A scabby mishit from Craig Johnston right in front of the Away fans in the Scoreboard Paddock in ‘82 gave us a 1-0 win. We had a pretty bad record at OT in those years so that win was celebrated wildly even whilst running the gauntlet down Warwick Road afterwards.

Was at that one too, after that game we got a train  back to Liverpool that stopped at all the smaller stations on the way back, think it was Eccles....older Fella ( i was 17 at the time) stands up as it is pulling in and rallies the troops " alright lads, this is where it's on, lets go....i sat there thinking what the fucks going on....then realized that a full on battle was about to occur....it did, it was scary as fuck, they all came back on laughing like fuck.

1983 Milk Cup Final - Liverpool 2 v 1 Man United

My first trip to Wembley -  the "seats" were just a long wooden bench !

Whelan scored the winner in extra time, a great curler inside the far post.

I heard a jeweller's and shop selling sheepskins got turned over just before the game.

My Dad was so bevvied, me and my brother had to walk him back to the train station.

Special game for a number of reasons, Bob Paisley's last Wembley appearance, yet another Barney Rubble goal in a cup final, a fantastic winning goal from Ronnie Whelan and to cap it all it was against Man United. I remember Fairclough came on and had a number of chances to make the victory much more emphatic, shame really as I'm not sure how many more games he played for Liverpool, it was probably his last cup final.

One of my faves was FA Cup Semi v Portsmouth 1992, my 3rd time at Highbury but first one the North Bank ('The Home of Football' the sign said). Loved that ground. Teenager then, so used all the money I had saved and spent 40 quid on a £9 ticket. I always loved going London on my own. Half the stadium blue and white, erupted when Anderton put them ahead in extra time. I was dead line with Barnes's free kick and remember the beautiful curl he put on it, as it smacked the post some in front where celebrating and a surge, all i could see was the top of then net and then it shook, couldn't see him but Whelan had tapped it in. Saved.
That was a great day. Got the Special from Lime Street at 6am (think it was a really early kick off, the FA putting the fans first again as usual) and was on the North Bank too, it was packed wasn’t it. I thought we were going out that day but turned out our name was on the cup.
Worked in an office in town at the time and apart from a token bluenose it was all Reds, so it was like a works day out for the final as the boss put a minibus on. The 90s were a bit sparse for us on the old trophy front, so it’s nice to remember one of the successes.

Not really famous as such but deffo a one off . Or a two off. Was anybody at the Screen Sport Super Cup games when we snotted Everton ? All I remember is Mcmahon scored a header from outside the box at the Kop.

Aye Inter 65 and is there anyone out there that went to Hampden in 66, when we played Dortmund in the Cup Winners Cup Final? In all my time following the Reds I've never come across anyone who lay's claim to being at that one.

You hardly hear anyone ever talk about that Dortmund Cup Winners Cup Final. It was our 1st European Final as well. Beat Juventus and Celtic on the way to the final.

With the final being in Scotland you'd have expected loads of Reds to be there. But like you say I've never heard anyone talk about it. I'm going to ask my old fella about it tonight though he'd have only been 13-14 at the time of the game
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Juventus at Anfield in 2005. Fucking hell. I know the Chelsea semi gets spoken about more, probably rightly so, but that Juve game was phenomenal. The definite turning point between us making up the numbers in that tournament to, hold on a minute...we can actually win this fucking thing. The team sheets were an absolute mismatch.

For us: Carson, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore, Luis Garcia, Gerrard, Biscan, Riise, Le Tallec (Smicer 73), Baros (Nunez 66).

For them: Buffon, Zebina (Montero 81), Cannavaro, Thuram, Zambrotta, Blasi (Pessotto 45), Emerson, Camoranesi, Nedved, Del Piero (Trezeguet 61), Ibrahimovic.

Talk about David v Golliath. Fair enough, Gerrard was better than every single one of their players, and Hyypia (& possibly Carra too) could hold their own alongside any of their boys, but beyond that we looked out of our depth. Buffon, Cannavaro, Thuram, Nedved, Del Piero, Ibrahimovic... all giants of the game. Their least heralded player was the Brazilian captain ffs!

