Roma watch
« on: April 14, 2018, 07:59:26 am »
I thought a thread to discuss our semi final opponents could be useful. Current form, injuries etc. They are in a battle to qualify for next seasons champions league and have a very important derby this weekend against Lazio who are level on points with them. How will that affect our two games against them if at all ? Discuss.

Inter playing Atalanta before so Roma could drop to 5th before the Lazio game.  Let's hope for an Inter win to put the pressure on Roma for that game. Also, lets hope for a Lazio win to keep them in 5th.

Hoping for an Inter win, keep that pressure on.

Also, it is nice to know Roma play 3 times before we play them; and we play twice.

One interesting thing to watch will be who starts these games out of De Rossi and Gonalons. De Rossi generally seems to be first choice and therefore starts the bigger games, but because of his age (34) he's rotated with Gonalons, although it has happened far less in recent months because of injury.

De Rossi is an excellent player but he surely won't have the legs to cope with our attacking play and pressing at his age, will be interesting to see if they use these games to get Gonalons back up to speed to start against us - so far since returning from injury he has completed 90 mins twice, made two appearances from the bench, remained on the bench three times, and missed out on one matchday squad.

What's interesting is that Roma play midweek, weekend, midweek, weekend for a few weeks, so won't get a break at all.
They also are in joint 3rd, one point above 5th. So they can't rest on the laurels.

Inter drew unfortunately and missed their chance to go 3rd which would have dropped Roma to 5th. Lazio, Roma and Inter all level on 60 points with Lazio and Roma to play eachother tomorrow.

So far Roma play like Peter Reid's Sunderland with Niall Quinn.

Long ball to their big tall striker at every opportunity by passing the midfield.

Roma remind me of Utd. Very rigid shape, good positioning in defense, good tackling, and rely a lot on winning second balls to progress into the final third.

Sticking to a back three, which is excellent news. Klopp's Liverpool are ridiculously good against back threes.

That high line by Roma would be absolutely suicidal against us. Immobile has already wasted three golden chances by being careless in timing his runs.

Play that and Mo, Sadio and AOC could really exploit it. Late run and TAA spin a cros field ball into the space....you can just imagine it.

Surprised at how deep Dzeko drops in order to win the ball back which leaves them a little toothless up top. Seems like Roma rely a lot on their full backs getting forward, the quick long ball to Dzeko and their physicality in the middle. They look solid but they also look like a side who would struggle to break down a side when they aren't at their best. I guess their poor domestic home form reflects that.

They didn't beat Atlético, they just finished above them.
I actually think Atlético beat them in the head to head as well.
