I think you're right Jamie - he hasn't been played in his right position, which is a complaint a lot of our players could have.
But, if he wasn't going to be played as Didi's back-up, he shouldn't have been bought, so he was a bad buy.

I can't fathom Geds reasons for buying him.

Theres something dodgy about that interview. Leaves me wondering if he's been mis-interpreted? Wouldn't be the first time it happened in football.

Cant find anything on L'Equipe.

Does Diao speak English? Or has it been translated?

Always difficult to understand foreigners giving interviews.

Have always thought he has been the bait for Diouf.

Never good enough, a below average player who we waste wages on, would have rather seen the emergence of Welsh rather than the singing of Diao

Has anyone watched him in the ACON? Hows he been?

I've seen two games he's been involved in and he's played well. This though could be a result of two things:

1. He has been playing in his preferred position, or

2. He has looked good because the quality of the African Nations has been terrible.

Daio does speak English fairly well, and it wouldn't surprise me that he has been getting frustrated with lack of opportunities in midfield. I was very impressed with his performance against Arsenal earlier on in the season when he played behind Stevie G, but if I'm honest I'd have to say that he does not look to have enough quality about him to challenge Didi for his preferred position.
If you keep one eye on the past, you are blind in one eye. Yet if you forget the past, you are blind in both.

Hardly worth reading that.  What Diao is quoted as saying is useless, the rest is guess work by a journalist who is putting his own points into the interview.

But then again, that's what you get if you read anything from Sky.

Was great today. Strong an broke a load of Mali tackles up. Deffo would start IMO if Didi wasnt fit enough.

He's never had a steady run. But when he was picked he was awful. Birmingham away last season was a low point.

Where did he play that day?

Ya cant expect him to be out for a few weeks an perform well when straight back in the team.

Thought he had a good run at the start of last season an played well, like the performance at Leeds.

But to play that Didi role ya dont need as much on the ball ability as ya need ability in the head to get in the right positions to break up attacks like.

Diao: I'm committed to Liverpool
« Reply #176 on: February 6, 2004, 02:22:08 pm »
Liverpool's Senegalese midfielder Salif Diao has poured cold water on stories claiming that he was ready to leave Anfield if he couldn't win a place in the side. Diao is currently in Tunisia competing in the African Nations Cup and he updated his personal 'Icons' website to reassure Liverpool fans that he's still dedicated to making a success of his time at Anfield.

Diao said: "I have heard that stories were circulating in England earlier in the week that questioned my commitment to Liverpool, but I can categorically state that nothing could be further from the truth. I love playing for the club, the fans and I'm settled in the area. It's true that I'm disappointed not to have played more often but injuries have not helped my cause, so I understand why I haven't featured as often as I would have liked.

"That's why the African Cup of Nations has been so important, not just to my international career but to Liverpool as well. I've been training regularly, playing in all our games and I feel fitter than I have done in a long time.

"When I return I'll be match fit and ready to go for Liverpool and then hopefully the fans will get to see the real Salif Diao. I know I have a lot to offer my club and I know I have the ability to play in the Premiership - it's just a case of getting a run in the team, but I don't think I'll have a better opportunity than now. I'm feeling really good at the moment.

"If my situation still hasn't changed by the summer then obviously both parties will need to re-assess the situation. But I'm hoping it won't come to that because I want to prove myself with Liverpool."

What a suprise it was more fuckin media bollocks  :butt

The Salif from the start of last season is a great addition to our squad an hopefully thats what he will get when he gets back.

yes quite simply - I think he's a journey man. He hasn't brought anything special to the table and I questioned him signing at the time. £5m for a bench warmer. We would be better served giving Welsh more of a chance now.

He was fit for long periods last season and didn't play, that says to me the staff don't rate him, when I've seen him I think he is a red card waiting to happen. He cost a lot of money, he is paid a lot of money and I just don't think he is very good. He hasn't even shown glimpses like Bruno and El-Hadj had. I'd of prefered £4-5m in the bank all his wages back and John Welsh playing instead.

And he ain't no centre half or right back either.

Personally i would rather have the emergence of Welsh than see Diao sitting on the bench soaking up the money. Waste of money i say, hasn't achieved anything hasn't proved his value and hasn't deserved a regular place in the team

Who says that Welsh is going to "emerge" from anywhere? From what I've seen in the reserves he's been no great shakes, whereas when Diao has played for the reserves he has controlled the midfield... The lad is showing his 100% committment to the club, surely that should be appreciated, not with responses of "Hope we get rid of him"... If the young players are good enough they will get their chance, sadly, a lot of them aren't good enough.

I don't believe this. Are you to say that the only two players in the last five years worth anything in the youth team are our two best players? Players who would command fees of £15m+ in todays transfer market. I believe there have been and are players who could cut it at PL level but aren't given a chance. People point to Stephen Wright, but he is playing for a shit club with shit players round him. He could have done a job for us in the recent injury crisis just as Semmy did. I'd rather Welsh than Salif anyday - he'd appreciate the responsibility of playing for Liverpool

Well that opinion is totally at odds with everyone I know who regularly watches the reserves, including this site's reporter Andy of Liverweb.

So glad my first post on this great site is about Salif Diao  ;D

Essentially, I agree that he was a waste of money, and him committing himself to the club does nothing for me at all.  With Cheyrou and Diouf, my feeling has always been that they had more in the locker than perhaps was on show.  With Diao, sadly, I get the feeling we have seen what he can do.

Its a shame really, because he could be a more mobile version of didi - but i don't think he has the talent.

My main preoblem with Diao is alotr of the time he just doesn't look interested, he has stevie tackling everyone besides him and he kinda looks bemused by why stevies bothering, have to say id prefer welsh in, not because of anything other than he's a local lad who would give alot more than diao, which would compensate for any extra skill Diao has (although I personally feel, from the few bits i've seen of Welsh, he's a much better player than Diao, but that is highlights only so its a very vague opinion)

If we'd have signed Diao for say, £1m, it would be a decent buy. But we didn't.

Whilst he can do a good job, and did do when Stevie was struggling in late 2002, he's not a £5m player and he's not been making the 16 for a few months before he went to Africa, so there's no real point having him.

But he's not shit. He can play, he came in against Arsenal this year and looked the part, but might aswell let Welsh take up his position in the squad.

I think he's done quite well when played in the centre (playing him in defence is asking for trouble). Thought he did well vs Arsenal earlier in the season when he allowed Gerrard to roam.

The £5m price tag hasn't helped though.

exactly

we'd be better off in the long run and at least Welsh could say he's given it it best shot if he fails

Exactly mate.

I dont think the Bruno situation has taught us anythin though has it?

It should have taught us that unless a player has a decent run of games in his natural position he wont show his true talent. Whats the longest run Salif has had in the side playin in the central midfield?

I dont think 5mill for a back up is bad money. He is a good back up for Didi. The ball winner an break up player we dont really have apart from Didi an Stevie G.

The point is though Ian, is he ever likely to get a run in the side?

He didn't when Hamann was out, he didn't when Gerrard was out.

He can do a good job, but if he's not going to get the games why not sell him and let a youngster come in and take his place?

Am sure he was out when Stevie G was out though  ???

Also Ged went with Vladi, Dioufy an Kewell as attackin midfielders when Didi was out instead of keepin Stevie as an attackin one.