That was my first Anfield European night - needless to say it lived up to the hype. It's quite strange for a first leg to be so intense, but I think there was a few things at play in the atmosphere -  the emotions of it being the first competitive fixture between the two clubs since Heysel, the quality of opposition, the magnitude of the stage, the knowing that we as a crowd would all have to play our part more than ever to help our boys overcome the mismatch in talent.

Anyways, you all know what happened next. I'll leave you with one of the greatest moments I've ever had watching us. It's somewhat overshadowed by Garcia's brilliant goal, but this one will always mean more to me, it was the moment it hit home that we can go all the way.

True. My dad went to Celtic Away in 66 in the Cup Winners Cup, so must have been the same season. He was still at school I think and went up with some mates, got taken in by some locals who bought them drinks pre match in their local. Had never realised we were in Glasgow twice in the same season.

That was the worst away I ever went to, I was in the Kippax, not far from the segregation fence. The Mancs hurled sharp stuff at us all all night, always remember something just missed me and twatted a barrier so hard it produced sparks. After the match its legendary what went on (inc the garden fence thrown through a living room window!) The manc coppers didn't give a fuck, one horsebacked prick told me and my brother he was 'on a break,  when we told him we where getting legged. Even at the train station we where getting jumped on and nobody gave a fuck.

But best games, far too remember to recall, but if I had to pick one it has to be St Etienne, it had the lot. Pure pandemonium in a packed standing Kop at night can't be bettered!

Got to agree with all of that.  I was on one of the buses going back to the train station and something was lobbed through the front window.  Then a load of the bus seats were chucked through the windows.  Absolute mayhem.  Our bus was boarded by police and escorted to the local nick.  I spent all night in the police station in an interview room with a WPC.  Finally let out at 6 o'clock the next morning.

This undoubtedly was my worst away game,no windows or seats on my bus going to Oxford Road station?

Were you on the same bus as me ?

I was in the Kemlyn for this game . My ticket was for by the half way line or somewhere but of course being the age I was a moved towards the away section and stood at the back of the Kemlyn. Cant remember much about it apart from Molby's goals. Someone said on here years ago that someone fired a flare at the Mancs and it got stuck in the stanchion above them and showered down on them .

May have been mentioned before as I haven’t read the whole thread but was this the match where the United players got tear gassed as they got off the coach ?

Gerrard's premier league debut where he scored a belter.

Who was the opponent?

My Dad went and possibly hitched. He hitched to Germany in 65 I think for the pre season. Maybe 67 actually as he always tells me a story about Emlyn Hughes getting sent off I think. Him and his mates from Hartsbourne Avenue made it to the Echo on that trip. Theres a picture of them all with their rucksacks . I had the cutting from the Echo but I had a house fire in 2003 and it went west. Surely I can find the original print somewhere ?

Derby County v Liverpool, 26 December 1988 at the Baseball Ground

Score           1-0 to Liverpool (Ian Rush)
Competition   League Division One
Attendance   25,213

Boxing day 1988 and here's me with a raging hangover on a freezing cold day, holding a couple of tickets for this match, including the coach tickets and thinking to myself "This wasn't one of my greatest ideas". I was taking my girlfriend to the game and she was always positive so off we went. She used to come on the Kop with me sometimes and I noticed how the gentlemen of the Kop used to make space for us and make sure we were comfortable, umm, never noticed that when I was on my own.

The coach journey was pretty uneventful, although I can't remember taking much notice and I've no idea which route we took. Whilst making the arrangements for the match, I thought I may be hungover for this one which is why I probably booked the coach. As we got off the coach the freezing cold hit us and I wasn't dressed for this, after all I wasn't going up Snowdon! Adidas samba trainers, skin tight jeans, two tone Adidas Cagoule, oh but I did have the classic red Liverpool bobble hat and scarf so I did have a bit of sense. Luckily it was only a short walk to the ground and I always kind of relied on being stood in a crowd to keep relatively warm, it always seemed colder in the seats. However it was still cold enough to persuade me to buy a cup of Bovril and my feet were like blocks of ice by the end of the game.

