What no Reggae thread?
« on: June 9, 2008, 01:20:18 pm »
Well summers here and is there better music to skank to?

I'll start us with this classic.

Chase the devil.

Let it rip Papa Maxi.        8)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=N505JczoEGI&feature=related

Lucifer son of the mourning, I'm gonna chase you out of earth!
I'm gonna put on a iron shirt, and chase satan out of earth
I'm gonna put on a iron shirt, and chase the devil out of earth
I'm gonna send him to outa space, to find another race
I'm gonna send him to outa space, to find another race.
He who sees himself in all beings and all beings in himself loses all fear.

Pete Tosh, founder member of the Wailers with Bob Marley, some people say almost as much a genius as the great man himself.

Good post. Definitely the sound of summer, and winter, if you're lucky enough to get away somewhere warm.

I know there's a school of thought that says that Bob Marley was never as influential within the Jamaican reggae scene as he was on the world reggae scene, but the man was a genius. Real tragedy that he died at what, 38 years old?

Catch a Fire or Exodus are great, great albums, and this always brings a lump to my throat

I love the song Slave Driver.

Slave driver the table is turned
Catch a fire so you can get burned
Slave driver the table is turned
Catch a fire you're gonna get burned

Ev'ry time I hear a crack of the whip
My blood runs cold

I remember on the slave ship
How they brutalised their very souls
Today they say that we are free
Only to be chained in poverty

Good god, I think it's all illiteraci
It's only a machine that makes money
Slave driver the table is turned.

Any Misty in Roots heads in?

This album is fuckin' class and it reminds me off my green days back in '92.

Well in Kesey my man.

Here are the lyrics to the best reggae song ever recorded and I don't mean maybe.  Jah Rastafari by Culture.

Too long in our little ghetto wrong has been going on - let's protest
Children of Israel who really love rights

For Jah set I&I as a watchman - around Babylonian walls
Oh, Children of Israel

I&I should never hold I peace while wrong is going on - day or night

Man! Bust down Babylon gates - preparing the way - preparing the way for Jah People

Fight down war crime, fight down war and crime, fight down war and crime
And build up righteousness

Jah Rastafari, Jah Rastafari, Jah Rastafari - preserve all people

Put crime away - put crime away again

Jah set I&I still as a watchman, around Babylon walls
Yes, Children of Israel
I&I should never hold our peace - while we are penalized day and night

We should chant down Babylon doors - preparing the way for Jah people

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.

All crackers, as you say (not that sure about Ziggy though) but you have one stand out artist in that list.  A man who stands head and shoulders atop the reggae tree.  Lee Perry is, for me, the greatest of all reggae performers.  Other good or great artists though are Culture (who sadly lost their lead singer, Joe Hill last year), Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman and Frankie Paul.

My first Reggae album.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rR_vHefJ1fU

That album has special, special resonance with me nowadays.  I always loved it as a kid when it first came out but the owners of a little side-street cafe in Istanbul were playing that on the greatest night of our Liverpool lives while we sat there, all high as kites on adrenalin and euphoria.  The love I feel for that album just grew and grew that particular night.

Indeed.  In fact, I feel a bit daft as I have no idea how to post a you tube track and there's a few good Culture ones on there.  Any ideas how to do it?

Thanks to Chopper, Culture present a live recording of Jah Rastafari.  For the album version, hit on the image of Haille Sellasie above it on the You Tube page.  Mesmeric stuff indeed.

Anybody else seen Bob Marley live? 8)

Bob Marley: "Greetings in the name of His Majesty, Emperor Haile I Selassie I. Jah! Rastafari!
ever living, ever faithful, ever sure.
..."

Intro to my fav reggae album:

Bob Marley and the Wailers: "Babylon by Bus"

I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.
