How did you rate this World Cup in comparison to others and what are your favourite memories?

Originally Colombia was awarded the 13th World Cup, but the South American country had to throw in the towel because of financial reasons in 1983. Mexico made sure the cup stayed in the western hemisphere when they took on the responsibility on short notice to host the greatest event in sport and thus became the first nation to do so twice. A horrific tragedy struck Mexico in September 1985 only eight months before the tournament started when around 20,000 people died in an earthquake. Once again the tournament was in jeopardy, but the stadiums were not affected. The country picked up the pieces and went on to stage a fine tournament despite all the obstacles.

The World Cup once again changed its competition schedule. The two-phase groupstage format used since 1974 was now dropped and replaced by the knock-out format. In Spain 1982 the second phase groupstage contained only three teams of four groups leaving one team inactive and unable to control its own destiny in the final game. In Mexico the four best third placed teams would join the six groupwinners and runners-up into the KO-stage round of 16. The matches in Mexico were played at high altitude and at difficult hours of the day. Kick-off was at noon and 4:00pm in broiling mid-day sun to get optimal TV-audience world-wide.

The hosts brought back topscorer Hugo Sanchez from Spanish football to lead the attack on home soil, but "Hugol" spent most of the time complaining to the referee and received unnecessary bookings. Mexico still advanced to the quarterfinal where they lost on penalties to West Germany, but it was a creditable overall showing by the hosts.

West Germany like France and Brazil kept faith in ageing superstars. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Michel Platini and Zico all felt they had the ability to shine in one more World Cup, but only Platini came remotely close to old standard. Rummenigge and Zico struggled with knee-problems and rarely played full games where as Platini lifted his game in the KO-stage as the opposition got tougher. France and Brazil met in an epic do-or-die quarterfinal in Guadalajara. A number of legendary players in their thirties left blood, sweat and tears on the field for two full hours before France emerged as winners on penalties even if Platini missed from the penalty spot. Zico missed in regulation time. France then met West Germany in a semifinal replay of 1982, but this game had none of the drama and action of four years earlier as the Germans once again came out on top.

The Soviet Union, Denmark and Belgium, the latter after a slow start, were other teams who impressed. Especially the former two looked like title contenders early on and showed impressive attacking strength. The Soviet Union, or Dynamo Kiev plus Dasaev in goal, played a fast paced mordern game with Belanov up front causing all sorts of problem. Denmark with dynamite-duo Laudrup and Elkjær got through the first round with three wins, but vulnerable defences were exposed in the second round as Denmark crashed to four-goal-Butragueño's Spain and the Soviets messed up against Belgium in a seven-goal thriller that could have swung their way with a little bit of luck.

Luck was not on England's side either when the referee ignored the handball goal scored by the man the 1986 World Cup has become synonymous with: Diego Armando Maradona. Never has one man dominated an entire tournament such as Maradona in 1986. Coach Bilardo built his whole team around this stocky figure who was determined to redeem himself after Spain '82. His solo-goal against England brought back memories of what football used to be like among kids in the streets and parks ages ago. One player running circles around others. Maradona did this in the World Cup knock-out stage in the most high-profile games. Argentina won a well-deserved title after a classic final against West Germany. Maradona's personal contribution in this World Cup was five goals and five assists. Burruchaga, Valdano and Ruggeri were other key players in this team.

It wasn't the best of World Cups for the unfancied nations. Iraq and Canada made their debut, but made little impression. South Korea ended last in Argentina's group, but showed off some impressive long-range shooting. Africa though continued their improvement and wrote history when Morocco became the first country from that region to advance to the second round - they even won their group which also contained England, Poland and Portugal.

England's campaign looked disastrous before Gary Lineker scored a hat-trick in the final first round game against Poland. No goals scored, captain Bryan Robson sent home with a shoulder injury and Ray Wilkins sent off against Morocco. Things suddenly turned for England and Paraguay were brushed aside with ease before Maradona awaited. Lineker's six goals made him the first ever English topscorer in a World Cup. That was some consolation.

Portugal and Poland both disappointed. Zbigniew Boniek now played deeper for the Poles, but the team lacked overall individual talent which had graced Poland over the previous three World Cups. Portugal became the first country in history to beat West Germany in a qualifying game, but stumbled after beating England in the first round group's opening game.

But 1986 was all about Maradona.

Was 86 the one where someone from Uruguay got sent off in the first minute for a foul against Scotland ?

Really enjoyed this one: A few  random highlights were

Maradona of couse , loved the goal against Belgium and his domination of games was amazing to watch .

Belgians had 2 decent players Claesen and Enzo Scifo ( red boots)

Demark had Michael Laudrup and Olsen

Soviet Union and Rats and Zavarov

Germans had Brehme , Voller and Matthaus

John Barnes cameo against Argentina

Josimar - Right back for Brazil , Scored 2 amazing goals ,  Careca and Socrates played but this wasnt vintage Brazil

The Big 'Netted' goals , wernt that common at  that time

my first world cup sticker book !

Saint & Greavsie changed their them tune i think to the 86 world cup one
He'll win the league in the next 3 years. Quote me on that.
Quote me on this, but come next season he'll be great for us. Just needs to remove the walking headless chicken next to him

Do people remember the brilliant Russian keeper of that era Rinat Dasayev? But apart from him they had quality and for those who do not remember this Russia side these where some of the players,

Anatoliy Demyanenko, Vasiliy Rats, Sergei Aleinikov, Hennadiy Litovchenko, Alexei Mikhailichenko & Igor Belanov.

