I have a bad cough now though I read it you have any symptoms they won't test you at the walk in centres, its why I ordered a home one.

Chances of false positives with lateral flow tests are very low, around 0.5% although false negatives are more common). The chance of it being a false positive when you have the main symptom of the virus are surely even less, sadly.

My personal experience of the LFTs (n=1) is that they're most likely to be positive when you're most infectious. The utility of  them as screening asymptomatic or even pre symptomatic in populations where covid is not rife is debatable and variable. Technique is an issue and some people probably don't she'd the virus in their nasal passage (this was more of an issue with PCRs in the first wave I'd say)

I was negative on the Thursday without symptoms, then faintly positive Friday with symptoms (also positive pcr) and strongly positive on Saturday. Negative lft (done for interest) after a few days.

If you have a cough and positive LFT but negative pcr I would question the pcr and probably get it done again.

The test centre I went to was a bit funny. They don't want your window down except to give the pack and again right at the end and they've all got masks on. So it was a real job to hear what they were saying and I was shunted between about 3 different sections or the car parks. I guess they have a system in place which is most useful when they're busy and they have to try and keep everyone as safe as possible.

Just to make this n=2, my recent experience was that I most likely caught it on either the 16/10 or 23/10, had a sore throat on 26/10 but tested negative on a LFT  and then got a positive LFT result (confirmed by subsequent PCR) on 29/10. Interestingly even though I didn't take any isolation action till I tested positive neither of my housemates caught it off me.

The track and trace issue (assuming you are talking about 'manual' track and trace) is a difficult one IMHO. If I take my own situation as an example - if you assume that track and trace needs to contact anyone who was recently in a closely packed unventilated space with somebody who has tested positive - for myself that would entail contacting everybody at a c 150 attendee wedding, everybody that was in the nightclub we went to after and everyone who shared the two full train carriages with me there and back. That kind of manual track and trace only works if you either have very low numbers of infections or a high level of restrictions on activity that is ensuring that the potential number of contacts for an infectious person is as low as possible.

In the current situation I think the only workable solution is to encourage people to keep using the app so that they get the notifications to tell them that they have been in close contact with somebody who has tested positive so that they can look out for symptoms and take tests more regularly. Again just going off my own experience - very few people I know still have the app installed. My downstairs neighbour who does still have it got pinged when I reported my test.

Mates of ours lad has tested positive, he's 12. Mum has had 3 jabs now as she is high risk, Dad won't get the jab for all sorts of bullshit reasons. Seeing as he is 61, I hope he doesn't catch it off the lad and find out the hard way why he should have got the jab.

Thanks mate. Considering I've been using public transport since September probably done well to avoid it up to now. I hope your wife is feeling better, it's amazing how you can live with someone and not get it. The school stuff is so crazy, but it's like our place. Even in the midst of when the pandemic was even worse than now, they were never going to shut down the workplace despite people going off with covid. I am just amazed it didn't rip through us all, but most people at work didn't get it.

My daughter got vaccinated on the Friday before Burnley home game. Morning of the match she was fine and had a feast ice cream. Anyway we were sat in the main stand about 15 minutes before kick off and she turns white, says she feels sick so she puts her mask on and we head to the toilets but it is too late, brown, chocolate vomit starts emitting from behind her mask and onto the floor. You should have seen the crowds on the concourse part as she made her way through  She was fine after that though.

Not my experience. Do you mean in shops?

Have to say mask wearing in my office has definitely dropped a lot. The policy in my work is you have to wear one when not sat at your desk but loads aren't bothering anymore.

In shhops and on buses though I still think complinace is probably around 90%.

They can't even agree whether to wear them in the HoC with a lot of higher risk individuals crammed into a relatively small room.  I don't see them mandating them anywhere anytime soon.

Virtue signalling trumps common sense with this lot every time.
