but he still needs to shot stop a bit more and save one penalty this season.

Liked how he spent the first 45 sitting rolling spliffs and the second smiling at the variations in the individual grass blades. Also it was a beautiful moment when he got his sketchbook out and started mapping out the sky, the stadium, and the likely state of play.

It isn't though in senior matches from 18 penalties he has conceded on 12 occasions. In general penalties have a conversion rate of around 75%. Alisson is way above that.

The penalties stats are misleading because many pens are too strong for the keeper to save them and a sample size of 30 isnt enough to even those things out.

That being said Mignolet was very good at penalties. His save against Hoffenheim was crucial and it was definetly one of the hidden moments of our rise to the top.