I remember this being a really tough match for Liverpool with chances being few and far between, I was quite impressed with Derby. It had 0-0 written all over it and on reflection this would have been a fair result, but then Barnes dispossessed their right back deep in our half, moved it quickly to McMahon in the centre circle, who in turn sprayed a pass towards the right corner towards Beardsley. He beat the left back with a nice bit of skill then centred into the six yard box for Rush to finish first time - Bang 1-0 in the blink of a eye, I really didn't expect that! It was right in front of me and the ball was bulging in the net, yet such was the speed of the attack, it took a second for it to register with me. I then went mental with all the other hard core Liverpool fans that day in that tiny terrace that we had filled to the brim. It was such a nice feeling travelling back on that nice warm coach after a result like that, the team did us proud that day and I think they seemed to appreciate the efforts that we would make to get to games like this.

As I said, I was quite impressed with Derby and whilst researching this game, it turns out that their team contained Dean Saunders, Mark Wright and Peter Shilton and I think they were 4th at the time. They actually did the double over Arsenal that season which emphasises just what a great result this was for Liverpool on the day.

I was at Hampden for our first European Cup Final in 66.

The Reds were on a high having beaten Chelsea five days earlier to win the title for the second time in 3 years.

It was on a Thursday morning I met up with three other Reds on the Wirral one of whom had an old car. We chipped in for petrol for what seemed like an age of a journey to Glasgow where it rained from start to finish of our visit. This didn't dampen our fans enthusiasm despite there being vast spaces inside Hampden which could have been due to the locals non attendance.

Celtic fans were still furious about their defeat in the semi at Anfield when they had a late clearly offside goal disallowed which would have seen them through to the final in Glasgow. Added to this was tv showing it live so maybe they didn't want to part with their money. Take your pick which one!!

Our team was the normal eleven that started most matches in those victorious seasons. The one variation was Geoff Strong who started some games but was injured for this one and in fact scored the decisive goal in that semi final second leg. The majority of the 40,000 attendance seemed to be Reds.

We didn't play well in the first half as both defences were on top and it was a shock when centre forward Sigi Held burst through to smash the ball past Lawrence at the start of the second half. We were to become familiar with several of the Dortmund players who were part of (West) Germany's march to the World Cup Final later in the summer. Held, Paul, Emmerich and the goalie Tilkowski all played so they were no slouches.

It didn't take long for us to equalise when Peter Thompson ran to the byline before crossing to Roger who brought it down and scored with no fuss and marched back to get on with what we expected would be victory.
The Dortmund players surrounded the referee to complain the ball was out before Thompson crossed but the goal stood. We pressed for the winner and Roger and St John had chances but the pitch was really heavy now as the rain continued and it went to extra time.

I remember us attacking constantly for most of the extra 30 minutes until on their rare attack they scored a strange goal in what I remember as the last couple of minutes at the far end from us. I have since found out it was 13 minutes from the end. They were the quickest 13 minutes I have ever watched. Dortmund had a breakaway, Lawrence came out to do his sweeper job and the ball went to Libuda out on the right wing. He lobbed it in from a least 40 yards and Rowdie ran back to attempt a clearance. The ball hit the far post and rebounded onto Ron and into the net.I couldn't believe we were losing to such a freak goal.

The whole of the Reds support then sang a slow very loud version of YNWA in the remaining minutes as we were still behind them. I've not heard it sung that slow very often since that night which is surely the best way.
The team didn't play at their best but we later learned that Roger was still feeling the effects of an injury and the heavy pitch took its toll.

It was an even longer trip back from Scotland after losing our first European Final but many successful ones were to follow to wipe away the pain of this one. It would be seven years before we made another one and this time the heavy rain helped us against another German team.

The first leg of the UEFA cup final v Borussia Moenchengladbach was called off when the pitch flooded and the match played a day later again on the Thursday when Shanks brought Toshack into the team having spotted a weakness in the air from the Germans. It paid off as we won 3-0 paving the way for our first European trophy.

Found that winning Dortmund goal which is still hard viewing.

I actually managed to find a video clip of the match, its at 37:30:-

The library will have a copy on microfiche or ask the Echo.

Or try this https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1967-01-01/1976-12-31?retrievecountrycounts=false&newspapertitle=liverpool%20echo&sortorder=dayearly

Thanks it means a lot . I've asked on here years ago and someone popped up with stuff but I forgot to chase it up. Thanks.

It's the next season 1988-89, we won 1-0 on Boxing Day.

Sorry Yosser, beat me to it.

