That was a fucking film and a half. Absolutely spellbinding, the 2 hours passed in the blink of an eye!

Literally the first time I've ever enjoyed Star Trek. J. J. Abrams is a fucking genius.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but did anyone feel Abrams Star Wars'd Star Trek? I enjoyed the film fuckloads (am a newcomer to Star Trek myself) and it certainly seemed much faster paced than other tidbits I've seen of the Trek series here and there.

Absolutley BRILLIANT! Best film I've seen for ages!
I am a newcomer to Star Trek really, I've seen the orginal film, and that was ok, but JJ Abrams has really updated it. The special effects are amazing, but this took nothing away from the story and emotional bits :)
It had everything in it!

Spoiler
Loved  the bit were Bones kept injecting Kirk! Really funny ;D

Saw this today and it was a decent enough summer blockbuster.

It had some great special effects and the first 10 minutes were particularly spectacular. The Starfleet Academy bits were also quite enjoyable. It certainly looked very good in its visuals and looked quite fresh, compared to how horribly dull and unappealing the TV and Film versions previously looked. Also some of the banter between Spock and Kirk was good.

The problem was that none of the remaining action was as good as the first 10 minutes. The film didnt seem or end very epically, considering its a Space adventure movie. There wasnt many more highlights after the initial scene and the ending wasnt done very well.

The story itself was a bit all over the place as well. It was well confusing to follow, although thats probably because I am not a trekkie and lose any sense of understanding when time travelling and parallel universe elements come into play.

Also, I found the cast well strange. You had Chris Pine who I remember from his fantastic turn in 'The Princess Diaries 2'. Not sure he was good enough to be leading a major Hollywood blockbuster and made it look like a TV film, especially as nearly everyone on American TV shows can do the whole 'angry-young-rebel' routine.

You then had Sylar being, well, Sylar. I was expecting him at any moment to swish his fingers and cut off Kirk's head. You had Simon Pegg being Simon Pegg in a Scottish accent and the guy who made the term 'MILF' famous. They also managed to make Karl Urban turn from the fitty he was as Eomer in The Lord of the Rings and in The Bourne Supremacy into the least attractive version of himself ever.

All in all, a decent enough action film which people who initially detest Star Trek (like me) may enjoy. Although it seems that existing Trekkies love it so clearly a sequel will be made and for my interest, hopefully there is better and much more epic action in it.

Its all relative. Transformers was about toys fighting in a street in an American city somewhere.

Star Trek was set in the future and takes place in outer space. In that case, it should have been more epic and had more scenes like at the start, which was pretty impressive.

Given they were setting up the new cast and re-introducing the characters there was a traction on how much action they could have in it, and all things considered, given how this was an 'establishing' movie, they got the balance really well indeed, between re-introducing the crew, establishing the characters, and blending that with an adequate narrative, action, suspence etc etc

The next one won't have to worry about all the things this movie had to do.....they can just go for it Wrath of Khan style and take the foot off the pedal.

Yeah they have now the opportunity to ramp up the action considerably and I am sure that most non-trekkies will look for this to happen.

Went to see it at the Odeon in Liverpool One this afternoon, and it all began quite strange.  I've been used to just purchasing your ticket and making your way to the theatre, and sitting where you want.  Not at this gaff.  We were quietly sat for about 5 mins all on our own.  Suddenly, this usher waltzed in, and asked to see our tix.  Had to laugh.  Didn't realise it was protocol to wait in the foyer to be called in and properly ushered to yer seat.  Found it really strange that folk had to form an orderly queue in order for the usher to escort you to your seat.  I also had to giggle when a few people tried to make a break for it, and he'd chase after them.  Oh, how times have changed  ;D

On to the film.  Fucking loved it!  I've never been a trekkie, but thoroughly enjoyed the movie.  Great special effects, story line not too tacky, thought the casting was pretty good too.  The final scenes as Kirk appeared on the bridge as captain, said it all to me.  His whole body language was so William Shatner.  Mind you, I had to laugh at Kirk, he spent half the film getting beat up, oggling girls (which he was famous for), and hanging from dangerous ledges.  It must have been a world record for hanging from a dangerous ledge for one character.

