Sun Electric - one of the best.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/7ZnIPVZjOmg?version=3&amp;" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/7ZnIPVZjOmg?version=3&amp;</a>
Mate that is probably my fave album of all time!!! "Atom Of All Suns" from I think around 16 mins in - I played that once in the chillout zone of a work party at the CEO's house, summer 1996, as the sun was rising. Imagine a few dozen pill casualties all fucking zonked on the floor totally bonged out to that track. The fact that I managed to make most of them fall asleep to it was to me a compliment - although one guy was still so off his face that he was convinced that the sun was dancing with him. I love the way the beat builds in such a subtle manner on Atom. Oh and have you ever read the sleeve notes from the album? I believe it was performed in Copenhagen. Something about tape recorders and hippies with lawyers :lmao

Atom was a great choice to send them all off to the land of nod, I can just picture the scene!

Bit gutted my copy doesn't play anymore. Looking at replacing it, but it doesn't come cheap.

:D haha

Hey, could be on to something there...my ancient technics separates still have a double tape deck, although they haven't mangled, er I mean played a cassette in years.

I went all modern a few years back with new speakers for the laptop....but when we moved house the separates somehow resumed their rightful place as the provider of music (including sounds wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats)

A tape to tape copy, now that would be a novelty!

Incredible piece of music.
Was actually made on cassette in 1978! Later found and released in 81* I think.

Very nice! Kind of like some bits of Poland by Tangerine Dream. Lovely but a little too bouncy for my tastes when in a serious ambient/chill mode.

Speaking of tracks made in the 80s, get on this (apologies if already posted) - a classic from The Human League - no, not THAT line up! You can see from the cover that this is the line up that still included Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. Ah, halcyon days.....

I have 2 copies ;) Go to www.discogs.com - always my goto source for old vinyl :wave  - be warned though, the rest of the album is nowhere near as chilled - in fact, quite the opposite - industrial/avant-garde electro-pop in many places. But it does have the best version of Being Boiled on it too :thumbup

Currently working from home a lot so I get to play music very, very, very loudly all day and, having recently set up the 90s sound system, am enjoying going though my back catalogue.

This next offering is a bit trancey, but still really nice and trippy, so hopefully you won't mind it being in here. I have the whole album that this track features on - a sampler from Within Records - mainly featuring this band.

The whole albums has been well mixed together but some tracks stand alone just fine - like this one, which closes the album Okay, it doesn't but it should do, cos the last track is shit ;D :wave).

Enjoy!

Nice record deck mate, how much do RAWK Mods get paid?!

You mentioned Being Boiled earlier, I heard a version on an Andrew Weatherall mix he did a year or two back. I'll have a listen and see what version it is. It's a cracking mix as well, I'll post the link later.

Wow what the fuck happened to this thread?!?!?!? Some ace suggestions in here by some ace people, some of whom seem not to post any longer, which is a real shame....

So. firstly, nostalgia - I remember an amazing ambient night in Southport back in 1988 which featured, if I remember correctly, Fripp, Eno (Roger, not Brian) and Frugivores. At the time, my fave piece of ambience was a delicious work called Deep Breakfast by Ray Lynch - you can still hear it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyXvTmMEWtU

Next, mid-term nostalgia - how many of you are familiar with Carbon Based Lifeforms? They're friends of mine from when I lived in Sweden - best gigs I ever went to were theirs. The most popular album they released was 'Hydroponic Gardens" but they have also released some seriously hypnotic trippy shit, like Arecibo or Inertia off their album Twentythree, but also some stuff you can dance to, like Interloper.

Now, bang up to date, today I received an email from Bandcamp that CBL have released a new album, 'Derelicts' - of course, I bought it right away, blazed up and am happily spaced to fuck listening to it - a very mature piece, that tames the raw energy of earlier stuff and brings to adulthood the almost divine naivete of their drone style in a blend that just tickles the ears and reaches deep into the gut.

Check it out here - https://carbonbasedlifeforms.bandcamp.com/album/derelicts

And let's have some more contributions - a thread like this should never have died out in 2006 ffs!!!!!!!!!!  :o

Amazing, beautiful music which would be perfect for me to play while cycling along quiet country roads in Northumbria.

I'm only on track number 2, "Derelicts" but all ready I'm thinking this could be the start of a long, beautiful relationship.

Thanks Jim.

Some nice suggestions in here.

