Sadly, it's being reported everywhere that he's lost out on the Ballon d`Or to Messi. Irresponsible of them to leak it but am glad it got out so he doesn't waste his time and energy travelling to the ceremony.

Seen yesterday some random site saying it is being reported in Spain. Odds slashed on Messi winning it since.

I doubt he's wasting much energy. If he doesn't win, he'll get recognition for being the second best player in the world. I'd imagine that's a pretty decent ego boost.

It was reported in the Mirror, the Daily Fail, Football 365, and it's been all over the Spanish press since Monday. Twitter was the last place I looked last night to see how many blue-ticked journalists were buying into the leak.

I mean I love Messi as a football player, he is the best I have ever seen. But how he is winning this above Virgil is absolutely beyond me and stinks of the same shite that saw him win the player of the tournament for the 2014 World Cup.

They all seem to be quoting the ever reliable Mundo Deportivo paper in Spain, so.....

Edit - read the original article from them, it seems it's all based on rumours that a team from France Football (who award it) traveled to Barca to interview Messi.

I don't think it's that big an injustice if Messi wins. He's dragging Barcelona to trophies and still scoring a ludicrous amount

i wouldnt waste my time being bitter over Van Dijk not winning this as much as he deserves it

it really isnt that important to me, i was kinda happy when Michael Owen won it but hardly about to crack open a bottle of champers, if he hadnt have won it i wouldnt have cared

This is for the standout performer for the calendar year just gone. Virgil has played a much bigger role in a Champions League win which involved one of the competitions biggest ever comebacks, incidentally in a game where Messi was unable to get his team going. League wins for them are a given, they also lost their cup final in a fairly embarrassing manner. Combine that with VVD's role in amassing a ridiculous 97 points and I personally think he has been the best for that time period.

Not particularly arsed either (enough to type that message above hah!) but he is the kind of person that won't let it get to him anyway. As Craig says, could all just be rumours.

From an individual players perspective though, a nice award to win where your peers recognise you as the greatest in the world.

Nice if VVD won it but it's subjective and irrelevant really. Owen won it and it was rather a short lived halo moment for him. Messi is brilliant and deserves all he gets, but I bet he'd swap this award for a goal at Anfield last May.

Would hurt though. Putting in a performance worthy of Ballon D'or yet not able to win it for a questionable reason. But awards are like this, it was never fair.

I hope he would be able to put the disappointment behind him quickly and let that spur him to greater heights this season.

Considering that nine times out of ten, an attacking player gets this award, I doubt that he'll lose sleep over it. The last time a defender won it, was cannavaro 13 years ago. It's a great achievement if he wins it, but it's not that big of a deal if he doesn't, it's not like he's up against an unworthy candidate. I mean Messi only scored 50 goals last year, and hasn't scored less than 35 goals since 2008.

I think that leaked thing is fake. Salah in third. He was excellent (statitically our biggest threat) as he has been since he has been here. But he didn't get on podium for his 44 goal season (6th with 188 points), how does 27 goals get you on podium (3rd with 179 points). Also how can 9 point drop increase your position by 3 places
