I can see that happening Andy.

I can also see African footballer of the year El Hadji Diouf joining Salif to a) make him feel at home a bit more and b) provide Baros with the kind of competition for 3rd / 4th place striker that'll make him work hard to achieve.

Another little thing on the "passed up by clubs" thing;

Before going to Leeds, Eric Cantona was on trial at Sheffield Wednesday - they declined to sign him, thinking that Graham Hyde looked a better prospect (:p)

As much of a tit and a Manc that Cantona was, he is almost certainly one of their best players of all time!

Dont read to much into players being rejected by clubs!!

According to Souness he turned Cantona down when manager of us.

We also apparently turned down Freddie Ljunberg , but i think it was due to a lack of funds or something at the start of GH's reign

Diao sounds like a back up for Hamann when he is suspended or injured.A few times last year we struggled when we never had Hamann, only a few times though. In Ged I Trust.

Gerard Houllier has comfirmed that £5M signing Salif Diao will join The Reds next week.

"I have looked at the big picture and realised we need Salif now.  All the top sides have strength in the centre of midfield." He said.  Diao will join Dietmar Hamann, Stevie Gerrard, Igor Biscan, Danny Murphy and Bruno Cheyrou in competition for the two centre midfielder roles.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Damien Duff according to the Sunday People.  It is reported that Blackburn want £20M for the Irishman, whereas Houllier is only prepared to go to £15M.  As is common with any player availible for transfer, Man United are linked.

He was coming nethertheless but still it does confirm more or less the strength GH will have at his disposal this season. Someone who can play the role Hamann does, apparently, but possesses quite a fair amount of flair will be a good addition. Like Diouf it will be interesting to see how he fares in the English game.

So should the club book him in now for a disciplinary hearing with the FA.

Might as well show willing and ensure the rooms available in advance.

From what I see at the World Cup I think he has the every potential to be the new Vieira -- scoring at 1st minute and then get sent off at the 2nd. ;D

i think are success this season depends largely on how effectively GH is able to replace Stevie when and if he is out with niggling injuries (let's hope not at all).

when SG is firing on all cylinders we look a different proposition. the kind of energy and thrust he shows sets the tone for the rest of the team. when he's not there we look limp and without ideas. hopefully diao can prove to be a quality understudy. adding dynamism to the centre of our midfield.

Dare I say it but I think Gerrard's importance to the team can be compared to a certain Keane in you-who-which-team.

I think without Gerrard we would be a different team and it would be impossible to replace him (finger crossed) -- so I think the general idea is to have other midfielders to step up more this season and help out Stevie, not just expecting his understudy can deliver anything close to him.

Does anyone feel we benefited from not having him in the team today? I'm not having a go at him as a player, just that maybe when he plays, he holds back the midfield a bit too much.

I think we benefited from having Murphy and Gerrard in teh center of Midfield.  So mayb a yes to your question.  but he has been excellent in a few games this season for us has Diao.

Glad Diao joined us at the beginning of the season and not put on loan as was planned. When Gerrard went through his sticky patch a few months back, Diao had some good games.

I also reckon Murphys best position is in centre of midfield

Think we played a different system today than we do usually.
We played four midfielders - all with the freedom to attack, rather than three midfielders and one as a spare central defender (Hamann/ Diao role)
Was great to watch and I never felt we would lose today even though it was 1- 0, different to villa, blackburn, sheffield etc etc.
I'm not saying drop hamann or diao - just not constrain them to being a defensive midfielder

anyway - too pissed to be coherent - so if I've spouted drivel I apologise

Salif Diao got an 8 as a mark in the Times resently after he had played right back  v.Everton.
I suppose he must have been very successful.
Why not give him more chances in this position?
I think that should give Liverpool more offensive options!

If we are gonna do that, we may as well buy an attacking right back. No point playing people out of position when we dont need to.

I remember being impressed with Salif as a right (wing) back away at Birmingham and thought it was a good option when chasing a game like that. Something happened shortly after that which knocked it out of my head (can't remember what it was offhand now  :P). He has the attributes required in that he's quick, strong, can tackle and get forward and knock a cross in. It seems he did well there in the derby and its not a bad option. This would allow Carra to move to centre half, where I think he is much better and much more suited.

Does he play right wing back for Senegal? Can't remember.

If he goes there, Carra could be tried out on the left again.  Still think Riise is poor at stopping the crosses when he plays at left back

PSG Want Salif Diao
« Reply #70 on: July 19, 2003, 11:10:45 am »
Just been reported on Sky Sports News that Paris St Germain want to sign Salif Diao.

Say they are "interested as he won't play many games for Liverpool".

Personally i think it would be good business to let him go. He isn't going to be a first team regular because simply, he isn't good enough. At times last season he looked good, but more often than not he looked average. He would be a decent player to have as back up, but if a sensible offer came in i think we'd have to consider it.

Not sure if he'd want to go back to France already though, but can't see him making it with us.

I dont think we should sell him. He settled in quite well and has the attributes to suceed in the PL IMO. He did look a little lost at times, but then he was asked to play center back and even right back at Palace...

I think we will/should hold on to him also.
He could turn out to be a very useful back up player / sub, plus he reminds me of rigobert song the way he launches himself into tackles...

He isn't going to be a first team regular because simply, he isn't good enough.

Like with anyone, given a good run in a good position, Diao will shine.

His movement on and off the ball is superb. He has wonderful balance and vision. This is why PSG want him as a replacement for Ronaldhino.

I think we've got a wonderful midfielder giving support and cover for Hamman. Plus, if he is as good in training and the flashes he showed last season, he will be keeping Didi well on his toes.

Nah I'd deffo give him another season at least. If he plays well enough he can take Didi's place IMO. He's a lot more athletic than Didi IMO.