Loved Spock too.

Can't wait for the next Trek movie myself.

Went to see this today!

As someone who's never really watched much of the original Star Trek, but loved Deep Space Nine (and tolerated Voyager and The NExt Generation), I absolutely LOVED it.

All the characters seemed to fit well, old Spock and young Spock comfortably stole the show - although Bones was equally good! Uhuru was fit!

Not too impressed with Nero as the bad guy, think they could've shown a lot more of him - I know he was sort of developed in a series of books before the film, but in the film it was just a bit "oh he's pissed off cos Romulus got destroyed in the future", it could've developed him a bit more. But aside from that minor gripe, such a good film!

Some great lines and moments aswell, e.g. "I would rather die than accept help from you", "Okay, Mr Sulu fire all we've got" - can't wait for number 2 (or is it number 12?)

Took the missus last night and she loved it and so did I, again!, surprised there were so many there to be honest a good 30 to 40 which ain't bad, anyways when were driving home I ask her did she get onto any of the old refernces, the redshirt death, the truth beetle etc she turns around and says "ye! wasn't it great that Spock got to kiss Uhura instead of Kirk, which how it was originally of meant to have been but Roddenberry changed the scene so Kirk did"  ??? ??? :o  :o i nearly crashed the car!!! I didn't know this!
I grilled her all night to find out how she new this, she eventualy broke and told me she'd watched that Justin Lee Collins show about saving Star Trek that was on a couple of weeks ago and remembered it from there, for a minute there I nearly went to defcon 5 and arranged the wedding there and then.

BTW the film is still class a second time around and the 2 hours still flies, get on it before it moves to DVD, ye can't beat a large screen.

Just saw this. Old Spock may have set the timeline right at the end so to speak, but the fact is there's no more Romulan or Vulcan home planet in this new timeline.

And the fact that Kirk had been brought up without a father makes it all slightly different, so it will be interesting. Add to the fact that Spock lost his mother, along with the majority of his people.

If done nicely it could make for some good sequels.

Ah yes silly me. And there's also the paradox that the supernova is bound to still happen. But Kirk knows the whole deal now.

And, can they still make the red matter? Because only the Vulcans had the technology to do so.

It kicks in and hits it's stride during season 3 mate - after that it is some quality tv from a time where there were too few decent shows around.

From Season 1 I'd give Emissary, Past Prologue, A Man Alone, The Storyteller, Duet, Battle Line, The Nagus, In the Hands of the Prophets a go - and Q-Less too if you're a fan of Q.

From Season 2 I'd give The Homecoming, The Circle, The Siege, Cardassians, Rules of Acquisition, Necessary Evil, The Alternate, Whispers, The Maquis, Part I, The Maquis, Part II, The Wire, The Collaborator, Tribunal, The Jem’Hadar all a go.

Form Season 3 start watching all of them mate - there's a few stinkers and 'meh' episodes along the way - but mainly it's quality and starts to have story arcs throughout...

(pretty much any early episode featuring O'Brien and Garak heavily are worth watching too :))

Discovery premiers in the UK on Netflix on Monday - be interesting to see whether it works...

Will certainly watch it and give it a chance (no matter how bad the first trailer looked).

One of the things I don't like about it is the whole look and feel - it's set 10 years before the original but looks like a different century/universe. Now obviously they can't just recreate the dodgy sets of the original, but they could have incorporated a lot of the style, rather than what's standard these days - metallic looking "futuristic" that's just the same as any other sci-fi show and really forgettable.

Looking at some youtube videos - Ricky from My so-called life is in it!!

Yeah the metalic and lens flare from the trailers does seem to give it a lot more in common with the JJ Abrahms universe than the original. I do think it's a shame the show didn't pick up 20 years or so on from Voyager and DS9, but willing to give this a go...
