Six wins in a row  :o

Game in hand (away at Oldham) over MK Dons who are in 3rd 5 points ahead plus they play them at Prenton Park in three weeks.

The travelling SWA enjoyed themselves yesterday  ;D

No love lost between those two, hate each other. Will be feisty games - home leg next Friday night, away leg the Monday night following, both 7.45 ko.

Incidentally, congrats to Sol Campbell keeping Macclesfield up yesterday. Bet CheshireMike is happy!  ;)

They're playing the first leg of the play-offs right now, Forest Green already had a fella sent off.  Perfect chance to smash a few home to take to their place.

Should have done a lot more with the man advantage, looks like there was an injury to Norwood at the end of the game too?

Mike Dean in the tranmere end standing on a barrier celebrating.  ;D

Hope they keep Norwood next season, he's the only reason they are in the playoffs. They will struggle to get a player as good as him in. Hes been terrific this season, Championship level performances.

They'll need to find fortunes to keep him I reckon. Championship clubs will be queuing up to take a chance on him. Promotion or not I doubt it'll be enough.

Well done to Tranmere. Fingers crossed for the final.

Palios runs the club very well.

On the subject of Norwood, he is out of contract at the end of the season and 27 years old. This is his last real chance at a big payday that can set him up for life. I cannot see him staying.

James Norwood hoping for more Wembley goals and a shot at the big time

Top league scorer bids to shine again in playoff final for Tranmere.

By Jonathan Northcroft

It was in the first half of his trial for Exeter that James Norwood realised professional football was more serious than he had thought. A substitute, he got the munchies. So he nipped to the food stand, returning with a hotdog and Diet Coke.

Paul Tisdale, Exeter’s manager, was astounded to see his would-be new striker refuelling on the bench. “League One footballer!” Tisdale screamed. “I said, ‘I’m hungry,’” Norwood recalls — he can smile about it now. “And that I always get a Diet Coke with a hotdog.

“For me it was nothing out of the ordinary. I was at Eastbourne Town in the Rymans (League), sometimes playing for the ressies (reserves) where people would turn up hung over. I didn’t understand what professionalism was. When you do a scholarship you learn the ins and outs of being a footballer, but I’d no idea.”

Norwood actually won a contract that day. In the end, Tisdale sent him on and his natural pace, strength and finishing quickly established his case. But, 18 and fresh from A-levels at St Bede’s private school, Norwood remained a naïf in the professional game.

He had always been entrepreneurial — delivering takeaway curries while a pupil, gaining the offer of a business and sports scholarship in Michigan — and was ambitious to take over his dad’s roofing firm. When he realised that training finished at 12 and he would have afternoons free, he applied for work with a pizza chain for extra cash.

That did not go down well and after playing Exeter’s first four games of 2009-10 he was discarded, beginning a series of loans that ended with a permanent move to then Conference Premier side Forest Green. He and Tisdale met this season and could laugh about those times. Norwood is different now: a savvy, seasoned pro, into gym work, ice baths, protein shakes. As English football’s top league scorer of 2018-19, with 29 goals — plenty of those high quality and none penalties — he has helped to shoot Tranmere to Saturday’s League Two playoff final against Newport. There is very serious interest from Ipswich. At 28 there is still scope for a non-League-to-big-time story; to be the next Jamie Vardy.

Norwood is a candid and quietly funny interviewee, in the sunshine on a hotel patio near his home in Huyton. If Tranmere triumph, he points out drily, he will just be back where he was 11 seasons ago: League One. That pace, strength, and finishing never left him — so why the circuitous journey? Others’ misjudgement played a part: he was an England schoolboy international but dumped by Crystal Palace because at 16 he was 5ft 2in. Then, for four years at Forest Green, he played out of position at left midfield because managers wanted pace on the flanks.

It took a while to get his food intake right. “My physique was incredible and I could outrun anyone so I’d eat whatever I liked and didn’t feel the need to change. Then you hit 23, 24 and start working a little harder, eating a little leaner and feel the benefits. You’re looking for that extra per cent and realise food’s going to make a big difference.

“But people don’t realise how hard it is for footballers down the levels to eat well. You’re on the road to away games stopping at service stations for your pre-match meal. The pay’s not great. First-year pro wages. I’m going, ‘Am I going to spend £5 on a chicken?’ I was on 60 quid a week after rent — you’ve less than nine pounds a day for everything including two meals. And a microwave dinner is £1.99!”

Being uninitiated meant he did not have an agent —he did not know any, and no one ever rang. So despite having captained England C and his 46 goals in three seasons from that midfield position he stayed tied to Forest Green on dead-end deals. “I did contract talks myself. I’d panic I wasn’t good enough, that’s the thing.

“When I played I was, in my head, the best player in the country. Yet as soon as the season finished, I’d panic, ‘what if no one else will sign me?’ and ended up taking year-after-year deals until I was 24. Cardiff were interested, Port Vale. I missed out on opportunities. Contract talks? I had no idea. I didn’t know about appearance fees, goal bonuses, none of that. I began to think, you know what, I’m just going to have to be that guy people say ‘he should’ve played higher’”

Andre Gray was his strike partner for England C and he rooted for his friend in the FA Cup final while hoping Sergio Aguero didn’t score. He and Aguero started the day level with 32 goals as top scorers in all competitions. He loves Tranmere, its people, the canny management of Micky Mellon — but after 92 goals in 188 games, including the one that returned the club to the Football League last season, he faces a dilemma. “I have an idea in my head where I can play,” he says. “There’s a great opportunity to get promoted with a club who are so good for me. But there’ll also be opportunities at other clubs who, if I do well there, might help get me where I want to go. After Wembley there’ll be a decision to make, the most difficult decision of my life.”

“I want to push to see how high I can go. But I’d back myself. Back myself to score goals in the Premier League.”

The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, and you've burned so very, very brightly, Jürgen.

Only heard it on the radio - clients I’m working for came out wondering what all the noise was about  ;D

Well done Micky and the boys, first honours for Merseyside this week!

The commentator on talksport did well to keep his emotions in check...it was Nigel Adderly. No secret he is a Rovers fans and he did a great job!

If people didn't know that, they mentioned it in the studio after the game finished!
