I'd suggest not winding the staff up though and asking them to make it as hot as possible.

He's used to Phals that aren't hot enough even when asking for it hot. Don't think he's doing that again in there.

Decent food anyway.

Venue: Tokyou Noodle Bar
Location: Berry Street, Liverpool (Bombed out church area)
Food: Wow, simply wow. Very cheap, but defo not cheerful. Very authentic food on lovely china plates/bowls. Massive portions and at about £4-5 per plate. Amazing
Drink: About £1.60 for a premium beer. I kid you not.
Tab: (For Four hungry lads after a session in the Fly in the Loaf) £29 with a round of beers. This consisted of 4 beers, 4 mains, 2 rice and 2 portions of spring rolls and water.
Overall: Gets very busy, luckily we got table straight away but it was still chocker. Highly recommend.
Score: 4.9 out of 5 and I will be going back soon.

Anyone tried London Carriage Works on Hope St? Pricey, I know, but it looks intriguing and I've heard good things.

Been there a few times Jon, but not for over a year.  I thought it had gone down hill last time we went.  Superfuous overcomplication at the expense of taste and simple flavours that go together.  You might want to get a review from someone who has been more recently before deciding.

If you are looking for a lunch venue then I'd recommend the Panoramic.  The food was great when we went, it is much better value at lunchtime, and even if the food doesn't knock you out the view is superb.

The steak frites at the Mal were very decent, by the way. And meeting Ian Brown was the clincher ;)

Isn't there a higher one in the NatWest building in London. It was on Top Gear once. Vertigo something isn't it?

Panoramic is Britain’s tallest restaurant, located on the 34th floor of Liverpool’s West Tower, reaching 100m above sea level. Panoramic offers 360° views of Liverpool, the Welsh hills and on a clear day you can even see Manchester’s Hilton hotel. Panoramic couples fine cuisine with unparalleled intimate surroundings.

Cool, must have higher ceilings than the NatWest one as that was on 45th floor if I remember correctly from Top Gear.
Would love to go that Panoramic but looks very price.

Mate, unless it is summer go for Sunday lunch.  It's much cheaper and in winter you get a much better "show".  We ate to the backdrop of a blue sky and a shimmering Mersey, had desert to a lovely sunset over Birkenhead (that's a googlewhack if ever there was one) and then sipped cocktails as the lights came on all over Liverpool.

We had a cracking breakfast in the Tavern on Smithdown Rd before the match yesterday. Great selection.

Tavern is lovely John. Went there just before Christmas, very nice indeed. Even if at night it looks like it's lit with one fucking candle!

Not sure if the Eastern Diner on Allerton Road has been covered. Well, we made the same mistake 3 years on the trot tonight but this time I swear I will not return. For starters....the floor is a grime hole and the seats look like someone has mixed smeg and snot as party piece. The food was met with a 50/50 equal result but believe me the chicken chow mein is water blown chicken that tastes like.......well.... water. It was the most bland experience since .....well..... last year.

The lager is warm and tasteless.

As I was eating this shite remembering why I'd said to ar kid we're not fuckin coming here next year and making a mental note to remind myself not to come back next year I wondered why the fuck people were coming in for a take away. (aye who said men can't multi task).

My mother likes to go for her birthday because we can all get round a big round table, but next year I'll be taking a circular saw to next door fence and she can plonk her chair round that.

Fuck that, just don't bother.

I've had the business lunch at the Eastern Diner (or the Beanshoot as it was) two or three times. Thought it was alright. Nothing amazing, but cheap and decent enough. Far better places on Allerton Rd, but I guess that goes without saying.

If it was the Beanshoot it would have been before the carpets that looked like the Falklands task force marched over them were laid.

Cheer John,  having lived on Allerton Road for well over ten years we've never been.  But we have building work being done at the mo meaning we can't use most of the downstairs of the house.  Which we are using as an excuse to eat out a lot ;)  We were thinking of trying Eastern Diner this week.  Looks like you have saved us. Back to Pod then I reckon.

Sekanda on Allerton Rd (again) last night. Completely full so don't assume you can walk in for a meal, book in advance.

Once again the food was brilliant.....there's not enough said on here about the place. If you like indian food this is a must visit.

