What's your guilty pleasure?
« on: September 30, 2020, 06:57:16 am »
We've discussed songs we hate, but what about that song you secretly love but really, really don't want anyone to know?

Kicking off with Relight My Fire, the Take That classic, wouldn't play it at volume, a headphones only dance-along.

All those shit songs from my twenties? Yeah, they're okay now.
Except come on Eileen.

Guilty pleasures. Just songs or are we going wider than that?

I am a fan of Dina Carroll's Don't Be A Stranger, random I know but when it came out in 1993 I had just left school and was seeing a girl who lived in Ashton in Makerfield. This was miles from my house in Huyton and I wasn't really into pubs then, so that song reminds me of sitting off either in her room or sitting on the 320 bus which used to go from town to Wigan.

Mandy - Barry Manilow has a few good tunes to be fair but I love this track (nerd bit: the original was called Brandy)

Home - Westlife hate this band but this makes me think of, well, home - and my family too

Hero - Enrique Iglesias I should HATE everything about this song but secretly I LOVE IT!!! oh the shame I'm sorry pleeeease forgive me

Sugababes - Freak Like Me

Spent an afternoon stripping the wallpaper in my aunty's kitchen years ago and she had the single on CD that she had on repeat. The Viet Cong never came up with such effective torture.

ABBA - Chiquitita

Came here to say ABBA - Fernando, but the consensus seems to be that ABBA are just a pleasure.

The Boys of Summer - Don Henley...is that one?
Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves - Cher
Mama Weer All Crazee Now - Slade
Hall and Oates' Greatest Hits

Is liking prog (Supertramp, Genesis, Floyd etc.) considered guilty these days?
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

it's a good song!

I know it is, but ABBA is not in any way the type of music I'm into, I'm more likely to be found listening to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Suicidal Tendencies, Pantera, Slipknot, Slayer, Megadeth or Metallica. I'd certainly never play ABBA in the car..............

I have started to listen to Country Rock lately though, Katie Pruitt, Blackberry Smoke, Travis Denning and the like.

Definitely Downtown but disagree about Dusty and Carole being guilty pleasures - but 'May as well rain until September' is definitely guilty.

I'd add Shirley Bassey 'I who have nothing' to your 60s female artists.

Absolutely.  If it fills a floor in a nite club, then it shouldn't qualify as a guilty pleasure.   Keep on Movin' ain't no All Rise, though  ;)

I watched TOTP Australian Hits last week on BBC4, and there's a bunch of songs that veer between classic pop tunes (Torn) and guilty pleasure (You're the Voice).  I think it has to have a certain amount of fromage to qualify as a guilty pleasure, and a bagpipe solo in You're the Voice qualifies that. Torn is a classic pop song, whereas Holly Valance is just cheesy and thus a guilty pleasure. (Holly herself was certainly a guilty pleasure in her neighbours days).

The Carpenters, for example, have always been a 'guilty pleasure band', but Superstar is too good a song to be one. Anyone who listens to the Sonic Youth version can testify to that.

Does Wichita Lineman count as a guilty pleasure?
Absolutely not.  It's one of the greatest pop songs ever recorded.  'And I need you more than want you / And I want you for all time' is quite possible the greatest lyrics in modern music.