I love the sort of classical ambient like Einaudi, Glass and Eno. An absolute modern favourite has to be Max Richter though. His Blue Notebooks (2008) especially is a thing of beauty, it's inspiration is Franz Kafza's Blue Octavo Notebooks, which incidentally is one of my favourite authors too. Kafka stopped writing in his regular notebooks during a period in his life and resorted to smaller blue octavo-sized notebooks: his thoughts were more fragmented there but stranged more connected to the human condition. One of Richter's albums is Sleep (2015) which he himself calls an 8 hour lullaby. Indeed his concerts for this album were 8 hours long, start late at night and go on till the sun breaks. I read an interview once where he was encouraging people to sleep during these concerts.

Apart from the classical sounds, modern ambient like Tycho, Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm are spectacular at least that's what friends who heard them live said and that's how they look like on youtube.
"We gave the fans the pride. Again. We fight for the fans, we fight for the club and we fight for our players. Maybe he cannot understand this." ~ Rafa Benitez

An essential Eno related oldie:

Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno (1977)

I also love Cluster's Sowiesoso album from '76. Still sounds really fresh.

Nice one Jim :)

There’s another ambient music thread knocking around somewhere, but this must be the original looking at the date of it. There’s some stuff I’ve never heard of too, so will enjoy having a youtoob search!

Talking of stuff I’ve never heard of, there’s some ambient gems been posted in the ‘leftfield’ Thread by Capon over the last week. Enjoying working my way through them too.

Just found the other thread. https://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=252489.msg14601928

I've been smashing the hell out of Aphex Twin & Boards of Canada lately. Just getting into some Brian Eno now. I've listened to Popol Vuh previously. I feel like part of my youth was denied because I'd never heard of BoC until just recently. They obviously didn't get much air time here in Australia. Then again, I probably wasn't ready for such heavy music back then either. Amazing, thought provoking music.

I've properly rinsed Interloper and Twentythree, both absolutely cracking!

Always think of FSOL as a blend between dance, ambient and Pick Floyd. Always worth a listen, Amorphous Androgyny being the stand out album. Cool as fuck album cover design too!

:P my musical credentials are solid mate.

CBL split a few years ago from their original label (Ultimae from Lyon, I know the owners too - Mahiane and Aes Dana, both really cool musicians in their own right - lots of trance/psy but they also to ambient/drone, worth checking out the label and listening to some of their samples - www.ultimae.com - also features Solar Fields, Cell, Asura, James Murray and many more...) - anyway, the point is that CBL have re-released their original albums and the remastered versions are an absolute treat! It's all available on bandcamp - enjoy - https://carbonbasedlifeforms.bandcamp.com/

As for FSOL, I have the lot, including a double white copy vinyl EP limited to 500 copies - Slider/SnakeHips/You're Creeping Me Out/Herd Killing/Live in New York - sensible offers considered ;D

That cover of the Amorphous Androgynous album - it's The Isness, right? You heard the first one, Tales of Ephidrena? One of my fave ever ambient tracks is on there - Mountain Goat - used to be a staple offering on MTV's Chill Out Zone, excellent post-clubbing viewing Back In The Day.......

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch/v/7qkKh7o1Tzg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch/v/7qkKh7o1Tzg</a>
(not sure why the flash tags aren't working - here's the link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qkKh7o1Tzg)

Also, this is the cover for that 1993 album

OK, so I busted out the vinyl and cd's last night and recorded an ambient-ish live DJ mix.

A mixture of old plus some fairly recent tunes. Here's the tracklist for what I've called "Ambient Scouse For The RAWK Generation"

Susumu Yakoto – Thread Leads To Heaven
Wally Badarou - Keys
St Etienne – My Diane
Steve Jones and David Holmes – The Reiki Healer From County Down
Pink Floyd – Wine Glasses
Vangelis – Love Theme From Blade Runner
The KLF – Madrugada Eterna
Brain Machine – To The Stars
Seahawks – Sky Phase
Wilson Tanner – Keith
Sigur Ros – Fjögur Píanó
Brian Eno and Harold Budd – A Clearing
Harmonia – Kekse
The KLF – 3AM Eternal (The Orb Blue Danube Remix)
The KLF - 3AM Somewhere Out Of Beaumont
Ashra Tempel – Ocean of Tenderness
Cantoma – Claudio’s Theme

Enjoy!

Nice one, thank you for the comment. I'll deffo do another mix as I really enjoyed that. It's fun to dig out tracks that ordinarily wouldn't be classed as ambient as such. The St Etienne tune being a case in point. It's actually a cover of a Beach Boys song believe it or not. It's on a Brian Wilson tribute album, the first half of the song is the usual bouncy pop they are known for, then transfers into that moody instrumental piece.. Love it.