You don't really need a starter as the main courses are superb but all of them are lovely.

Don't chose a basic tandoori dish, sample the spicy chicken chilli masala or chicken sondhia while you are there, you won't be disappointed. Of course hit the madras if your palate allows.

The mixed grill is also a good recommendation (with a vindaloo sauce side dish).

It seems to be fully licensed now but we took & drank our own ale all night (like we've always done) and the waiters didn't comment.

I've walked in a few times, sometimes about a 10 minute wait munching on the bombay mix but they always get you sat down. They do a buffet on a sunday which is alright, it's only about a tenner a head I think and you can just keep asking for more curry, it's all you can eat. We always took our own ale as well, last time we were there they waiter said they're licensed now, but they still weren't bothered.

The Brasserie at The Mal in Prince's Dock is decent. They have a locally-sourced selection and a reasonable choice of fish etc, but we both had a steak-frites; they pride themselves on their steaks, supplied by Donald Russell from Aberdeenshire. The frites were hand-cut and we had a simple green salad on the side, but I always think you can tell a lot about a restaurant when you ask them to do something basic and unfussy. I can't recall the wine we drank (something Spanish and red, but the exact bottle escapes me). Service was excellent; friendly and efficient, but unobtrusive. They could tell it was a special occasion so they left us pretty much alone until we wanted them.

All in all, recommended: naturally, any restaurant at which the Sommelier compliments me on the beauty of my companion, is going to get a good review (even if that amounted to stating the bleedin' obvious...) and while it was starting to fill up when we left with a lot of (very) overdressed women (wannabe WAG types) out for a big night, it's also the kind of venue you can have a relaxed, intimate meal with good food and wine. Total bill was around £60-70 I'd guess? Very reasonable.

I've not been to the Carriageworks for over a year mate, and not been to Simply Heathcotes or #60 for even longer.  I have Hope St hotel vouchers though so will be chacking out the Carriageworks again soon.

My tip would be to give the Panoramic a whirl.  My brother took me and the mrs for lunch on my birthday and the food was great but the view was better.

Other options to consider with your three above are The Side Door on Hope Street and Deli Fonseca on Stanley Street.

Hello all,

I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to Liverpool restaurants these days having moved to the big smoke 9 years ago ;(

However, I'm back home visiting mum, and thought it'd be nice to take her out for something excellent. I was thinking about The Carriageworks, but it hasn't been reviewed on here for over a year, and obviously things change.

Has anyone been recently? What about Number 60? Or the other option is Simply Heathcotes, which hasn't been reviewed on here, and I don't even know any of my friends that have been.

Any ideas or suggestions massively welcome. Cheers, Dan

Heathcotes is not what it used to be and is struggling to attract the same type of customers since the restaurant bar and grill opened, and a few others that are now open on Brunswick / Castle street.

All that said, I still love the place. Always get a warm welcome, staff know how to do their job. The food is simple modern British. Good vlaue for money.

Can't go wrong really.

Pardon my ineptitude JRC, but has Heathcotes opened a bar and grill somewhere else or is that what the restaurant is now?

Sorry mate, the Restaurant Bar and Grill on Brunswick street (About 50m) from Heathcotes opend about 18 months ago and has took a lot of buisness away from Heathcotes.

The have spent a fortune on the decor, very pretentious if you ask me, but i have only ever been in for drinks.

It was certainly casual for lunch, I assume the same for evenings to be honest, though I have yet to try it in the evening.  I think I'll give it a go this summer.

Nice one.  Is the £15 offer on for the rest of Feb?  And did you book or just turn up?

With the vouchers I've got and the offer you got I reckon I can get a free dinner at the carriageworks. Which would be rather nice.

Went to Italian Club Fish last night and I must say I thought it was outstanding. Six of us went and all of us were very impressed, will be going back in the near future for sure. Try the monkfish special if it's still on.

Just wondering if anyone's been to Host yet? Heard very good things about it.

A mate of mine has been to Host and said it was great and good value.
Just been on the website and it looks good - even if they are lying about the origins of the name. The area south of Houston in New York is known as SoHo  - unsurprisingly the area to the North is referred to as NoHo.

Not quite sure how you get Host from that.