Savage team and as someone pointed out these boys couldscore from anywhere and i mean anywhere.

Cracking World Cup. Great atmosphere, loads of drama, great goals and the best player of all time in his prime.

Batista was the Uruguayan sent off early I think. Weren't they playing Scotland - kicking lumps out of them, pulling their hair, and all the time Souness was sat on the bench. I'm not Scottish but I was sitting there willing him to get on and sort them out. I also remember Ian St John screaming at Steve Nicol for missing a sitter in that game.

That USSR team was tasty - Belanov and Dasayev were ace. Brazil v France was a belter, and Josimar's goal against Norn Iron stands out.

Still the only World Cup I can remember which was won by one man. Maradona was like a phantom. But Barnesy nearly saved that quarter final for England.

Good final too…

Perhaps you'll like this clip then - a world cup qualifier described as the best game Denmark's ever played, against USSR in -85: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwXo7g9_EFg&feature=related
second half: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDSnTKANru8

Read a very long article in the Guardian a while back about that generation of danish players, very interesting. I'm too young to remember this tournament, but Luadrup was one of my favourite players growing up.

i think bats was the french keeper though i`m not sure.
it was a great world cup, i thought it was better than 82.
82 had a wierd set up i seem to remember, wasnt set up like tournaments these days with last 16, quarter final, semi final etc etc
england went out without losing a game and after beating the french who ended up in the semi`s against germany.
f##king confusing.

My first proper WC and the best to date! Magnificent stadiums, atmosphere and awesome collection of stars on display. Fuck the WCs in europe or Japan, the mexicans and latinos showed you how to create the best atmosphere at a football tournament!

I vaguely watched the '82 WC but saw the games (notably Brazil's) a long time after and I was buzzing to see the likes of Socrates, Zico (my football hero) and Falcao back in action. This time they had a fully fit Careca up front, one of my all time favourite players. Add to that the likes of Josimar, Edinho, Branco and Muller coached by Tele Santana from '82 this was a team to go all the way.

Brazil-France was just fuckin breathtaking. End to end stuff. Brazil were superb, Careca scored a cracker and then later missed a really good chance. Fair play to the French though, Platini, Rocheteu, Stopyra, Tigana all played well and and that fench hippy goalie Joel Bats was on fire that day. I remember the crowd going mental when Zico came on and then he set up a brilliant chance with his first touch! But my heart sunk when Zico missed that pen  :'( And Michel Platini (not the twat we see today) showed what a true gentlemen he was on the pitch by consoling Zico after that. It was a touching moment and a true example of sportsmanship at a time when the stakes were so high.
The penalty shoot out was heart breaking. Socrates and Cesar fumbling, then Stopyra's penalty was controversial as it hit the post and went back in after rebounding off Carlos. But Zico scored! I was just a kid but it broke my heart and still to this day, I hate Fernandez, the frog-eating bastard  :no

Oh, and rest of the WC was ace too  ;D

Yeah it was a weird set up. After the Grp stage there was a second 3-team group stage of which the top team went straight through to the semis. Brazil beat every team they played in the first group stage then destroyed Argentina in the second group phase but went out cos they lost to Italy who didn't win a single game until the second stage, having gotten through courtesy of 3 draws! Jammy bastards

I remember at school we were always trying to re-create those Josimar goals by whacking a plastic ball as hard as you could and seeing if it caught in the wind and moved around a bit before going beyond the keeper......ah, good times.

This was the first World Cup I really remember and has been the best one since.

This World Cup for me was all about Preben Elkjaer, Michael Laudrup, Josimar and the resulting attempted recreations on the school playing fields.  Unforgettable times  :)

Came across this clip on youtube, and thought I'd post here seeing as Laudrup was one of the players of the tournament.

Came across this clip on youtube, and thought I'd post here seeing as Laudrup was one of the players of the tournament.

One of the best midfielders I've ever seen, wonderful player.

Edit: How do you embed a clip from youtube into the post?

Fantastic player, who we nearly signed on two occasions I believe only for the deals to fall through at the last minute. Mind you we didn't do too badly without him.   ;D

Yes, the first time was when he was still playing in Denmark as a teenager, but he got a much better offer from Juventus and went there instead. The second time was around the time he left for Barcelona, don't remember what year exactly, think it was in -88.

I am a bit too young to remember much of Kenny and Beardsley - we did indeed seem to do fine without Laudrup back then! - but we sure could've used him for much of the 90's...

My only memory from this WC was the little mexican guy top in kinder eggs
"You have to admire animals. Hamster spun round in a wheel three times bigger than him and abruptly lands on his back. Then just gets up and carries on as if nothing happened! If that was a human he'd be helicoptered to hospital, off work for 6 months have back issues for 20 years and then start legal proceedings against the wheels owner"

The only world cups I can remember watching with any interest were 82, 86 and 90. All great for different reasons. The standout from 86 was clearly Maradona. I also recall Spain battering a highly regarded Denmark team 5-1. Can't say I've ever watched any world cup since 1990. It's all shite, isn't it?

Also remember this game being quite memorable.

By the way, I should tell you that I haven’t had a chance to shower while making my way up here, my balls are extra vinegary.

Fancy sticking that Lineker goal ahead of Maradona's goal against Belgium. Patriotic nonsense.
