Regarding the women's today, apparently the taxi was heading somewhere else. Given the time close to 11, the passenger told driver to go to the womens as it was closest thing. Driver seen the vest as they stopped and it went off killing the passenger. Driver hit the steering wheel and windscreen. Car was full of smoke and he seen the smallest light so thought it was the door so started pushing and eventually fell out the car. Someone pulled him away. He has a broken vertebrae, shrapnel wounds and part of his ear missing but is walking.

This is from someone who has spoken to the driver.

There is a video of the Rock Ferry gas explosion going around. Not to say there hasn't been another explosion, but people are jumping to conclusions and using an old video as proof.

I can see the skyline from here and there's no sign of the helicopter over the city just now and I can't find anything on another explosion tonight online.

How do you know there is a standoff?

The reporter says it’s been cordoned off since early today and nothing else.

Ah ok, the earlier one you mean? The one DJ posted which was recently doesn’t say anything about that. Just that it’s cordoned off with police activity.

There is some absolute whoppers making up fake news tonight, all no doubt desperate to feel important.

Mate sent me one an audio recording earlier saying he's spoke to the cab driver, part of his ear ripped off, both ear drums burst, fractures in his back, shock and shrapnel injuries......but he's been released from hospital earlier?!?!  ::)

All very confusing at the moment, lots of rumours and speculation. Hopefully some better details come out tomorrow before work place rumours go big

Latest statement from Merseyside Police:

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: “Following the events of this morning, Sunday 14th November, at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, I want to offer my reassurance.

“While I understand that today’s incident may cause concern in our communities, it should be pointed out that events of this nature are very rare.

“Officers from Counter Terrorism North West are leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police and they will be liaising with our partners at Mersey Fire and Rescue and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital to establish what has taken place.

“Three males have today been arrested in the Kensington area under the Terrorism Act and remain in custody and enquiries remain ongoing.

“Merseyside Police will continue to liaise with community groups, community leaders, partner agencies and individuals in the coming days and weeks to make sure any concerns are addressed and ensuring that we provide the best possible service to local people.

“There will also be an increased and visible police presence on the streets of Merseyside and I would encourage people to engage with my officers and raise any concerns they may have.

“It is also important that, at this very early stage, people do not speculate about what has happened. We will endeavour to update our communities as soon as we are able.

“I would continue to advise people to be vigilant and if they have any concerns to contact police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”

Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan said: "Staff from Mersey Fire and Rescue Service have been working throughout the day and were at the scene within a matter of minutes.

“We will be continuing our partnership with Merseyside Police and Liverpool city council by providing visible reassurance to communities affected and will be knocking on doors to speak to people in the area and check their welfare."

I never thought of that. Imagine how many conclusions will be jumped to on social media if some clown sets off a large firework.

I've noticed sirens tonight, but that's normal here anyway. A few riot vans cruising around too, but apart from that it's pretty quiet here. No sign of the police helicopter over the city either. It was up for ages after the explosion earlier.

From the pictures just now there are about 4 police cars in the street. Now I’m not an experienced counter terrorist negotiation specialist, I just want to make that clear from the start, but I’d guess the street would be flooded if there was actually a stand off taking place with a possible armed man etc.

There was a standoff with man with a knife near me a few weeks back, at one point there were 10+ police cars, a van, 3 armed response 4x4s and a helicopter. Firearms also operate out of unmarked X5’s.

Hopefully the situation in Kenny is calmer and comes to a fast conclusion. At this stage it looks like no innocent lives have been lost and hopefully it stays that way through the night. Cowards.

I know they had armed response there earlier, but can't vouch for now. It's just around the corner from us, but out of our line of sight.

Edit: I'm talking about the Rutland Avenue scene there.

Taking a wild, uneducated and ignorant guess I’d say if the house was linked to an explosive then until they have 100% covered every square milimetre of the place there will be high security and activity until that happens. Hopefully that’s the worst that is going on and nothing more.

Sounds like some residents are now being taken out of the area by the police with overnight bags.

It's crazy.  I've been out for a meal and drinks in the city centre this evening, and despite seeing the police tape by the hospital on the 86 bus I've not heard a damn thing about any other potential danger anywhere. You have to hope it's well contained but the lack of concern amongst city goers is damming.

I've seen the same clip. Horrible viewing and could have done so much more damage had it gone off outside the car. The windscreen blowing off showed the force of the blast

I think it went off correctly but because the driver locked it into the car it contained the blast.

The driver getting out alive and the cowards body left to burn in the vehicle is the best result you could hope for after the device has gone off. Imagine being prepared to end the lives of yourself and the people around you, only to fail miserably and end up being the only victim. It's still created fear and panic, but with only one (very welcome) casualty.

Events still ongoing on Rutland Avenue too, unusual that the heavies turned up last night and have since left. Still no statement on things either which would suggest the operation is still very much in progress.

Fair play to the guy in the high-vis jacket, doesn’t break his stride when the bomb goes, straight over to the car to help the guy. Gotta be honest I’d probably be struggling to run the other way with my pants full of shit.

If it went off properly then it is nothing short of a miracle that the driver survived. I'm no explosives expert by any means, but it just seems impossible to me that the driver would be relatively unscathed from a device going off just a couple of feet behind him.
