Before the perverts come out of the woodwork, a question about DIY about the house/flat/apartment?

I ask because I'm shit at it and my missus gives me stick about it.

When we moved into our new house, I got really enthusiastic about doing things myself. Most of my mates are tradesmen...plumbers/joiners/roofers etc but I don't like asking them to do jobs because they won't take any money off me.

I put up four curtain poles when we moved in. They weren't up for more than 3 months. I blamed the wife and her heavy curtains.

Are you good with screwdrvers and shit?

In the old house we had a shower cubicle put in. Afterwards one of the floorboards in the bathroom was loose and creaky so I decided to try and fix it. Armed with a hammer and some nails, I set about the repair. I put a nail in the middle of the floorboard and hit it with the hammer. Next thing, a jet of very hot water shot out of the nail hole. I had inadvertently put a nail through the hot water pipe...what a fucking nightmare!!!

Nope. Everytime I have to do manual labour it's like I got 10 thumbs and when I pick up a hammer the odds are in the favour of me hitting a part of my hand rather than what I was aiming for.

Luckily my old man is a carpenter and usually a guilt inducing phone call is all I need to get things done :P

Jason23. When you come across a loose floorboard, it's usually loose for a reason.

Any tradesman worth his salt will always run a pipe or cable down the centre of a floorboard, so the floorboard can be re-secured at the sides. If it's loose enough, always try to lift a board to have a quick peak underneath to make sure.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone out to fix a water or gas leak because some absolute idiot who doesn't know what they are doing, has put a nail or screw through a pipe.

I am shit. Beyond really basic stuff I don’t have a clue. I fully blame my Dad – he was always shit at it too so therefore he never taught me anything. My father-in-law is quite decent so we get him round to help if stuff needs doing and I just ‘help’ by standing around feeling useless. He’s a bit of a blagger, he doesn’t always know what he’s doing but he has the confidence to try anyway. I know if something is going to be too tough for me and don’t even bother!

Yup but I defer to my man just to make him feel needed. It's a tad annoying though because everytime he puts up a shelf he ends up making huge craters in the walls which are unsightly, I'd do best to do it all myself because I don't see what all the fuss is about when putting shelves up, you just fucking put em up, but one must stroke the mans ego and all that.

Edit: In case he reads this I feel compelled to balance my comment by saying he tries his best and does as he's asked and does sort things out for me and all that. He's not all that bad. I just hate him putting up shelves.  ;D

I like to think I'm reasonably competant at most things though my wife is probably a better judge on that but she seems happy and I've truly saved an enormous amount of money over the years with DIY.
Mostly, it's a matter of commonsense, reading up, planning and patience, lots of it to start with, and getting the right tools for the job, and the more you do it, the better you can become.
These days I'm happy doing plumbing, electrics, electronics, plastering, brickwork, woodwork, welding, metalwork, I've even got a decent lathe I use to make components though I'd love a milling machine but I'll have a go at most things. I do want to have a crack at foundry work sometime though, casting stuff. I've got a huge pile of old brass taps I want to melt down and make something arty with, a Hepworth or Moore thing, and I even picked up a blacksmiths forge for pennies, gas forge, anvil and tools about ten years ago and plan to have a go at that soon. Roaring fire, heating iron up and bending it into shapes with big hammers, followed by the time honoured tradition of lots of beer afterwards to slake your thirst....a step up from a barbeque. ... Look Helga, I've made a sword...
I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

I can do basic things with hammers, saws, screwdrivers etc. I've changed light fixings, re-covered the shed roof, put up shelves, ran cables around the outside of the house, so on. I like to think I know my limits, but I'm willing to have a go up until a waterpipe is involved, or similar. I don't have anything in the way of special tools (except), so welding and the like are out.

What annoys me is people like my brother, who refuses to learn even the most basic DIY skills (resulting in my mum's house falling apart). Seriously, I had to go over there once to re-insert one of those square rods through a door handle and screw the handle back onto the door, as they had no idea how to get it back together and were locked out of the living room!

I'm pretty sure I could have done this at 12 years old, he's 27 now and won't even have a play with it to see how it goes together...

My mates are exactly the same, so we usually buy all materials and then if they still wont take any money we let them do the job and them buy them a present after. Usually something like a crate of beer or bottle of spirits as a thank you.

Between me and the missus we've renovated most of the house over the past 3 years. For the really big jobs we've got help from her dad. He's in his seventies but really knows his stuff. He's in permanent slow motion but his help was worth the wait.

Funny thing about DIY is its the one activity that will have the two of us screaming at each other in about 5 seconds flat. We laugh about it later, but its crazy how short our fuses are over something as stupid as putting a wardrobe up!

Half the battle is preparation and thinking about it first. if you're impatient, like me, then you are likely to go charging in and make basic errors which invariably leads to the job taking twice as long.

I'm generally pretty handy, I leave the major things such as plumbing and electrics to professionals. When I had a bathroom reno in Oz, the plumber said that a significant proportion of his work was from people who had a go at doing something themselves, fucked everything really badly and then needed to call him in to fix their fuckup and then do whatever they were trying in the first place!

My other half's old man is an electrician so anything down that route and we're sorted, he fitted our air con unit with some of the guys from work, obviously because she was living there he wouldn't take any payment, in the end I managed to get him a nice bottle of scotch which he was more than happy to accept ;)

Most of the stuff I have done is basic common sense repairs/DIY, assembling furniture is fine, cemented up the gaping hole in the back wall left by the tradies during the bathroom reno, plastered up the doorframes where we had sawn the door off to open the space up (it's a weird one, metal doorframes with a hollow metal door in so not like standard wooden door/doorframes), re-hung the bathroom door when it was misaligned, put in a shelf in the shower, re-grouted some gaps between tiles etc etc. Also helped my old man back in the UK do some fencing and hanging some new gates in the garden, plus chainsawing up some logs etc etc.

Definitely enjoy getting into it, I love the adrenaline of coming up against something you aren't sure and half the brain says "fuck it just go for it" and the other half says "yeah but what if you fuck it up and cut through a gas main/water pipe/electrics", then trying to work out how to do whatever needs doing without causing any disasters.

He's made Kaizer wet himself with excitement then cry when he realises all in one post. Ban him? Knight him in the new year's honours!

I'm ok at most things. Agree with jaffod, preparation is important.

My dad can do pretty much everything and I've been helping him from I was about 10 so I've learnt all I know from him. I can now put floors down, wallpaper, wee bit of plumbing and electrics, shelving and shit like that. Have also helped him out with a bit of wall building and paving but don't think I could do that on my own.

Really don't understand people that can't lift a fucking paint brush though. Seriously gets on my fucking wick.

That pretty much sums my situation up as well

Didi Hamann

In the corridors and changing rooms of Anfield I met many people - the great, the talented, the legendary.  I know that I only met one genius.  He was a small, smiling man with a neatly clipped beard.  His name was Rafael Benitez.
