I guess if this is true they may start gunning for England games and the Cricket next.

It will be interesting to see how Sky reports this news.

Good news for the Premiership? In that they could price the Premier league higher knowing Sky aren't forking out on Champions League.

I'd miss the other sports I think, espcially the cricket.

I don't have BT Sport at the moment, I resent forking out extra on top of the shitload I already pay. Just seems like one payment too far. Might have to review that in the future!

On the plus side Chiles maybe out of a job.

@danroan: As part of the deal, BT assure UEFA it will make a wide range of matches free to air (sponsors worried about matches coming off terrestrial)

I'm not a big fan of this at all. ITV have lost their sports coverage so theres no watching a game on tv and BT might go and up their rates anytime - and infact for broadband they have recently. Frankly it's a pain in the arse and for a fair chunk of people takes champions league football away entirely.

Scratch that, read the above.

Big loss for football fans in this country really - it's just more money to spend.

They may offer some free matches but they are bound to raise their prices and sky won't reduce theirs.

You can also expect sky to take this badly and start outbidding everyone else for everything from now on.

Far be it from me to start sticking up for Sky but is there a danger here of BT getting too big for their boots? I suppose it was going to take a really big hitter to dislodge Sky (If ITV and Disney couldn't even do it) but it's potentially dangerous if they become the dominant player in telephony, internet and broadcast services.

Mind you, as they hold a number of Freeview Licences including a Free-to-View Channel as used for the Free Weekend a few weeks back it's not strictly true to state this "would end two decades of Champions League football on terrestrial TV" as per the BBC Report. *edit* as just indicated by the Dan Roan Tweet

How odd.

It doesn't really affect Sky unless BT will get more than ITV's current 1 live game.

The fact Sky aren't reporting they are on the verge of renewing the contract might indicate BT are taking Sky's Matches as well?

It's the complete Champions League package as far as I can tell, so it does affect Sky, massively in fact.

BT are not the cheapest on the market - and the fact they made current subscribers sign up for another 12 month contract indicates they are more than prepared to take advantage of the fact.

(Ended up renewing myself but only after requesting a MAC Code because they would not allow me to take up one of their headline offers)

BBC have always had problems with bidding for this because they won't show the Sponsor Promos at the beginning...?

Ah that makes more sense. Ł1bn for live rights as opposed to one game a round.

Mind you BT currently would only able to show 4 live games a round compared to Sky's 15.

I guess if they do win the rights they have about a year and an half to sort that out.

For the money they're paying it would be relatively straightforward to secure the extra channel capacity they need - but the next question is will they do anything about Multiroom which they don't offer at the moment?

They have 1 a week and not even one this week. It is exactly what ESPN had.