Cheers . Our kid was on the telly that game. Just after Johnston scored the camera went onto the Liverpool end and there he was standing on one of the bars bouncing. Ah. I miss him.

May have been mentioned before as I haven’t read the whole thread but was this the match where the United players got tear gassed as they got off the coach ?

That was February '86, there's quite a good article about it here:-

One game that stick in my mind is the 6-2 versus Spurs in 1993. It was the final game the season and played on a really sunny, warm May day.  We'd had a really poor season finishing 6th and United had broken their title drought.

However, I remember that Tottenham game having an amazing atmosphere. I think it might have been a 'flag' day because I remember loads of colour and flags on the Kop that day. Maybe it's my memory playing tricks with me but given the situation you'd have expected the ground to be like a morgue and it was bouncing. Graeme Souness was our manager that season and for some reason I have a hazy recollection that he didn't take charge of this game and that there was rumours swirling that he was about to be sacked. Can anyone else remember that?

We battered Spurs that day though the scoreline was inflated a little by a few late goals. A certain Neil Ruddock played, what I think was, his last game for Spurs that day. It should have been a stark warning to anyone watching that he blatantly wasn't good enough for a top team. Unfortunately Graeme Souness bought him for 2.5M the next summer. Maybe Souness not being at this game explains why we weren't put off by his performance.

The other thing I can remember about that final game of the season was that there were loads of goals in the Premier League that day. Just had a look back at the scrores for Saturday 8th May. There was a 6-2, a 5-2, a 4-3, a 4-2 and 2x 3-3's all in the one day. 47 goals across 9 fixtures! I wonder if there's ever been another day in the modern era that has seen so many goals in the top flight.

I remember that game, but wasn’t there. Have a feeling Souness was rumoured to be at Coventry scouting Peter Ndlovu which seems very weird! Think Rush and Barnes helped themselves to a few didn’t they?

So they played better when Souness wasn't there?  :o

Now that you mention it, the scouting of Peter Ndlovu rings a bell. Pretty sure that information came out after the game had finished though.

Your memory is right. And it was a flag day because there was a rumour that the club was going to knock down the Kop over the summer and start the new stand.

Souness certainly wasn't present and the two explanations that were circulating on the Kop were 1. He's been sacked. 2. He was checking out a player somewhere else as a possible buy. I don't remember a name being given to that player. Nick thinks Ndlovu. Possible I suppose. Anyway the whole thing was bloody odd. Before the match half the Kop were chanting Souness's name, while the other half were booing it.

But the game itself was fantastic. I think that's the only 6-2 scoreline I've ever seen. Didn't Grobelaar save a pen too?

Obviously the Kop lasted another season but I can't remember those rumours at the end go the 92/1993 season.

Can anyone remember the games early on in the 1994-95 season? My memory is a bit blank for that season so maybe I didn't go that much. Definitely remember a few games from that season. 3-0 versus Arsenal, the 1-0 defeat at home to Ipswich so I obviously went to some games.  In that season was the Kop out of action for a large proportion of it? Between 1985 and 1994 I had a ST in the Anfield Road end and from about 1996 to ~2006 I had an ST in the Kop. That period in between I went the games but just can't recollect what the Kop re-build was like and how it affected the games. Looking at the attendances that season it hovered around 30k for most of the 1st half of the season and was back up to 40k by the end.

To be fair I remember what Arsenal did more than us when they re-developed part fo their ground. They had some sort of mural of a crowd behind the North Bank (?) when they re-developed that stand. That was a bit weird!

Then they had to destroy the mural and paint a replacement. The original artist somehow thought black people didn't go to watch football.

Aye Inter 65 and is there anyone out there that went to Hampden in 66, when we played Dortmund in the Cup Winners Cup Final? In all my time following the Reds I've never come across anyone who lay's claim to being at that one.

My Dad went to the Hampden game and a painter I worked with also went. The painter sadly died and at his funeral during the service my phone went off and played that Johnny Cash song we used to sing. My Dad went to all the games from the 50's - 80's, I went to all the games from the 70's - 90's and my son goes to all the games now.

My Dad's Dad had seven brothers who all went in the Annie Rd for every game and went to many away games in the 1940's, my Grandson has a lot to look up to..
