This is definitely the intuitive starting 11. Our best players in their best positions except for maybe Aspas. Definitely one of my new favorites, but have we seen him playing wide?

Either way, I'm expecting to see Joe Allen at attacking mid, pushing Coutinho to the flank, where they can pin him to the line and punish him for being both small and quintessentially un-British.

agreed. Which is why i was thinking Aspas may be played behind Sturridge in the center, with Coutinho on the right/left wing, and Sterling on the opposite.

I've only seen Aspas in the centre, and i know that sturridge likes to drift a lil deep sometimes to get involved with the through balls, possibly allowing Aspas to drag defenders when he pushes up, Allen comes in late and BANG...or something..

I'd be tempted to let these lads come on to us a bit more and sit deeper and try to hit them on the counter with Raheem, Asspass, Coutinho and Henderson (on the left) in the way that we did little later on in the season.

Stoke will be fully prepared to set out the low-block against us on the first day of the season to grind out a 0-0 and try to play quick balls on the break like they have done. If they're trying to play it on the deck a bit more, why not let them, cannot imagine they'll be that good at it yet, and try to force it on the counter, then manipulate possession more if/when we take the lead.

Can't help but be filled with abject terror nonetheless, of another drawn opening day misery fest. We have such a soft opening sequence of games (by our usual standards), it'd be severely disheartening to begin with less than 3 points.

It's my birthday this week and what a present! Football is back and I'm excited as hell!

Really do think we could do these 3 or 4 nil, always hated stoke but give Pulis a shred of credit his teams could defend well due to that horrendous style of football they played. I expect to see something similar from them at this stage of their managerial swop over but the team we have now really should be more than enough for Hughes first game in charge.

3 points and top of the table by the time MOTD is on and I'll be laughing all he night long. Come on you Redmen!

Can't wait for this.

I know it's an early kick-off, but I reckon I'm going to be drinking bevvies a plenty!

It's about time we got a win against these.

Went to this fixture last season, and other than the Arsenal & Villa games it was the worst to watch. Stoke parked the bus and we just couldn't break them down. Suarez was getting battered and then ended up getting booked for a very shit dive. He couldn't quite out-fox Huth, after being fouled all game. Our front three was completed with Suso & Sterling, who weren't the best pick for a game against Stoke. after 90 minutes of dominating possession, the scoreline ended as it had begun and their fans celebrated the 0-0 like they'd won the league.

I think we are better equipped now.

If Sturridge is match fit, I feel that him Aspas, Coutinho & Henderson should be our "front 4" - with Lucas & Ste behind. Ibe has a shout at playing too I think, he has been very sharp in pre-season. A good team there I think, although I hope Philippe doesn't get targeted to much.

I don't know how Stoke will line up, but PoP said earlier they are playing a bit more openly so hopefully that will work in our favour. Then again, I can see this Stoke team becoming like Hughes' Blackburn. They were shite, but very good at injuring your players.

Think we are going to need a dose of luck which we've lacked in these sort of fixtures in the past, grab a goal and get a 1-0 win. A win is a win, and it is very difficult to get a pretty win against a team like Stoke.

Either way, whatever the result is - lets go out and support the lads.
It can't be as bad as last season's opener*, so lets all enjoy it.

*It can't be, can it?

Unbelievably excited for this! ;D

Would love to start with a win for the first time in 5 years?! (is that right?)

I personally think due to our lack of options in the final third (especially on the wings) and the manager being very open about wanting to see Coutinho in the middle I wouldn't be surprised at all if we line up more like the below than a traditional 4-3-3

                         Mignolet

Johnson    Toure    Agger    Enrique

                       Lucas
          Gerrard           Allen

                     Coutinho

           Aspas              Sturridge

With Ibe and Sterling coming off the bench in case they're needed

Probable lineup by redan, but not too strong. And the bench does not look mighty either with the likes of  Sterling, Borini, Ibe, Hendo, Alberto, Kelly, Wisdom to look forward to if needed.

We are 1 or 2 marquee players short, with or without Suarez.

Thank fuck the footies back! Have a great feel of confidence going into this season, Suarez or no Suarez our attacking options are far more exciting compared to this time last year. Hope we put 5 past them but 3 points is all that matters.

With Ibe and Sterling coming off the bench in case they're needed

I think this will be the team aswell

we need to buy more attackers for the bench

our first 11 is good but we lack depth

how many players do we need to buy ?
the number seems to be increasing as we sell more players

Thanks to Hinesy and Harinder for their previews! Great writing as ever!

I hope we steamroller these bunch of oatcake munching troglodytes and put all the naysayers in their place!

Some say that the game has changed. Some say it'll never be the same again. But I for one am as excited as I was when I was 10 years old waiting for the season to start...maybe even more so! Only four more sleeps to go! ;) ;D 8)

Very simple. I honestly see stoke as one of the biggest games of the season. After man u and everton this is the one i always want to win solely after 2008/09. Just can't wait. Would love a nice early 4-0

Can anyone help regarding a ticket query. I've bought a membership and want to try and buy tickets tomorrow online but I haven't received the membership card. How would I receive the tickets?

Will depend on whether our players can get their shooting boots on and whether Begovic decides whether this is one of those games where he is going to have a blinder. I think with Toure and Mignolet in the squad, we are more equipped to deal with them than last season. although a lot depends on whoever partners Toure.

and Sabu we missed you  :wave
