I think its worth taking into consideration the English game was playing catch up with the rest of Europe for about ten years and the cup is harder to win in the Champions League era.
Yes but its also worth bearing in mind that, under the rules Bob had to contend with, Man U woudn't have even qualified for the competition when the tramp won one of his 2 CL's. ;)
Oh you English are SO superior aren't you? Well, would you like to know where you'd be without US the good old U.S. of A. to protect you? I'll tell you. The smallest fucking province in the Russian Empire, that's where! If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking German, singing, "Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles!"

Wouldn't surprise me one bit.  I think his aim was to take 3 european cups.  3 european cups looks increasingly unlikely.  However, the way they have won their 20th title, literally without a challenge is a great way to go out.

I still feel there may be nothing in the story, but if he does go, it wouldn't particularly shock me.

it would be like the dawning of a new golden age for humanity.

I think this rumour has substance, it's been coming the past year or two.
I have a feeling Jose has been putting all that chelsea talk out so that man utd would be forced to move.
True,he's had a stand named after him and a statue unveiled outside the ground.

I did think last summer that the Van Persie transfer was a retirement present considering his age and injury record.

First up the champions of Latvia, then the champions of Iceland, next up the champions of Austria in the quarter final.....

Save for the odd side in the Champions League you are playing quality opposition from the best leagues in Europe as soon as you hit the knockout rounds and even before that the group could be the end of you, see United and Dortmund last year and Chelsea City this year.

Pretty sure Latvian Champions didn't really feature in it so that's a little disingenuous. Moreover, the standard of football across Europe was far more even and less centralised in big economies and within those big economic countries, less centralised in a few power-brokering teams. So in fact, the European Cup back then was a far more even ground for competition, at a different time in football, with less money in it, less technology, less travel and so on. It's pretty pointless to compare all in all. About the most sensible thing you can say is that it is difficult to win that trophy at any stage*, and anyone who has won two, no matter how long it took them to win them, did pretty well.

*Except for Madrid's first five, which were obviously a complete shit-show.

We'd have four as well. Thing is when United fans whinge about it I agree with them but say tough shit, you should have been better in the 70/80's also they profited from the financial windfall in the game in the 90's, they came good at the right time. That and a brilliant manager has sustained them. Would like to see it end soon.

In fairness as happy as I am if he does retire, it won't affect United too much. A fantastic structure has been set at the club for years to come and I can imagine most managers will be able to walk into the job and pick up where the previous one left off.
Just got to hope some one comes in and rocks the boat, Mourinho doing what he's done at Madrid.

I don't see that happening as United don't have individually bright players as do clubs such as Real Madrid or Barca. Ferguson has the ability to bring out the best in his players.
One day, people will hopefully look back and say "I was there son. I was there the year that Spurs won nothing again."
