That’s another term for a nerve agent.

Most likely novichok a234... which you may remember from Salisbury. Classically they will suffer pin prick pupils an decry low levels of acetylcholineesterase in their body.

The poison may be difficult to detect being in such small amounts, but it’s effects are absolutely a red flag.

He will have lived because they will have given him atropine, which is an excellent way to treat nerve agents. Lucky to be alive right now, he will be lucky to live.

No and it's mind boggling that they persist in doing it. They didn`t think twice about effectively carrying out a chemical weapons attack here. It's absolutely outrageous that they/he seem to get away with it. What's worse, the current POTUS even seems to support them. Can you imagine what Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan even Clinton would do ? It wouldn`t be just to lob out a few 'diplomats'.

My fear is that it will get a whole lot worse. He has no fear of any consequences, because there are essentially no consequences. Syria, Ukraine, Crimea, The Baltic states, it makes no odds. Very very dangerous regime.

They don't. And lets face it, if they really wanted Navalny dead he probably would be. This is very much old-school KBG antics, Putin will love that all of his enemies will live in fear, not just about a bullet to the head but of a daily agonisation about whether something is in your tea.

Can't say I follow Russian politics particularly, but isn't it this guy who's pretty racist in the guise of nationalism/patriotism?

Bit confused why some of the UK press seem to have a love-in for him to be honest when he seems pretty right wing.

Any good reads on this documentary also? I don't have the patience to read subtitles for 90 minutes. Skipped ot the casino bit which was pretty interesting.

Not sure. I just skimmed the Wiki page - I gain the overall impression that given the Russian Overton Window, he might be playing to the audience somewhat. Some of his recent comments (in support of BLM and gay marriage) are very progressive for Russia. But if the reports of his nationalist tendencies are accurate, I am not defending them (even assuming his positioning is tactical - I do not know if this is the case). Maybe that's the only viable anti-Putin option in Russia. Though, even if true, they are not the kind of compromises I would like to make.

Ended up with about 4,000 people according to a Russian journalist that was interviewed (I think on CNN) who was there. He said the 'walk' started off with 800, but it grew to about 4,000 - looked more, I thought.

Live pics on sky news now. Looks to be quite a crowd building but hard to tell from footage. Lots of jostling going on between crowd and police. Sky reporting similar protests are happening in other cities beyond Moscow.

Is there any realistic way Putin loses power ever? Or is it a case that his hands are that grubby now that if he lets go of power he would either end up in prison of hanging from a lamppost, so he has to hang on for his own good?

I think he just loves the power. Putin is probably keeping a lot of men very rich as a means to shore up his position, especially in the army. Most rank and file will do what they are told. I can't see how he is overthrown, unless those men he has made rich decide they have enough power to remove him. I think they're too scared to try myself.

I dunno. You can only make supposition based on the available facts.

You would need someone young, hungry and ruthless to topple him. But like a queen bee, Putin has proven adept at neutralising his rivals before they became a threat. Maybe he's smart enough to know when there's someone in a position to do to him what he's been doing to rivals for years, so he'll have a plan ready to jump ship. But for the time being he has too much support where it counts to be at risk.

Something drastic would have to change inside the Kremlin for his supporters to decide they'd had enough.

Those behind the scenes will only want to see Putin replaced by someone who will continue the status quo. Therefore you'll need more than simple popular support of the people to see Putin removed, and even then little will change in real terms. It will still be a corrupt hole.

They need a model that is at least marginally less corrupt and considerably less confrontational. Putin's key was giving the country an enemy to unite against again.

True, they were one of the last absolute monarchies in Europe, and when they got rid of the monarchy they replaced it with Lenin and Co.
