Perhaps the answer is simply to adapt our style of play for a few weeks to offer more protection to the keeper until Alisson is back from injury. Don't see much point in spending money on someone worse like Butland, or someone like Ben Foster who has far as I'm aware has never played as a sweeper keeper either.

It isn't that simple though.

Teams now allow us to dominate possession and drop off. In the last derby Everton the home team had 30% of possession. Even in the Villa debacle we had 70% possession. For us to be effective we need to stay compact. If we don't then teams will just rip through us in the transitions.

So we’re stuck with Adrian now. What happens if he costs us the derby tomorrow with yet another horror show? It could totally derail our season.

Or.......... what if he has an absolute blinder, builds his confidence and is a solid replacement until Allison is back?
Never seen him playing I think. But looks like a good player.

He just needs safety first tomorrow. If the ball comes to him, just get your foot through and clear it. None of what we saw against Villa for the first goal. If we can avoid putting him under unnecessary pressure that would be ideal. Although he was under no pressure for the first Villa goal and still managed to fuck it up royally!

If the whole team has to change their style of play to accommodate the back up keeper then we have the wrong back up keeper.

I just feel that the entire team is [criminally] culpable when it lets in 7 goals to a team such as Villa. Yes, Adrian was poor for the first  one (and pretty much set the tone for the whole evening) but what was the rest of the team doing during the match? Just reacting to the events? Poor all round.

Adrian - New Contract
« Reply #1730 on: June 14, 2021, 03:25:07 pm »

Quote
Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has signed a new, extended contract with the club.

The Spanish stopper joined the Reds on a free transfer in August 2019 and has made 24 appearances in all competitions to date, lifting the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup along the way.

Adrian’s spell at Anfield will continue after he put pen to paper on a new deal following the end of the 2020-21 season.

“I’m delighted, I’m very happy to stay in the club,” the No.13 told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Firstly, because it’s a reward from the club for the hard work that I’ve been doing since I signed two years ago. I really appreciate that confidence from the club, from the manager and from everyone involved in that situation.

“And secondly, and above all of that, it’s a pleasure to stay in Liverpool – it’s such a big club. But being as well a family club, it’s very special for any player to stay here. I am privileged.”

Last season, Adrian shared back-up duties to Alisson Becker with Caoimhin Kelleher, featuring on six occasions for Jürgen Klopp’s men and claiming three clean sheets.

The 34-year-old is now eager to play his part next term as Liverpool aim to build on a 10-game unbeaten Premier League run that secured third place and Champions League qualification in May.

“I try to help the team in every moment,” he said. “To try to enjoy and give my experience in every second, to the player who plays in that moment or when I play, to try to be together at the same time.

“As Jürgen said, I’m a team player – I try to support, to give that confidence to those players, to try to give that confidence in the dressing room, in the training ground every day. To push each other.

“Because when you are giving your best, the other one is giving their best for sure and you’re pushing each other. At the end, it’s good for the club, for the group, for the manager as well to take the right decision in the moment for the game.

“I’m happy to do that job and also to try to have my opportunity as well and give the best when I have the chance.”

Hasn't moaned despite knowing full well he's second choice and despite the slaughtering he gets from some fans. Played a solid backup to Alisson in the league in the title winning season and was the hero in the Super Cup.

Won't get into anything too personal, but I sincerely hope that he's seen as third choice, with Kelleher as the first replacement for Alisson. If Adrian is our second choice, I'd find it absolutely bizarre and disappointing - even Kamil Grabara is far better, having been one of the best goalkeepers in the Danish league the past couple of seasons. Adrian seems a nice lad and positive influence, but I've said it countless times that he's absolutely miles from the required level, even as a sub.

Rated far more by his manager and coach and team mates than some fans it seems  ;D

If Kelleher is going on loan, then he’ll get a fair few games too.

Seems to be well liked around the spot. Probably one for the dressing room, more than anything.

This happening? Haven't been following the rumour mill lately. Either way, can't see Adrian being #2 next season.

You talk about the slaughtering he gets from some fans - I'll never understand the lauding he gets from others. We mostly won games in spite of him, not at all because of him in the start of the 19-20 season. That includes his 'hero' performance in the Super Cup, where he gave away a needless pen. He was then atrocious in February/March of that season, where his mistakes directly contributed to us going out of both the FA Cup and more importantly the Champions League in short order.

Last season he was hopeless, leading to Kelleher leapfrogging him. Will never understand why so many think he's good enough when there's so much evidence that he's nowhere near.

Don't think he'll be #2 after getting bombed out for Kelleher last season. It would make no sense at all.

I generally like Klopp's loyalty to players, but it really wouldn't make sense if Adrian is seen as first replacement for Alisson. Would be asking for trouble. Can only imagine that Kelleher is staying.

Doesn't deserve to be lauded but James Pearce has just confirmed he's expected to be third choice behind Ali and Kelleher, despite having the option to go back to Spain where he would probably get more game time. I doubt he'll play more than 4/5 more games for us in the cups now.

Well, it's a new contract and I suppose it's on far reduced terms, with an eye to helping others around Kirkby. I'd see it similarly to when we gave Kolo a new deal.

Really doubt he'll play at all, unless there's an injury to Kelleher. No reason to go back to Spain as he's likely settled and is on the verge of retirement realistically.

As a 3rd choice I'm alright with it, wouldn't be the smartest decision to loan Kelleher out IMO, even though it'd be nice for him to see regular football. They have big trust in Kelleher though and must be happy with the progression he's made. Interesting to see how much time CK or Adrian get in goal next season, ideally Alisson will be available for every game but wouldn't bank on it after the last couple of years. He's only ever played Alisson once in the domestic cup games, so I wonder who'll be fancied in those if we're not playing someone like United which was the one he played Alisson in. Would like to think it'd be Kelleher given the fact he's more in need of the minutes than Adrian.

I think what you're saying is true, but it was the right decision not to keep Karius round, even if he's still on the books. I couldn't bare imagining how nervous the ground would be if he ever played for us again, especially shortly after the Champions League final. I'd fear for him even if he made a fuck up in a game we're a few goals ahead in in the last minute, he'd be fucking slaughtered for it.

He screwed up several times, the last one (which wasn't even his fault) was just big enough to obscure the rest. As for this, absolutely fine with Adrian being third choice. I was really impressed with Kelleher this year and I hope he gets some proper game time in the cups next season.

As he is staying as #3, surely his extension is effectively like the Manninger signing a couple of years back - not likely to play but older experienced pro around the place.

if Kelleher is staying, then yes, that’s good.

Shouts for Karius as 3, or even no one as some plonker said in the transfer thread are so childish.

We may not think having a ‘good teammate’ is important, but the manager and team do. And having a 3rd choice experienced goalie is something Klopp has always either had or wanted here.

Cant see why there are any problems here.

He's great to have in the dressing room. Highly experienced to help with Kelleher's development and now on a contract that if he did eventually want to leave, we might get a bit of cash.

Was more of a second choice last year was he not? Was in the squad for 43 games out of 53 games, aside for a brief period midseason where Kelleher seemed to get the nod. Certainly finished the season as our back up keeper, but can't remember if Kelleher was injured.
