Gini was a close contest to Keita for motm for me. He was brilliant in every and what ever space he was supposed to be occupying. Did superb covering Huddersfield's attacks and he was always making a two to defend against them.
Gini is a gem.

Feel like for a CM/DM he played fairly well as a false 9 in terms of general play. He wasn't awful, but obviously lacking in that striking instinct and positional awareness.

He did the job asked of him to the best of his ability, Klopp carries the blame if he wasn't good enough (which he would). Damning indictment on other squad players who should be in a better position to adapt and play the role such as Sturridge and Shaqiri who haven't got the will or energy to do it.

Let's face it Firmino is possibly one of the world's best at it so a difficult act to follow.

Hard to argue a forward in that position doesn’t make an impact.
We created very few chances to be honest especially if you take out the two big chances at the end after we did have a central striker on the pitch 
It was a bizarre selection and sticking with it for 75 minutes compounded the error

It was fairly clear Gini was fading in what influence he had in the first half so I'm a bit surprised we persisted with it so long. His biggest failing in that role is that he seems to have no turn of speed, just very one paced and not a particularly quick pace. Keita has some speed, although he wouldn't have held the ball up as well.

But he was doing work so that Mo and Sadio didn't. He is not a forward. He is unselfish in midfield let alone as a forward. Did you see his dummy for Milner's shot? A forward would not have done that.

But the fact he was a downgrade on Bobby offensively was not the problem for us. Our midfield opened up space for them and invited them in. Our strikers could not score. They should have scored more. We had no width down the right on attack. Once they brought on a second wingback on their right we had no width really.

Gini did a decent job and played the role Klopp wanted, even though it was the first time he plays there for us with limited time to train if at all. We were missing a Gini/Keita in midfield to stamp some control in midfield.

Why he is targeted as a big reason for the team losing is beyond me.

I think also that Keita is not very experienced further forward. Gini is.

Keita was not very inspiring playing in the front 3 before. He likes to attack from deeper where he has places to move into. He can hold onto the ball, but not as good as Gini standing still.

It was not ideal having Gini there, but I don't think that Keita would have made much difference to the outcome.

Agreed. I thought we were really good as a unit up front. Pressed well, transitioned well and systematically didn't miss Firmino too much. I think any of the other choices to replace Firmino (Origi, Sturridge, Shaqiri) would have broken those aspects to varying levels so I was largely impressed with Gini.

On any other day we score 2-4 goals...

Think you’re being generous about our first 75 minutes here in terms of what we actually created relative to the amount of time we had in their final third (which was significant) - our attacking set up didn’t really work at all after we got to their final third for me ... but different views of the same match happen I guess

Those were all OK chances before Firmino was introduced, but the way I see it, they were not chances you would bet your entire season on.

We needed to create better chances that is something we can control with our overall talent across the squad. Players like Gerrard or Messi or Ronaldo who can consistently score in those high pressure situations from difficult chances are few and far between. I don't think this club will ever have control in bringing in those types of players when needed. Those types of players just randomly end up here every once in a while. And our trophy success shouldn't depend entirely on variance.

Yes I tend to agree. When you are a good side, every game will have 'decent' chances that don't go in; when you lose those tend to be pointed at as evidence that you could have won or got (more) goals, if only they had all gone in, when really they are more part of the background, something all games have before the really meaningful chances are counted.

I'd say only the Mo chance at the end really counts as a genuine meaningful missed opportunity. The others were just par for the course.

Not blaming Mo, these things happen to even the best players, like Hazard hitting the post the other week. And it wasn't as easy as it looked. But if there was one 'moment' where fortune could have favoured us...that was the one

We needed him back in midfield breaking up play or crowding out Messi .It went on too long last night , he should have been brought back sooner.Fabinho was left exposed a lot and was dragged from pillar to post .Everytime messi turned Fabinho Gini should have been there snapping at him .It is the only way to stop him , double up on him or cut off his supply.
