Thinking of getting a new laptop, never had Acer before any thoughts on this one ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0010X74DM/ref=s9subs_c3_img1-rfc_p?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0K8S0PASKFJJ78DKMZP8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=139042391&pf_rd_i=468294

Seems to cover all bases ? Either that or thinking about a Dell 1530

Anyone have any experience or knowledge of the Dell Studio 15?

Looking into getting one, done a bit of reading round on it and it seems to be a really good laptop.  A bit like the XPS line but with more "everyday" options (4 USB ports, WLED screen option, backlit keyboard option).  Looks stunning (in my opinion) to boot.

Have a look here -

http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1050

loads of opinions on it and some reports from people who actually have one.

I bought a new one at the weekend, a Gateway with Core 2 Duo, 3GB of Ram and, I think, a 200GB hard drive. Haven't used it much yet, but like it so far. Haven't had any issues with Vista either, which has been a pleasant surprise so far. Cost me $600.

Ben what do you think of the £479 model on this page:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Its the cheapest of the packages there and was wondering what you (and others) thought of the specs? I'm not very good on the technical side of things so wasn't sure. Thanks. :)

It depends on what you want it for, it'll probably be fine for everyday multitasking and a smidge of light gaming (it does have dedicated graphics, just not fantastic ones according to popular opinion).  Although I'd pay the £20 extra to up the RAM to 3gig as Vista apparently sucks it up (don't go to 4 however as 32 bit Vista can only utilise 3.5 apparently).

As I said before, it looks to have all the makings of a fantastic laptop and (in my mind) looks the business to boot.  May be a bit more mexpensive than some if you shop around, but if you have to look at it everyday then surely it's worth a bit extra to have something pleasing to the eye.

Yeah mate I don't use it for a great deal of things but still want something quite fast and reliable. I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 from years ago and when switching it on it can take up to 5/10 minutes to start up and if running something like limewire it completely slows down.

That should be fine for you then (although if you want it to be "quite fast" I'd definately reccomend the 3 Gb of memory).  Amazingly, I've also got an Inspiron 6000 at the moment and I know exactly what you mean (hasn't even got a duo processor and only 1 Gb of RAM) as turning the thing on can take upto 10 minutes, it is over 3 years old though.

Think mine has even less than 1GB. :D

So basically you'd suggest the £479 model but adding another £20 to it by taking it up to 3GB?

Yeah, should do you and come in at under £500 (or £530 if you want it a nice colour).

There were some good deals in the Toshiba shop at Cheshire Oaks last time I was there.

Looking for a laptop for my final year of uni but not really sure which make/model to go for and where the best place is to get it from.

My budget is around £500 so looking for fairly decent processor, about 2GB RAM, fairly decent HD size and other standard things such as DVD R/W and wireless capabilites you would expect for paying such an amount.

Any suggestions?

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but Aldi always seem to sell some decent laptops (and desktops) for under £500. 3GB RAM 250GB HD etc. All of them by Medion, a German computer manufacturer. Don't sell them all year round though, only as special offers for a month or so i think.

should help i think.

Just bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 2gb memory, 160gb HDD, custom cover, dual core Intel processor, Microsoft Office and a laptop case for £400, very pleased with it, my old laptop took a week to turn on, this is up and running within 3 minutes

Sounds first cheap vict! Sounds like you got a cracking deal. Better than the 700 notes for the stupido 15 that i just bought. Still waiting for delivery like. For some reason i thought i'd have it within a few days not the 3 weeks it's estimated to be!

Can anyone provide some advice? I'm going crazyily round in circles trying to find the best one for me!

I was about to buy this when I came across this where the only thing different is it's a couple of inches smaller, but with a £100 saving seems like a good deal.

The problem is I'm quite pedantic with finding the best deal but because my requirements are quite vague, I'm not really sure which one to plump for.

Coincidentally, I actually have that one opened on PC World (overpriced I know - but at least they have some sort of filtering system). Although saying that, it looks as though thats the cheapest place for this model.

Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0Ghz, 2GB RAM, DVD R/W, Wireless etc. all seems pretty decent for £399? Only 120GB HD though. Is there a next model up with a bigger HD and perhaps a software package chucked in?

Yeah 'tis. Would have preferred a 200GB HD but there didn't appear to be any unless you paid a hefty amount more.

Slights doubts with it a being a Samsung, not exactly renowned for laptops, and the pictures don't inspire me, but hopefully it's great in the 'flesh'. ;D

Laptops never look great on pics tho do they, except when Dell blast snazzy covers on them, or Macbooks :D

Doubt you'll fill up 160gb HDD anyway, at least not with meaningful stuff ie when you reach a point you can start deleting stuff you got months ago and have no idea why you kept :P
